(To promote lactation, with a section on breast inflammation caused by infant sucking)
*Qianjin Fang* (Prescriptions Worth a Thousand Gold) discusses: The blood and qi of the wet nurse are transformed into breast milk. The manifestation of the five emotions (joy, anger, worry, thought, fear) as good or evil is entirely generated by blood and qi. Those who nurse infants should be cautious in their joy and anger. There are many criteria for the suitable physical appearance of a wet nurse; perfection cannot be demanded. One need only select those who do not suffer from fox odor, goiter (neck masses), qi cough (asthmatic cough), scabies, chi long (skin ulcers or difficulty urinating), white alopecia (scalp hair loss with scales), ulcers, thick lips, deafness, nasal discharge (nasal sinusitis), epilepsy, and other such diseases. Such individuals can be used to feed the infant. A physician seeing old moxibustion scars on a person can know the source of their previous illness.

*Zhangshi Jiachuan* Huangjin San (Golden Powder) treats all breast diseases in women. In middle-aged women, it is caused by deficiency of stomach qi and decline of blood. In young women, it is often due to improper rest after childbirth, emotional fluctuations (joy/anger), or food factors. Or it may be caused by the infant biting/sucking during nursing, leading to constant pain and itching. If not broken, it is called Yong (carbuncle); if broken, it is called Lou (fistula). This is certainly not a minor illness. If wrong medicines are used, it becomes a major disaster; thus, a prescription to treat it urgently is needed.
Take Chenjupi (Citri Reticulatae Pericarpium aged) in any amount, soak in hot water, wash and pick clean. Select the yellow part, grind slowly on a new tile to remove the white pith until thin, then wash cleanly with water, drain, and cut finely. Mix with wheat bran, stir-fry in a ding (cooking vessel). Use alternating mild and strong fire until fragrant and yellow. Spread on the ground to dissipate fire toxicity, sieve off the bran, grind into fine powder. Add a little good Shexiang (Moschus), wrap in thin paper, and place against a man's chest for one shichen (two hours), preferably a virgin boy. Take two to three qian each time, mixed with wuhui jiu (wine without alkali). Lie on the side of the affected area, sleep for a long time, then take another dose. When dryness, itching, and hives appear and disperse/break, even for severe cases, three doses will suffice.
