[Severing the Umbilical Cord] The umbilical cord should be cauterized immediately after cutting. For both male and female infants, retaining a length of six cun is most appropriate. Cauterizing and moxibustion on the navel prevent invasion by Wind pathogenic factors, while sealing the navel with Hu Fen (Lead Carbonate) avoids dampness.
[Note] Upon birth, first heat scissors over fire and sever the umbilical cord. Then, use a heating instrument to cauterize around the base of the cord; the length should be standardized at six cun, neither too short nor too long. If too short, it damages the Zang organs; if too long, it injures the muscles. After severing, apply "Lao Qi Bing Zi" (Cauterizing Navel Cake) for moxibustion on the navel to prevent external Wind pathogens from entering. Subsequently, apply "Hu Fen San" (Hu Fen Powder) to the umbilical stump and seal it with soft silk and fresh cotton to avoid urine moisture and Wind pathogens. If medicines are unavailable, use a small piece of finely processed Mugwort (Ai Ye), sealing it according to the aforementioned method.
Formula: Lao Qi Bing Zi (Cauterizing Navel Cake)
Fermented Soybean (Douchi), Beeswax (Huang La) in equal parts; Musk (Shexiang) in a small amount.
Grind Douchi and Shexiang evenly, melt Huang La, and shape into cakes according to the size of the navel for moxibustion.
Formula: Hu Fen San (Hu Fen Powder)
Hu Fen (Lead Carbonate), Zeng Dai Hui (Ash from Steamer Bands), Gan Jiang (Dried Ginger), Bai Shi Zhi (White Halloysite), Mian Hui (Cotton Ash) in equal parts; Musk (Shexiang) in a small amount.
Grind all ingredients into a fine powder. Use one qian per application, applying to the navel and sealing it.
[Bathing the Infant] Use Wu Zhi Tang (Five Branch Decoction) for bathing; the water temperature should be moderate in both winter and summer. Adding Pig Bile (Zhu Dan) removes impurities and nourishes the skin to prevent sores.
[Note] Bathing the infant three days after severing the umbilical cord is an ancient practice, intended to cleanse fetal impurities. During bathing, choose a windless, enclosed place. Do not keep the infant in water for too long. In winter, fear cold invasion; in summer, fear heat injury. To prepare the bath water, boil branches of Peach (Tao), Locust Tree (Huai), Mulberry (Sang), Plum (Mei), and Willow (Liu). Add Pig Bile to remove impurities and nourish the skin, preventing neonatal dermatitis (Tai Chuang).
[Storing the Placenta] Store the placenta in a new bottle, wrap the bottle mouth with silk, and bury it in a sunny, high, dry, and secure location, specifically aligned with Tian De (Heavenly Virtue) and Yue Kong (Moon Void) auspicious directions. This ensures the child lives long and free from disease.
[Note] When storing the placenta, place it in a new bottle and wrap the mouth with green silk. Choose a sunny and high-dry location. On days corresponding to Tian De and Yue Kong auspicious stars, dig a pit three chi deep and bury it. The child will naturally live long and remain healthy. Improper storage of the placenta is detrimental to the child.
