According to *Chao Shi Bing Yuan* (Source of Diseases by Master Chao) regarding the syndrome of night sweats in children: Night sweats refer to sweating during sleep. The yin and yang qi of children are tender and weak, and their cou li (skin texture and pores) easily open. If they are kept too warm during upbringing, leading to an interaction of yin and yang qi during sleep, body fluids are discharged, resulting in sweating.
*Yang Sheng Bi Yong* states: For unmarried males and females, or children who are emaciated and sweaty, simply using mild herbs that nourish qi and blood and provide warmth will ensure safety without worry. (Herbs such as Atractylodis Rhizoma [Baizhu], Cinnamomi Ramulus [Guizhi], Rehmanniae Radix [Dihuang], Angelicae Sinensis Radix [Danggui], and Ligustici Chuanxiong Rhizoma [Xiongon] may be used.)
Qian Yi discussed night sweats, stating that spontaneous sweating during sleep is due to muscle deficiency; the primary formula is Zhi Han San (Stop Sweat Powder) (see the section on "Joyful Sweating"). If sweating covers the entire body, Xiang Gua Wan (Melon Pill) is the primary formula (see this section). If sweating occurs due to stomach weakness, extending from the neck down to the navel, this indicates stomach deficiency; the stomach should be tonified, and Yi Huang San (Benefit Yellow Powder) is the primary formula (see the section on "Stomach Qi Disharmony").
Qian Yi discussed that diseases have different levels/severity: The Zhang family had three sons who were ill. The eldest son sweated all over his body; the second son's sweat extended from the neck down to the chest; the youngest son only sweated on his forehead. Many physicians treated them with Mai Jian San (Wheat Decoction Powder) without effect. Qian Yi said: Give Xiang Gua Wan to the eldest, and Yi Huang San to the second. (Both formulas are mentioned above.) Give Shi Gao Tang (Gypsum Decoction) to the youngest. (Qian Yi's other formulas are similar to Zhu Ye Shi Gao Tang [Bamboo Leaf and Gypsum Decoction].) All recovered after five days of treatment. (Sweating all over the body is night sweats; sweating from the neck to the chest is stomach deficiency; sweating on the forehead is joyful sweating.)
*Wu Guan Guan Zhen Zhu Nang* discusses the syndrome of night sweats in children: Yin and yang qi are weak, cou li easily opens, and due to sleep, yin and yang qi interact, causing body fluids to discharge, thus forming deficiency sweating.
*Ying Tong Bao Jian* states: When children have heat in the heart and diaphragm, frequent dysentery, and night sweats, it is mostly due to Gan accumulation disease (malnutrition syndrome).
Song from *Ying Tong Bao Jian* on Night Sweats:
Children's qi and blood are not yet harmonized; cou li opens and relaxes, making them susceptible to pathogens. Over-warming during upbringing causes night sweats; seek medical principles early, do not delay.
Song from *Yu Jue* on Deficiency Heat Night Sweats in Children:
Frequent night sweats damage qi; deficiency heat in organs leads to yellow urine. Fever at night has no fixed time; cheeks are red, lips are dry, and there are sores in the mouth.
For this condition, first reduce fever, then regulate qi, and subsequently harmonize the zang-fu organs, thus avoiding errors.
Song from *Xiao Er Xing Zheng Lun* (Forty-Eight Syndromes) on Night Sweats:
Frequent night sweats occur; deficiency heat leads to yellow urine. Restless heat during night sleep; grinding teeth indicates kidney injury. Breathing is coarse or fine; details must be examined within the liver.
This disease is caused by qi injury, not wind-accumulated heat, but rather the San Jiao (Triple Burner) failing to flow smoothly. Prolonged sweating may fearfully develop into convulsive disorders. First use Nan Xing Wan (Arisaema Pill) to unblock the San Jiao (see "Cold Damage Turning into Rash" section), then administer Da Qing Dan (Great Cyan Pill) (see "Acute and Chronic Convulsions" section). If the heart qi becomes calm and free from fright, but sweating does not stop, first take Fang Feng Tang (Saposhnikovia Decoction) one or two doses to tonify qi and stop sweat (see this section).
