Pediatric eye diseases are mostly caused by indulging in sweet and sour foods, leading to the generation of pathogenic heat within the zang organs. This heat steams and scorches the Liver meridian, rushing upward to manifest in the eyes. Symptoms may include redness, swelling, itching, and pain; excessive discharge (Machi) and tearing with a gritty sensation; growth of red blood vessels; or formation of nebulae (Yi). Additionally, phlegm-fluids and toxic vapors may soak into the Liver, preventing the free flow of organ qi. Consequently, the essence and spirit fail to illuminate clearly. Although the cornea (Heijing) remains intact, vision is blurred, a condition termed "Jing Mang" (Blindness of the Eye Globe). If vision is normal during the day but fails at night, this is due to pathogenic factors interfering with the Yin aspect of the meridians. This condition is regulated as "Que Mu" (Sparrow Eye), named because, like a sparrow's eyes, one cannot see in the dark. Another condition involves visual obstruction where Qi-toxicity shrouds the eyeball. Furthermore, Qi from Gan accumulation (Gan Ji) rushing to the eyes can also generate nebulae, causing obstruction.
