According to *Chao Shi Bing Yuan* (Source of Diseases by Chao Yuanfang) regarding the syndrome of wind-toothache and caries in children: The meridians of Hand-Yangming and Foot-Taiyang both enter the teeth. When wind pathogen invades these meridians and contends with blood and qi, the teeth become swollen and painful, and thick pus exudes; this is termed "wind caries" (Feng Qu).
*Qian Jin Yi Fang* (Supplement to the Thousand Golden Formulas) provides a formula for treating dental caries.
Finely chop the suspended hooves of a white horse, and insert them into the carious cavity. This should not be done more than three times. (*Sheng Hui Fang* uses *Ye Yan Cao*).
*Sheng Hui Fang* provides the *Xia Ma San* (Toad Powder) for treating wind-toothache and caries in children, accompanied by slight swelling of the head:
Dried Toad (one piece, burnt to ash), Qing Dai (Indigo Naturalis, finely ground), Tangerine Peel, Xi Xin (Asarum), White Chicken Manure, Xun Huang (Realgar, prepared), She Xiang (Musk, finely ground), Gan Jiang (Dried Ginger, processed and chopped). Each of the above ingredients is one fen; Gan Jiang is half a fen.
Pulverize the aforementioned herbs, sift through a fine sieve to make a powder, and mix thoroughly. Wrap a small amount in thin cotton, insert it into the carious cavity, and replace it once daily.
Another formula from *Sheng Hui Fang*:
Bai Fu Zi (Typhonii Rhizoma), Gao Ben (Ligustici Rhizoma et Radix), Xi Xin (Asari Radix et Rhizoma), Xiong Qiong (Ligustici Chuanxiong Rhizoma), Mang Cao (Herba Siegesbeckiae). Each of the above ingredients is one fen.
Pulverize the aforementioned herbs, sift through a fine sieve to make a powder. Wrap a small amount in thin cotton and apply it to the carious tooth.
*Sheng Hui Fang* provides a formula for treating wind caries with toothache, pain caused by worm erosion, and black decay of teeth:
Qing Dai (Indigo Naturalis, finely ground), Ji Fen Bai (White part of Chicken Manure, burnt to ash), Gao Ben (Ligustici Rhizoma et Radix), Xi Xin (Asari Radix et Rhizoma), Xiong Huang (Realgar, finely ground). Each of the above ingredients is one fen; She Xiang (Muscum) is a small amount, finely ground.
Pulverize the aforementioned herbs, sift through a fine sieve, and mix thoroughly. Take a small amount as needed and apply it to the teeth.
Another formula from *Sheng Hui Fang*:
Take five liang of the white bark of Yu Li Gen (Pruni Armeniacae Radix Cortex), chop it finely, decoct it in one and a half da zhen of water until one da zhen remains. Hold the liquid in the mouth while hot, and spit it out when cool. This should expel worms.
Another formula from *Sheng Hui Fang*:
Take Zao Jiao (Gleditsiae Fructus), roast it, remove the skin and seeds, and grind into powder. Apply a small amount to the painful tooth to achieve cure.
Another formula from *Sheng Hui Fang*:
Take Song Bai Zhi (Pini Resina), shape it into a sharp cone, and insert it into the carious cavity. After a short while, the carious worms will emerge along with the pine resin, and the disease will be cured.
Another formula from *Sheng Hui Fang*:
Take half a liang of Ji She Xiang (Caryophylli Flos), chop it finely, decoct it in one zhong zhen of water until six fen remains, filter out the dregs, hold the liquid in the mouth while hot, and spit it out when cool.
