Dampness originates from the deficiency of Spleen Qi, which fails to transform and transport fluids for normal circulation. The nature of water is stagnant and immobile; over time, it putrefies and transforms, invading the Spleen Earth, thereby forming various manifestations of Dampness syndromes. Its symptoms include a dark and pale complexion, rough and unmoistened skin, dull purple lips that are not ruddy and vibrant, or phlegm that is easily generated but difficult to resolve, or immediate diarrhea with slight dietary injury, or passage of clear watery stools, or vomiting of sour and putrid food, or body fever accompanied by easy sweating, or limb fatigue with heavy head. All such symptom manifestations belong to Spleen Dampness syndromes. The treatment method uses Cangzhu (Atractylodis Rhizoma) and Baizhu (Atractylodis Macrocephalae Rhizoma) as principal herbs, added with Tu Chao Hang Shao (Earth-fried Paeoniae Radix Alba), Mugua (Chaenomelis Fructus), Hua Binglang (Arecae Semen cum Endocarpo), Banxia Qu (Fermented Pinelliae Tuber), Guang Chenpi (Citri Reticulatae Pericarpium), Chi Fuling (Poria with Red Core), Cheqiancao (Plantaginis Herba), Zhi Gancao (Honey-fried Glycyrrhizae Radix et Rhizoma), and Wumei (Mume Fructus), among others. These are decocted in water into a concentrated liquid and taken while warm, which will surely leach out dampness and invigorate the Spleen Yang. If food stagnation and water retention occur, and Spleen Qi fails to transform them, leading to the generation of Phlegm-Fluids, the treatment method should employ Xiaodao Erchen Tang (Digestion-Assisting Two-Aged Decoction), added with Pao Jiang (Prepared Zingiberis Rhizoma), Jiang Zhuru (Bamboo Shavings with Ginger), and Chao Zhiqiao (Stir-fried Aurantii Fructus Immaturus), which can guide the discharge of Phlegm-Fluids and eliminate food stagnation while strengthening the Spleen. The formula for Xiaodao Erchen Tang is listed below:
Xiaodao Erchen Tang Formula
Maocangzhu (1 qian) Jiaobaizhu (1 qian) Guangchenpi (1.5 qian) Banxiaqu (2 qian) Fulingkuai (2 qian) Chao Shenqu (2 qian)
Xisharen (1 qian) Zhi gancao (0.5 qian) All the above herbs are shared with two tea bowls of water, decocted into three-quarters of a tea bowl of concentrated liquid, and administered at one time. This dosage is for children around five years old; for children around one year old, the dose must be halved. If tinea and eczema appear on the limbs, body, face, etc., this is the outward manifestation of Spleen Dampness dispersing. One must absolutely avoid applying external medications to the skin surface to block the exit path of dampness; instead, only internal administration of Qingre Lishi (Clear Heat and Promote Urination to Drain Dampness) herbs is permissible. Once the Qi transformation within the Spleen is unblocked, dampness will dissipate along with the Qi movement. External damp-toxins without roots on the skin surface will naturally scab and heal without treatment.
