Decoct in water, take hot.
Zhou Xuzhong said: Yang governs opening and Yin governs closing, this is the natural principle. Now, if the Jiao Gu does not open, it indicates extreme Yin. One must add Rou Gui (Cinnamon Bark) to disseminate Yang harmony, otherwise it will be effective; Gui Ban (Tortoise Plastron) and Fa Hui (Carbonized Human Hair) are purely Yin substances and can only serve as guides for unblocking the Ren Mai (Conception Vessel).
Tuohua Jian (Decoction for Expelling the Fetus) For childbirth at term, this formula is best. It also treats difficult labor, fetus remaining for days, dead fetus, and retained placenta, all excellently.
Quan Dang Gui (1 qian), Zheng Chuan Xiong (3 qian), Shang Qing Gui (Green Cinnamon Twig), Huai Niu Xi (Achyranthes Bidentata Root), Jing Che Qian (Plantago Seed).
Decoct in water, mix with wine before taking. If the fetus is dead and not expelled, or the placenta does not come, add Mang Xiao (Mirabilite) 5 qian; for severe Qi deficiency, add Ren Shen (Ginseng Radix) 2-3 qian, and Fu Zi (Aconite Lateral Root) 2 qian more. There will be no case that does not succeed. This formula is hundreds of times more effective than Pingwei San plus Mang Xiao because its medicinal properties are sweet and warm, not damaging the Yuan Qi (Original Qi).

Decoct in water, mix with wine before taking.
Shenghua Tang (Decoction for Generating the New) This formula removes the old and generates the new. For any postpartum condition, whether sick or healthy, taking a few doses ensures the expulsion of lochia and rapid generation of new blood. It is indeed an essential medicine for postpartum care. The secular world often uses Hong Tang (Brown Sugar) to expel stasis, but this damages the Stomach Qi; beware!
Da Guishen (Large Dong Quin Root Body) (5 qian), Zheng Chuan Xiong (Sichuan Lovage Rhizome) (2.5 qian), Guang Tao Ren (Peach Kernel) (21 grains), Hei Pao Jiang (Charred Ginger) (1 qian), Zhi Gan Cao (Honey-fried Licorice Root) (1 qian).

Bai Dang Gui (White Dong Quin) (3 qian), Zheng Chuan Xiong (Sichuan Lovage Rhizome) (2 qian), Xian Ze Lan (Fresh Lycopodium Herb) (3 qian), Jingjie Sui (Schizonepeta Spike) (1 qian), Yimucao (Motherwort Herb) (2 qian), Select Ren Shen (Ginseng Radix) (1 qian), Zhi Gan Cao (Honey-fried Licorice Root) (0.5 qian).

To prevent blood syncope, add Jiu Chao Jingjie (Wine-fried Schizonepeta) 2 qian to this formula. Decoct this medicine first, and take it immediately after the placenta is expelled. There will absolutely be no risk of blood syncope. Verified thousands of times, never misleading people.
Bawei Dihuang Tang (Eight-Ingredient Rehmannia Pill Decoction) For postpartum floating Qi and panting, in cases not severely deficient, use this to guide Qi back to its source. It cannot be used for extreme deficiency.

Decoct until very concentrated, take on an empty stomach.
Liuhui Yangyin Yin (Six-Ingredient Return-Yang Drink) When True Yuan (Original Essence) is exhausted, Qi and Blood are depleted, and Yin and Yang are about to collapse, only this formula can reverse the situation. It truly possesses the first merit of reversing heaven and assisting transformation. This is a new formula by Zhang Jingyue, known by few.
Da Shu Di (Large Prepared Rehmanniae Radix) (5 qian), Da Dang Gui (Large Dong Quin) (3 qian), Hei Pao Jiang (Charred Ginger) (2 qian), Shu Fu Zi (Prepared Aconite Lateral Root) (2 qian), Qing Hua Gui (Green Refined Cinnamon) (2 qian), Select Ren Shen (Ginseng Radix) (3-5 qian).
Adding Lu Rong (Deer Antler Velvet) a few qian makes the effect faster. Use Sheng Jiang (Fresh Ginger) and Da Zao (Jujube) as guides, decoct in water and take warm. This formula is neither harsh nor fierce; it can restore scattered Yuan Yang (Original Yang) and gather chaotic Yin Blood. In saving emergencies and supporting collapse, nothing surpasses it.
Simple Formulas for Inducing Labor
If one can remain calm, endure pain, and wait for the right time, there will surely be no difficulty in childbirth. Or if due to panic and urgency, one unfortunately encounters this, the methods for inducing labor must be known; or if in remote areas where medical supplies are inconvenient, it is indeed distressing. Therefore, simple formulas are attached here for emergency use.
One for transverse or breech presentation, retained placenta, and passing of a dead fetus. Use 49 Castor Seeds (Bi Ma Zi), remove shells, grind into a paste. Shave a small amount of hair from the top of the mother's head (Baihui area), apply the castor paste. After a while, when a lifting sensation is felt in the abdomen, remove it immediately. Then, urgently apply it to the soles of the feet. Natural delivery will follow. Remove the medicine quickly after birth; delay may cause prolapse of the intestines. If the placenta does not come, applying it to the soles of the feet will cause it to pass.
In remote villages without medicine, if this unfortunate situation occurs, find Sichuan Pepper Leaves (Hua Jiao Ye), Citron Leaves (Xiang Yuan Ye), Pomelo Leaves (You Zi Ye), Cornus Leaves (Zhu Yu Ye), Fresh Ginger (Sheng Jiang), Green Onion (Sheng Cong), Perilla Leaves (Zi Su). Boil a basin of strong decoction. When ready, have the mother sit on a small stool over the basin, pour the liquid to wash the umbilicus, abdomen, and vulva. Wash for a long time; warmth promotes Qi and Blood flow, and delivery occurs instantly. Missing one or two of these leaves is acceptable.
For dead fetus retention and delayed placenta, use 1 sheng of Black Soybeans (Hei Dou), stir-fry until fragrant. Add 1 large bowl of Vinegar (Cu), boil until reduced to 60-70%. Remove beans, take the decoction in three doses. Massage the lower abdomen gently with warm hands. The fetus and placenta will descend.
Another method: Take 1 large cup of Winter Honey (Dong Mi), mix with boiling water and take. Delivery follows immediately. If the placenta is delayed, take another bowl, and it will pass.
For difficult labor, transverse/breech presentation, or dry Blood Sea leading to dead fetus retention, causing panic and imminent death, urgently use 5 qian of Pi Xiao (Niter), 1.5 qian of Shu Fu Zi (Prepared Aconite), half a cup of good Wine, half a cup of Tong Bian (Child's Urine). Boil together three times, take warm. Delivery follows. Hundred percent effective.
For mothers with extremely weak Yuan Qi and delayed placenta, use 3 qian of Zhen Qing Hua Gui (True Green Refined Cinnamon), Dang Gui (Dong Quin) and Chuan Xiong (Lovage Rhizome) 1.5 qian each. Decoct in wine, take hot. Delivery follows.
To expel a dead fetus: Use 0.5 jin of Mai Ya (Sprouted Barley), crush, decoct in 2 large bowls of water until reduced to 1 bowl. Take, and it passes.
Another formula: Tian Hua Fen (Trichosanthes Root) wine-fried 4 qian, Shang Rou Gui (Cinnamon Twig), Huai Niu Xi (Achyranthes Root), Dan Dou Chi (Fermented Soybean) each 3 qian.
Decoct in 2 bowls of water until reduced to 1 bowl. Take hot, and it passes.
Shuliao Wuji San (Cooked Five Accumulations Powder) This formula specifically treats postpartum external contraction and internal injury, stagnant Blood, phlegm stagnation and Qi constraint, headache and body pain, aversion to cold and fever, heart and abdominal pain, alternating chills and fever, malaria-like symptoms, lower abdominal fullness, wind-cold cough, vomiting of phlegm-water, loss of appetite, chest tightness and shortness of breath, convulsions of hands and feet resembling stroke, soreness and pain of limbs, whole-body numbness. It treats all unknown strange syndromes after childbirth.
After childbirth, all joints are open, and both Qi and Blood are defeated. Externally, the Cou Li (pores/interstices) are not dense, making one susceptible to Wind-Cold; internally, the Zang-Fu organs are empty, making one susceptible to dietary injury. Slight negligence leads to various syndromes. Ancient texts warn that postpartum treatment should focus primarily on tonifying Qi and Blood, treating miscellaneous diseases secondarily. Later generations followed this. Only knowing tonification, unaware that if Wind-Cold has not dispersed and food has not digested, tonification causes great harm. Ignorant people think the medicinal power hasn't reached yet, tonifying deeper and deeper until death. This is the most common flaw in the world! I previously received instruction on this formula from my master in Tanzhou. Following the method, it always worked smoothly. I dare not keep it secret, teaching it orally and printing it for distribution. For over forty years, the number of lives saved is incalculable. But fearing people do not understand, thinking it is a shallow and simple formula, how could it be so miraculous? Thus ancients said: "A thousand gold is easy to get, one secret is hard to seek." I now reveal the secret, dispelling doubts. Named "Five Accumulations" because this formula removes Cold Accumulation, Blood Accumulation, Qi Accumulation, Phlegm Accumulation, and Food Accumulation. Postpartum weakness exactly violates these five accumulations. Treating five accumulation syndromes with the Five Accumulations formula is indeed matching medicine to disease! Still fearing the pungent and dispersing nature of the herbs, they are stir-fried with vinegar-water, named Shuliao Wuji San (Cooked Five Accumulations Powder), making the medicinal nature mild, releasing the exterior without excessive sweating, resolving accumulation without attacking too harshly. In the formula, Rou Gui (Cinnamon Twig) releases the exterior and drives out cold; Bai Shao (White Peony Root) harmonizes Ying (Nutritive) and Wei (Defensive); Cang Zhu (Atractylodes Rhizome) and Hou Po (Magnolia Bark) move through the Yangming channel to dissipate fullness; Chen Pi (Citrus Peel) and Ban Xia (Pinellia Tuber) regulate rebellious Qi to eliminate phlegm; Chuan Xiong (Lovage Rhizome), Dang Gui (Dong Quin), Sheng Jiang (Fresh Ginger), and Bai Zhi (Angelica Dahurica Root) enter the Blood level to dispel cold-dampness; Zhi Ke (Aurantium Fruit) and Jie Geng (Platycodon Root) widen the chest and diaphragm and benefit the throat; Fu Ling (Poria) eliminates fluid retention and calms the Heart; Gan Cao (Licorice Root) harmonizes the middle and tonifies Earth. For severe deficiency and timidity, add Ren Shen (Ginseng Radix); for slight deficiency, it may be omitted. Together, they form a wonderful agent for warming the middle and dispersing cold, suitable for postpartum use in all cases.
Wuji San (Five Accumulations Powder) This original formula contains Ren Shen (Ginseng Radix), but because people dare not use it lightly, it is not listed in the prescription.
Xiang Bai Zhi (Fragrant Angelica Dahurica Root) (1 qian, not fried), Shang Qing Gui (Green Cinnamon Twig) (1 qian, not fried), Chuan Hou Po (Sichuan Magnolia Bark) (1 qian), Zheng Chuan Xiong (Sichuan Lovage Rhizome) (1 qian), Ya Jie Geng (Sprouted Platycodon Root) (1 qian), Chen Zhi Ke (Aged Aurantium Fruit), Bai Yun Ling (White Poria), Chao Cang Zhu (Fried Atractylodes Rhizome), Hang Bai Shao (Zhejiang White Peony Root), Fa Ban Xia (Processed Pinellia Tuber), Hei Pao Jiang (Charred Ginger), Zhi Gan Cao (Honey-fried Licorice Root), Guang Chen Pi (Citrus Peel) (all 1 qian), Quan Dang Gui (Whole Dong Quin) (2 qian), add Ren Shen (Ginseng Radix) for deficiency (1 qian).
Weigh all herbs. Except for Bai Zhi (Angelica Dahurica Root) and Rou Gui (Cinnamon Twig) which are not fried, combine the rest as one dose. Mix half a small cup of good Vinegar with one cup of clean Water. Moisten the herbs with this mixture. Stir-fry in a pot until yellow. Remove, spread on the ground to dissipate fire toxicity, cool down, then add Bai Zhi (Angelica Dahurica Root) and Rou Gui (Cinnamon Twig). Add Sheng Jiang (Fresh Ginger) (3 slices) and Da Zao (Jujube) (3 pieces). Decoct in 2 bowls of water until reduced to 1 bowl. Take hot. This formula is very stable. After seeing effects, continue taking it according to the pattern, regardless of the number of doses, until cured. Contraindicated in postpartum cases with profuse sweating, diarrhea, or collapse. This formula only removes disease, it does not tonify deficiency. For deficiency syndromes, refer to previous formulas.
Simple Postpartum Formulas
During childbirth, if the uterus prolapses first, then the baby is born, and after birth the uterus does not retract, it is very critical. Mix half a cup of Vinegar with half a cup of fresh well water. Apply to the mother's face. Every time she contracts, retract three times. Truly a good method.
Another method: Grind 49 Castor Seeds (Bi Ma Zi) into a paste after removing shells. Apply to the top of the mother's head. The uterus will retract. Remove the medicine urgently, wash with warm water. If the uterus is dry and hard to retract, moisten it with water used for sharpening knives, then drink a decoction of Xiong Ci Shi (Male Magnetite). The uterus will retract naturally.
Mothers, even in daily life, occasionally strain too much, injuring the Zi Chang (uterine ligaments), causing uterine prolapse. Use Ai Wan (Moxa cones) the size of mung beans, moxibustion on Baihui (GV20) acupoint on the top of the head, 3-5 sessions. It will retract.
Another method: Clean with salt water. Then burn Wu Ling Zhi (Trogopterus Dung) in a bucket, let smoke rise. Have the patient sit on the bucket, fumigating from above.
Another method: Refine 5 jin of Clear Oil (Sesame Oil). Place in a basin. Wait until warm-cool. Have the mother sit in the oil basin for about the time it takes to eat a meal. Then, make fine powder of Zao Jiao (Gleditsia Sinensis Fruit), blow a tiny amount (1 li) into the nose to induce sneezing. It stops immediately.
Postpartum Yumen (vaginal opening) swelling and pain: Decoct 3 liang of She Chuang Zi (Cnidium Fruit) in water, wash frequently. It heals. Also, mix Cong Bai (Scallion White) and Ru Xiang (Frankincense) into a paste, apply to the swelling. Effective.
Postpartum milk obstruction: Fry Tian Hua Fen (Trichosanthes Root) until yellow, grind into fine powder. Take 2 qian each time, mixed with strong decoction of Hong Fan Dou (Red Adzuki Bean). Take twice daily. Milk flows.
For mothers with extreme Qi and Blood deficiency having no milk:
Quan Dang Gui (Whole Dong Quin) (3 qian), Zheng Chuan Xiong (Sichuan Lovage Rhizome) (2 qian), Chuan Shan Jia (Pangolin Scale, roasted), Wang Bu Liu Xing (Vaccaria Seed) (each 1.5 qian), Chuan Mu Tong (Akebia Stem) (0.5 qian).
Decoct with one pig trotter. Cook until the trotter is soft. Remove herbs, drink the soup and eat the trotter. Flow starts immediately.
Postpartum Yang Qi deficiency and cold, Yumen (vaginal opening) does not close:
Shi Liu Huang (Native Sulfur), Hai Piao Xiao (Cuttlefish Bone), Bei Wu Wei Zi (Schisandra Berry) in equal parts.
Grind into powder, apply to the affected area. Change three times daily.
Postpartum Yumen (vaginal opening) does not close, Yin Hu (vulva) protrudes.
Shi Liu Huang (Native Sulfur) (3 qian), Tu Si Zi (Cuscuta Seed), Wu Zhu Yu (Evodia Fruit) (each 2 qian), She Chuang Zi (Cnidium Fruit) (1.5 qian).
Decoct in 1 large bowl of water until reduced to half a bowl. Wash frequently. It retracts naturally.
Postpartum bladder abrasion, inability to urinate except for dribbling.
Huang Si Juan (Yellow Silk Fabric) (1 chi, cut into pieces), Mu Dan Pi (Moutan Cortex), Xian Bai Ji (Fresh Bletilla Rhizome) (each 1 qian).
Grind Dan Pi (Moutan Cortex) and Bai Ji (Bletilla Rhizome) into powder. Boil with Huang Si Juan (Yellow Silk Fabric) in 1 bowl of water until the fabric dissolves. Take on an empty stomach. Do not make noise while taking; if you make noise, it will be ineffective.
