According to the *Shenghui Fang* (Prescriptions from the Holy Healer): Whenever a child suffers from "Wugu" malnutrition (a type of pediatric malnutrition characterized by wasting and specific nodules), symptoms include a dry head with standing hair, lack of moisture in the body, exposed cranial bones, heat in the brain, abdominal distension, itching in the nose, a craving for fermented sauces and meat, frequent thirst and drinking water, which often leads to dysentery. The dysenteric stool resembles rice washings; the back feels cold while the abdomen is hot; there are masses in the abdomen; and gradually, the complexion becomes sallow and the body emaciated. Some cases may be attributed to evil spirits or ghosts, belonging to the category of "Shanpi" (flash-like parasites). Small nodules, about the size of an apricot kernel, form within the muscles and skin on both sides behind the neck. If not removed for a long time, they flow into the abdomen, resulting in the aforementioned conditions. It is necessary to cauterize to break open the nodules; or to moxibustion the nodules; or to cut the skin and extract the nodules, which is slightly superior to moxibustion. However, since the disease is deep-seated and children cannot endure the pain, disturbing the meridians may often transform the condition into epilepsy (Xianji). After careful consideration, the most excellent method is cauterization. There is no other method for cauterization; one must observe the child's condition, and if similar nodules are present, quickly apply this cauterization method.
Specifically, use a sharp iron needle, heat the tip until it glows red-hot. Based on the size of the nodule, make a paper ring to secure the "Wugu" area, holding it firmly with fingers. Cauterize the center with the heated needle to a depth of approximately two bean widths, then apply Chenxiang Gao (Agarwood Ointment). (The prescription follows below.)
*Shenghui Fang* Prescription for refining Agarwood Ointment for application after needling/cauterizing Wugu nodules:
Chenxiang (Agarwood) (1 liang, sliced) Huangdan (Lead Monoxide) (6 liang)
Take 1 sheng of pure sesame oil, first decoct the Agarwood. When the Agarwood turns scorched black, strain it out. Add the Lead Monoxide and stir constantly, decocting over slow fire. When a drop placed on paper resembles black tin without oily residue and forms threads when pulled, the ointment is ready. For application, spread the ointment thinly on old cloth using a spatula and apply. Change once daily. It is best to avoid wind blowing directly onto the treated site.
*Shenghui Fang* Prescription for Fushen San (Poria Spirit Powder) to calm fright after needling/cauterization:
Fushen (Poria with Hostwood) Chuan Shengma (Cimicifugae Rhizoma) Xijiao (Rhinocerotis Cornu) [sliced] (each 0.5 liang) Daizhe (Haematitum) (finely ground) Chuan Dahuang (Rhei Radix et Rhizoma) [sliced, lightly fried] Gouteng (Uncariae Ramulus cum Uncis) (each 1 fen)
Grind the above ingredients into a coarse powder. Take 1 qian per dose, decoct with 1 small cup of water until reduced to 0.4 cups. Strain and remove dregs. Let cool to warm temperature and administer slowly.
*Shenghui Fang* Prescription for Xijiao San (Rhinoceros Horn Powder) to reduce swelling, promote qi circulation, and calm fright after needling/cauterization:
Xijiao (Rhinocerotis Cornu) [sliced] Hupo (Amber) Lushen (Aloe) (each finely ground) Helile Pi (Terminalia Chebula Pericarpium) (above each 0.5 liang) Longchi (Dinosaur Bone) (3 fen, finely ground) Huanglian (Coptidis Rhizoma) [deveined] Shexiang (Moschus) (finely ground) Binglang (Arecae Semen) Ganjiang (Zingiberis Rhizoma) [roasted, sliced] (each 1 fen)
Grind the above ingredients into a fine powder. Take 0.5 qian per dose mixed with rice water, three times daily. Adjust dosage according to the child's age and size.
*Shenghui Fang* Prescription for Qingjin Dan (Blue Golden Pill) after needling/cauterization:
Badou (Crotonis Fructus) [dehulled and deseeded] Liuhuang (Sulfur) (each 1 liang) Kulgen Pi (Meliae Cortex) Cu Shiliugen Pi (Granati Cortex) [sliced] (each 2 liang)
Place the above ingredients in an iron cauldron and boil in sufficient water for seven days and nights. If the water evaporates, add hot water as needed. After the time is up, remove the Meliae Cortex and Granati Cortex. Grind the Badou and Sulfur together. Add Guixin (Cinnamomi Cortex), Binglang (Arecae Semen), Muxiang (Aucklandiae Radix), and Xixin (Asari Radix et Rhizoma) powders (each 1 fen), Mayaxiao (Natrii Sulfas), Juapi (Citri Reticulatae Pericarpium), Ganjiang (Zingiberis Rhizoma), and Lanhuamo (Indigo Naturalis) powders (each 0.5 fen). Grind uniformly and mix with rice paste to form pills the size of hemp seeds. Take two pills orally with warm water on an empty stomach daily. Efficacy is indicated by loose stools. Children under three years old take one pill daily.
*Shenghui Fang* Another Prescription:
Use Banliang (0.5 liang) of Qingdai (Indigo Naturalis), finely ground into powder. Each dose takes 0.5 qian mixed with water and ground Xijiao (Rhinocerotis Cornu). Administer once on an empty stomach and once in the afternoon. Adjust dosage according to the child's size.
*Mengtong Baojian* Moxibustion Method: For children suffering from Wugu Dingxi (a severe form of Wugu malnutrition with sunken chest), moxibustion Meichong (BL3) (located 1 cun above the hairline, directly above the pupil), and Yuzhen (GB9) (on the high bone at the vertex). Three moxa cones per acupoint.
