General Summary: Infants have weak Qi and thin skin; heat-toxins invade due to deficiency and manifest. It is urgent to clear heat and dissipate wind; once the toxin disperses and wind vanishes, peace will naturally return.
The *Huangdi Neijing* (Yellow Emperor's Inner Canon) states: Red and purple Dan liu (erysipelas-like tumors) all arise from internal stagnation of Heart Fire. The color is red like cinnabar, hence named Dan du (erysipelas). Since the Heart governs blood vessels, heat acts as a medium for blood, corresponding to the Fire element which manifests as red. This is caused by excessive heat in the Heart's blood, leading to wandering rashes across the body. If the wet nurse consumes excessive alcohol, wheat products, and fried or roasted foods, or if clothes heated by fire are used to wrap the infant without cooling down first, this disease can also occur. Cases originating from the abdomen and spreading to the limbs are easy to treat; those originating from the limbs and spreading inward to the abdomen are difficult to cure. One should immediately have someone suck the toxic blood around the affected area until it gathers in one spot, then pierce it with a Bian stone (bloodletting stone) to drain it. Urgently administer Jiedu San (Detoxification Powder) with added Zicao Rong (Radix Lithospermi), and apply external Baiyu San (White Jade Powder). For infants within 100 days of birth, Bian therapy is contraindicated because their muscles cannot withstand it. Generally, treating infant Dan du requires first administering exterior-releasing formulas to internally resolve heat-toxins before applying topical powders; otherwise, the toxin may lack an outlet and penetrate inward, causing harm.
Jing Dan (Startle Erysipelas): In infants under 100 days or over six months, sudden redness and slight swelling of the eyelids appear, accompanied by a bluish-dark complexion, irritability, and crying at night, or a face red as rouge, indicating latent heat inside. Some cases do not show facial redness; initially, during gestation, the mother suffered severe fright, damaging fetal Qi through transmission. After birth, exposure to heat-toxins or further fright and heat causes internal accumulation of heat, manifesting externally. Initially, scattered lesions cover the face, resembling chickenpox, with slightly red extremities but no high fever, appearing and disappearing irregularly. Subsequently, the neck becomes red as cinnabar, named Jing Dan. First wash the eyes with Sisheng San (Four Sages Powder), then use Bairen San (Hundred-Dispersion Powder) to resolve startle and heat. If Dan du is severe, use Siwu Tang (Four Substance Decoction) with Huangqin (Scutellariae Radix). If Jing Dan spreads to the chest, diaphragm, and breast area, accompanied by slight phlegm-cough and convulsions, urgently disperse heat and extract toxins to prevent internal migration, which would cause significant harm. Use Wuhe Tang (Five-Harmony Decoction) with Shengdi Huang (Rehmanniae Radix), Shengma (Cimicifugae Rhizoma), and Dengxincao (Junci Medulla). With such treatment, other complications will not arise; primarily administer Wan'an Yin (Ten-Thousand-Safety Drink).
Eruptions on the body present similarly to the above symptoms, with less dryness and itching, but floating rashes covering the whole body, lethargy, and displeasure, named Yinshi Duzheng (Yin-Damp Toxic Syndrome). Regardless of whether the rash is red or white, if the toxin enters the abdomen, it often causes harm; these conditions must not be lightly dismissed as ordinary.
(Bian Therapy: For treating red, wandering Dan du, allow mouth-sucking to gather toxic blood in one place. Crush fine porcelain, take sharp fragments, split them open using the end of a chopstick, bind tightly with thread. Hold the chopstick lightly between two fingers to expose the porcelain shard. At the site of gathered blood, strike frequently with another chopstick to prick out the toxic blood. For mild cases, simply suck out the toxic blood with the mouth and apply medication. If the lesion is on the head, do not use Bian therapy; instead, use a needle to prick the affected area while lying on the side to drain toxic blood. Delay leads to toxin entering the abdomen, making recovery difficult.)
