*Chao Shi Bing Yuan* (Source of Diseases by Chao Yuanfang) on the syndrome of pediatric Ma Bi (Horse Bi): Ma Bi is similar to Hou Bi (Throat Bi). It is also caused by wind-heat toxic qi lodging between the throat, mandible, and cheeks, clashing with blood and qi, leading to accumulation, swelling, and pain. The manifestation involves swelling from below the mandible extending to the cheeks, corresponding to pain, swelling, and blockage inside the throat, preventing the intake of water or fluids. In severe cases, pus may form and ulcerate. If the toxin attacks the heart, it causes mental restlessness and oppression, potentially leading to death.
*Qian Jin Fang* (Essential Prescriptions Worth a Thousand Gold) records: Whenever Hou Bi is deep and swollen, extending to the cheeks, accompanied by rapid breathing, it is named Ma Hou Bi (Horse Throat Bi). The prescription for treating this condition is as follows.
Take one horse bit (Ma Xian), add two sheng of water, boil until one sheng remains, and divide into three doses for oral administration.
Another prescription in *Qian Jin Fang*:
Take a handful of Rhizoma Patriniae (Mabiancao), avoid exposure to wind, cut off both ends, crush to extract juice, and administer orally.

Take one cun-bi of ash from burned Radix Iridis Tectorii (Malin), burn mulberry branches, squeeze out the juice, mix, and administer orally.
Taiyi Ju Jiedu Xionghuang Wan (Imperial Medical Bureau Detoxifying Realgar Pill): Has detoxifying effects; treats Chan Hou Feng (Coiling Throat Wind) and Ji Hou Bi (Acute Throat Bi), sudden collapse, aphonia, or trismus with loss of consciousness.
Xionghuang (Realgar, washed/ground) and Yujin (Radix Curcumae Longae) (each 1 qian); Badou (Fructus Crotonis Tiglii, peeled, oil removed, 27 seeds).
Grind the above into powder, cook with vinegar, and bind with wheat paste to make pills the size of mung beans. Administer seven pills with warm clear tea. Vomiting out stubborn phlegm will lead to immediate recovery. If vomiting does not occur, administer again. This formula is effective for Chan Hou Feng and Zouma Hou Bi (Running Horse Throat Closure), sudden collapse resembling death, aphonia, trismus, and unconsciousness. In cases of apparent death where warmth remains at the heart region and oral administration is difficult, use a knife handle, ruler, or iron spoon to pry open the mouth and instill the medicine. Once the medicine enters the throat, survival is assured; slight vomiting or diarrhea is acceptable. It is also suitable for upper jiao heat congestion, difficult phlegm discharge, sore throat and swelling, red eyes, carbuncles, and all toxic heat conditions. For children suffering from red and swollen throat, fright-heat, and phlegm congestion, administer two or three pills, adjusting dosage according to age and size.
