For fright caused by external objects, Zhenxin Huanglian Anshen Wan (Heart-Calming Coptis Spirit-Calming Pill) is appropriate. For fright caused by qi disturbance, Hanshuishi Anshen Wan (Calcitum Spirit-Calming Pill) is appropriate. Fangfeng Wan (Saposhnikovia Pill) is strictly contraindicated because Fangfeng (Saposhnikoviae Radix) is a pungent and warm herb that will inevitably cause death. Why? Pungency disperses, floating heat belongs to Fire; this can make the Mother organ (Liver) excessive and assist the Child organ (Heart) in becoming overly vigorous, all of which are fatal. If diarrhea occurs due to fright with green stool, one should first calm the Liver using substances like Zhusha (Cinnabar), and strictly avoid cold and cooling energies. Liangjing Wan (Cooling Convulsion Pill) is strictly forbidden because Wind-Wood excess will overcome Spleen-Stomach Earth; one must first strengthen the Earth before draining the Wood. Yan Xiaozhong’s compilation of Qian Yi’s formulas used Yihuang San (Benefit Yellow Powder) to tonify Earth, which was erroneous. The formula contains Dingxiang (Eugeniae Flos), which is pungent and hot, assisting Fire; when Fire is excessive, Earth becomes even more deficient. Qingjupi (Citri Reticulatae Pericarpium Viride) drains Lung Metal; combined with the pungent-heat of Dingxiang, it heavily drains Lung and Large Intestine. When Spleen is Excess, one should drain its Child (Heart); now, with Spleen Deficiency, draining the Child further assists Fire, doubly weakening Earth, undoubtedly leading to death. In cases of Wind-Wood excess, the pulse at the right Guan position is surging and large, the palms are hot, and the abdominal skin is hot; how can one use herbs that assist Fire and drain Metal? If Cold Water attacks Spleen Earth, the disease manifests as vomiting, abdominal pain, and dysentery with greenish-white stools; in such cases, Yihuang San is a sacred medicine. Now, I establish a formula: first drain Fire, tonify Metal, and greatly tonify Earth, which is a divine treatment method. Use Huangqi (Astragali Radix) 2 qian, Renshen (Ginseng Radix) 1 qian, Zhi Gancao (Prepared Glycyrrhizae Radix et Rhizoma) 5 fen, plus Baishao Yao (Paeoniae Radix Alba) 1 qian. These four ingredients are sweet and warm, capable of tonifying Yuan Qi; Sweetness can drain Fire. As stated in the *Neijing*: "When Heat invades internally, drain it with Sweetness, gather it with Sourness." Baishao Yao is sour and cold; Cold can drain Fire, and Sourness can drain Liver Wood while greatly tonifying Lung Metal. By doing so, Metal and Earth positions are supplemented; when Metal is strong, Fire becomes weak, from where would Wind-Wood come to attack Earth? Only then can Wind pathogens be drained. As for Yihuang San, Lizhong Wan (Regulate the Middle Pill), and Yangshen Dan (Nourish Spirit Pill), these are all divine medicines treating severe Cold-Dampness in Spleen and Stomach. However, if the condition involves latent Fire in Spleen and Stomach, insufficiency due to overwork, or slow convulsions resulting from Stomach deficiency after taking hot herbs or Croton Fructus (Badou), using these medicines will certainly harm life. Slow convulsions arise from prolonged diarrhea causing Spleen and Stomach deficiency. Qian Yi’s use of Qianghuo Gao (Notopterygii Rhizoma Extract) to treat slow convulsions was erroneous. Spleen deficiency occurs because Fire pathogen attacks the Earth position; thus it is said, "coming from behind is Deficient Pathogen." Excessive Fire makes Wood excessive, and excessive Wood attacks Earth. One should tonify the source of Earth with Sweet-Warm herbs in the Heart Meridian, drain Fire with Sweet-Cold herbs in the Spleen Earth, and tonify Metal with Acid-Cool herbs in the Spleen Earth, thereby making Metal strong and Fire weak in the Spleen Earth, causing Wind-Wood to become naturally deficient.
