The sudden onset of wheezing is named "Ma Pi Feng" (Horse Spleen Wind), characterized by a high and distended chest, sunken areas under the ribs acting like pits, flaring of the nasal apertures, and mental restlessness. Taking Wu Hu Tang (Five Tiger Decoction) and Yi Nian Jin (One Pinch Gold) at this time yields the best efficacy.
[Note] "Ma Pi Feng" is a folk name for sudden wheezing. It occurs because cold pathogenic factors invade the Shu-stream points of the Lung, transform into heat, and obstruct the Lung Meridian. This results in a high chest, shortness of breath, lung distension with wheezing, flapping movement of the two hypochondriac regions leaving pit-like depressions, flaring nostrils, and chaotic spirit/qi. Initially, urgently administer Wu Hu Tang (Five Tiger Decoction), followed by Yi Nian Jin (One Pinch Gold) to purge downwards. If the qi mechanism opens, the wheezing will naturally cease. If infants within one hundred days of birth present with this condition, the disease is often incurable.

Phlegm arises when body fluids fail to distribute throughout the four directions; excess Yin transforms into fluid retention (Yin), while excess Yang transforms into phlegm. Thick, sticky, and yellow indicates dry-heat; clear, thin, and white indicates damp-cold.
[Note] Phlegm is formed when the body fluids derived from food and drink fail to distribute in all directions and remain stagnant in the chest. It is mostly caused by irregular diet, or excessive consumption of rich and greasy foods during breastfeeding or eating, leading to the spleen and stomach's inability to transport and transform. If Yin qi is inherently abundant, it transforms into fluid retention; if Yang qi is inherently abundant, it transforms into phlegm. Thick, sticky, yellow, and difficult to expectorate is called Dry Phlegm; clear, thin, white, slippery, and easy to expectorate is called Damp Phlegm. These two types require different treatments: some are suitable for clearing and moistening, others for promoting unblocking and draining.
Dry Phlegm due to Lung dryness is sticky and hard to expel, accompanied by rebellious Qi causing wheezing and coughing, discomfort in lying down, red face, dry mouth, and dark urine. Qing Qi Hua Tan Wan (Clear Qi Transform Phlegl Pill) or Gun Tan Wan (Rolling Phlegm Pill) can be used.
[Note] Dry Phlegm is caused by Fire disturbing the fluids. Excessive Fire leads to abundant, dry, and sticky phlegm, rebellious Qi causing wheezing and coughing, restless sleep at night, red face, dry mouth, and yellow-dark urine. For mild cases, use Qing Qi Hua Tan Wan (Clear Qi Transform Phlegm Pill) to clear them; for severe cases, use Su Ting Gun Tan Wan (Perilla and Lepidium Rolling Phlegm Pill) to purge them.
