When a newborn infant has a red face and cries incessantly, this indicates heat in the Pericardium Meridian (Heart Protector) and Gallbladder Meridian, caused by exposure to maternal heat during the fetal stage. Immediate treatment is required. If umbilical tetanus (Umbilical Wind) becomes possible after three days, it will be difficult to treat. The prescription is listed below:
Stir-fried Zhiqiao (Fructus Aurantii), 4 fen; Stir-fried Shanzhi (Fructus Gardeniae), 4 fen; Stir-fried Cebaiye (Cacumen Platycladi), 4 fen; Stir-fried Chuanlian (Rhizoma Coptidis), 3 fen; Huangbai (Cortex Phellodendri), 2 fen; Sheng Gancao (Radix Glycyrrhizae Preparata), 2 fen; Boheye (Folium Menthae), 4 fen. Decoct in water, strain, add a little white sugar, mix into two teaspoons. Use a duck feather to sweep the upper, lower, left, and right sides of the infant's tongue several times. Stop medication only when the infant's facial color turns pale red. Alternatively, use 4 qian of Wuzhuyu (Fructus Evodiae), grind into fine powder, mix with aged vinegar into a paste, apply to both soles of the feet, change several times a day. After one night, drawing fire downward leads to recovery; this method is most appropriate.
If an infant refuses to suckle without cause and cries incessantly, it is due to Spleen failure in transportation and transformation, and sluggish regulation of intestinal Qi, resulting in abdominal pain. The treatment method is to unblock intestinal Qi, allowing the Spleen Qi to resume transportation and transformation, thereby immediately stopping the abdominal pain. The prescription is listed below:
Tai Wuyao (Radix Linderae), 1 qian, decocted to a concentrated liquid. Wrap cotton in white cloth to form a nipple shape, dip in the medicinal juice, and let the infant suckle until cured.
Incessant crying at night in infants is caused by excessive clothing or bedding leading to sudden internal heat, or sleeping in the same bed as parents, being roasted by their body heat. Generating heat from these causes, clearing heat brings peace. The prescription is listed below:
Xiao Shengdi (Radix Rehmanniae Preparata), 8 fen; Nen Huangqin (Radix Scutellariae), 6 fen; Sheng Gancao (Radix Glycyrrhizae Preparata), 3 fen; Xi Mutong (Caulis Akebiae), 5 fen; Dengxin (Medulla Junci), 5 cun; Zhuye (Folium Bambusae), 4 pieces (as a guiding drug). Decoct in water to half a wine cup, administer slowly with a tea spoon, cure overnight. Alternatively, use the previously mentioned Wuzhuyu powder mixed with vinegar applied to both soles to draw fire downward, which is also effective. Another prescription uses 7 Cicada Sloughs (Periostracum Cicadae), remove feet and head, take the lower half, stir-fry and grind into powder, then mix with 3-4 fen of Boheye (Folium Menthae) decoction for oral administration, stopping crying instantly like magic. Another prescription: if the face is red while crying, it is Pericardium heat; use 3 fen Qingdai (Indigo Naturalis) mixed with 10 cun Dengxin (Medulla Junci) decoction for oral administration, curing immediately.
If an infant cries for a long time, with a blue-white complexion and cold hands and feet, it is external cold constraining internal heat, preventing heat from dispersing outward, causing it to attack inward, potentially leading to convulsions (Wind). Apply the method of releasing cold and guiding heat outward. The prescription is listed below:
Goutenggou (Uncaria Rhynchophylla cum Uncis), 5 fen; Guang Muxiang (Radix Aucklandiae), 3 fen; Hang Baishao (Radix Paeoniae Alba), 5 fen; Ming Tianma (Rhizoma Gastrodiae), 4 fen; Dangguishen (Radix Angelicae Sinensis), 5 fen; Zhu Fushen (Poria Cum Radix Pini), 5 fen; Shengjiang (Rhizoma Zingiberis Recens), 1 slice; Hongzao (Fructus Jujubae), 1 piece (as a guiding drug). Decoct in water to half a wine cup, administer frequently to stop crying and restore calmness.
Curved body with incessant crying indicates direct invasion of Cold Evil causing abdominal pain. Apply the following prescription, which is an external hot compress method:
Dan Douchi (Semen Sojae Preparatum), 1 qian (crushed); Shengjiang (Rhizoma Zingiberis Recens), 1 qian (chopped); Congbai (Bulbus Allii Cepae), 1 cun (chopped); Zhi Gancao (Radix Glycyrrhizae Preparata), 5 fen; Xiaohuixiang (Fructus Foeniculi), 5 fen. Stir-fry together with 1 liang of salt until hot, wrap in cloth, and iron the infant's abdomen to immediately stop crying and pain.
Yellowing of the face and eyes at birth, gradually spreading over the whole body, is called Neonatal Jaundice (Taihuang). This results from damp-heat received during the fetal stage, compounded by dampness acquired after birth. External dampness draws out internal dampness, causing this syndrome. It is formed by Spleen dampness steaming and affecting the Gallbladder, causing bile overflow. The prescription is listed below:
Stir-fried Shanzhi (Fructus Gardeniae), 8 fen; Tianhuafen (Radix Trichosanthis), 8 fen; Mian Yinchen (Herba Artemisiae Scopariae), 1 qian; Dan Douchi (Semen Sojae Preparatum), 1 qian. Decoct in water to half a wine cup, administer slowly to the infant to reduce jaundice and ensure safety; this prescription is very effective. Red spots all over the body with severe itching and incessant crying indicate Blood Heat affected by Wind. The method is listed below:
Xiao Shengdi (Radix Rehmanniae Preparata), 8 fen; Chao Jiesui (Semen Lepidii Preparatum), 7 fen; Bei Fangfeng (Radix Saposhnikoviae), 7 fen; Chao Shanzhi (Fructus Gardeniae Preparatum), 8 fen; Chi Baishao (Radix Paeoniae Rubra), [amount missing in source]. Decoct in water to half a wine cup for oral administration. Externally, use 2 qian Zi Fuping (Herba Urticae Diocis) and 3 qian Huashi (Talcum), grind into fine powder, wrap in summer linen, and rub over the infant's entire body to eliminate redness and itching, restoring health.
Failure of cranial sutures to close is called Fontanelle Delay (Jielu), indicating insufficient Kidney Qi. The method should tonify Yang and nourish the Kidney. The prescription is listed below:
Ganjiang (Rhizoma Zingiberis Preparatum), 7 qian; Xixin (Radix et Rhizoma Asari), 3 qian; Rougui (Cortex Cinnamomi), 5 qian. Grind all medicines into fine powder, mix with aged vinegar into a cake, apply to the depressed area on the top of the head. Recovery occurs when the infant's face turns red after one hour.
Red, swollen, and ulcerated eyes at birth are caused by heat received in the womb and external wind contracted after birth. The treatment uses Earthworm Mud (Excrement of Qu Shan) mixed with tea leaves used for drinking, mashed and applied to the fontanelle. Replace when dry; cure within 3-4 applications. Another prescription uses raw Nanting (Rhizoma Arisaematis) and raw Dahuang (Radix et Rhizoma Rhei) in equal parts, ground into powder, mixed with vinegar, applied to the soles to draw fire downward, curing overnight. If fetal heat is severe or delayed, spreading ulceration may occur, requiring decoctions for efficacy. The prescription is listed below:
Xiao Shengdi (Radix Rehmanniae Preparata), 8 fen; Chi Shaoyao (Radix Paeoniae Rubra), 8 fen; Jiu Chuanxiong (Rhizoma Chuanxiong Preparata), 5 fen; Longdancao (Radix et Rhizoma Gentianae), 6 fen; Sheng Zhiyi (Endocarpium Gardeniae), 6 fen; Dengxin (Medulla Junci) a little as a guiding drug. Decoct in water to a concentrated juice, administer slowly. The dregs can be boiled again in water to make a wine cup, use cotton to gently wash the affected eyes; swelling and redness will subside.
Treatment for swollen and hard cheeks in infants. Newborns under one month suffering from lockjaw refusing milk, silent crying, and swollen/hard lumps in both cheeks are named Tanglangzi (Mantis Child) or Ma Ya Sai. If not treated urgently, swelling extending to the throat and nose is incurable. This syndrome is caused by fetal toxin combined with internal heat and seasonal pathogens. Do not use surgical incision; this is an internal medicine condition, and cutting risks death. Treatment requires both external application and internal administration. Externally, use 7 river snails, a little Moschus (She Xiang), and 5 fen Zhusha (Cinnabaris), mash into mud, apply to the fontanelle until it falls off naturally, do not peel. Prick the swollen area slightly with a silver needle to drain bad blood, then apply Gancao powder mixed with water paste. Fresh Dandelion or white roots of Narcissus mashed and applied is excellent. Internally, use methods of clearing heat, detoxifying, reducing swelling, and unblocking collaterals. The prescription is listed below:
Sheng Bangzi (Fructus Arctii), 8 fen; Sheng Gancao (Radix Glycyrrhizae Preparata), 4 fen; Qing Lianqiao (Fructus Forsythiae), 1 qian; Boheye (Folium Menthae), 5 fen; Dong Sangye (Folium Mori), 8 fen. Decoct half a bowl of water to half a wine cup, administer slowly to cure.
Treatment for mouth swelling and Ma Ya (Horse Teeth) in infants. Swelling in the mouth resembling mushrooms is called Ru Jun. White blisters on gums are called Ma Ya Gan. Preventing nursing, wipe with finger dipped in Gancao water wrapped in green cloth until bleeding occurs. Wipe blood with cotton, apply Qingdai (Indigo Naturalis) powder to cure. For severe cases, use 3 Jiangcan (Bombyx Batryticatus), 4 fen Renzhongbai (Concretio Calcaria), 1 fen Bingpian (Borneolum Syntheticum), grind into powder, apply to lesion. Wait briefly, rinse with tea water, dry with cotton, reapply 3-4 times daily for self-healing. If unresolved, add 3 fen Pengsha (Borax), 3 fen Xuexie (Resuma Draconis), 3 fen Qingdai (Indigo Naturalis), 1.5 fen Ercha (Massa Medicata Fermentata) powder, wash and apply 3-4 times daily for guaranteed cure.
Countless white spots in the mouth within 100 days, removable by wiping, covering the whole mouth and extending into the throat, causing day-and-night crying and refusal to nurse, is commonly known as Kou Feng (Mouth Wind) or E Kou Gan (Goose Mouth Candidiasis). Quickly use 5 fen Huanglian (Rhizoma Coptidis) and 5 fen Zidi Ding (Herba Violae), decoct in soup, wipe with silk-wrapped finger, then apply Yi Yuan San (Yiyuan Powder) to prevent recurrence. Further, use 1 qian Yi Yuan San (Yiyuan Powder) with a little Dengxin (Medulla Junci) and Zhuye (Folium Bambusae), decoct, clarify, and administer to clear internal heat toxins effectively. Another prescription: grind Furonghua (Flos Hibisci) and Zhen Qingdai (Indigo Naturalis) into powder, apply after breaking white spots, also very effective.
Saliva flowing from the corners of the mouth, wetting the lips, turning red and rotting, indicates Cold in the Spleen Meridian. At this time, stool is loose, urine is clear and long. Apply methods of warming Spleen, promoting dampness removal, and regulating Qi. The prescription is listed below:
Baizhu (Rhizoma Atractylodis Macrocephalae), 5 fen; Qingpi (Pericarpium Citri Reticulatae Viride), 5 fen; Paojiang (Rhizoma Zingiberis Preparatum), 5 fen; Fa Banxia (Rhizoma Pinelliae Preparatum), 1 qian; Dingxiang (Flos Caryophylli), 1 qian. Grind into powder, form pills with rice gruel size of millet grains. Infants under one year take 10 pills per dose with rice gruel, self-healing upon completion. If symptoms persist but stool is dry, urine short and red, vomiting milk with sour smell, and restless sleep, it is Spleen Heat. Damp-heat in Spleen Meridian stagnates Qi, causing Stomach fullness and indigestion leading to milk regurgitation. Treat with the following prescription:
Huashi (Talcum), 8 fen; Biandouyi (Testa Phaseoli Angularis), 1 qian; Xi Chuanlian (Rhizoma Coptidis), 5 fen; Guang Chenpi (Pericarpium Citri Reticulatae), 5 fen; Ji Neijin (Endothelium Corneum Gigeriae Galli), 1 qian; Dengxin (Medulla Junci) and Zhuye (Folium Bambusae) a little. Decoct half a tea cup of water to one wine cup, administer slowly to cure.
Wheezing, rapid breathing, coughing, and high chest within 100 days is named Gui Xiong (Turtle Chest). Caused by Lung contracting external pathogens without timely treatment, leading to swelling and inflammation. This condition is urgent; delay leads to shoulder breathing, nervous tension, and convulsions, resulting in immediate death. Use potent and fast-acting drugs to save life. Do not hesitate due to harsh drug properties. The prescription is listed below:
Jiu Junjun (Radix et Rhizoma Rhei Preparata), 5 fen; Sheng Shigao (Gypsum Fibrosum), 8 fen; Xingrenni (Semen Armeniacae Amarum Preparatum), 1 qian; Xi Mutong (Caulis Akebiae), 7 fen; Zhi Maren (Semen Persicae Preparatum), 4 fen; Sheng Gancao (Radix Glycyrrhizae Preparata), 4 fen; Fa Banxia (Rhizoma Pinelliae Preparatum), 7 fen; Hang Baishao (Radix Paeoniae Alba), 1 qian; Tinglizi (Semen Lepidii et Descurainiae), 5 fen (wrapped in cloth); Hongzao (Fructus Jujubae), 3 pieces (pitted). Decoct one tea cup of water to small half tea cup, administer frequently. Descending phlegm from lungs smooths Qi, clears heat and inflammation, curing the syndrome.
