Infants crying at night is due to latent cold in the body. Yin qi prevails at night, causing cold to move; when cold moves, it leads to extreme yin generating dryness, and excessive cold causes pain, hence the crying at night and cessation during the day. The primary treatment is *Dianteng San* (Uncaria Decoction).
*Dianteng San* (Uncaria Decoction)
Ingredients: Uncariae Ramulus cum Uncis (*Gouteng*), Poria (*Fushen*), Poria (*Fuling*), Ligusticum Chuanxiong Rhizoma (*Chuanxiong*), Angelicae Sinensis Radix (*Danggui*), Aucklandiae Radix (*Muxiang*) (each 1 qian), Glycyrrhizae Radix et Rhizoma (*Gancao*) (0.5 qian).
Usage: Powder the above ingredients. Take 1 qian per dose, add fresh ginger and jujube, simmer slightly, and administer. If the infant cries with restlessness due to Heart heat, symptoms such as facial redness, white tongue coating, and dark, scanty urine will necessarily be present. In this case, remove *Danggui* and *Muxiang* from *Dianteng San*, add 1 qian of Cinnabar powder (*Zhusha*), grind and mix well. Take 1 qian per dose, mixed with water decocted from *Muxiang*. Additionally, some infants cry at night due to violating taboos; fumigate with vinegar-charcoal and administer *Suhe Xiang Wan* (Styrax Pill) to urgently expel the pathogenic factor.
Chest protrusion and fullness, resembling a turtle's shell, is caused by Heat affecting the Lung Meridian. This can result from the nursing mother drinking excessively, breastfeeding during summer heat and irritability, or the nursing mother consuming too much of the "Five Pungent Spices" (*Wuxin*).
Prescription: Rhei Radix et Rhizoma (*Chuan Dahuang*) (3 fen, roasted), Asparagi Radix (*Tianmendong*) (core removed), Armeniacae Semen Amarum (*Xingren*) (skin and tips removed), Lilii Bulbus (*Baihe*), Akebiae Caulis (*Mutong*), Morus Alba Cortex (*Sangbaipi*) (stir-fried), Descurainiae Semen (*Tian Tingli*) (stir-fried and crushed), Gypsum Fibrosum (*Shigao*).
Usage: Powder the above ingredients, bind with refined honey into pills the size of mung beans. Take 5 pills per dose after meals and before bed, dissolved in warm water.
If an infant is not properly protected after birth, exogenous wind may invade the spine and enter the bone marrow. Alternatively, sitting too early can also lead to kyphosis with a high back resembling a turtle shell. However, this often becomes a chronic disease; occasionally, moxibustion yields results. Locate Feishu (BL13) [located 1.5 cun lateral to the lower border of the spinous process of the 3rd thoracic vertebra] and Geshu (BL17) [located 1.5 cun lateral to the lower border of the spinous process of the 7th thoracic vertebra]. Use the middle segment of the infant's middle finger as 1 cun standard. Moxa cones should be the size of a wheat grain, stopping after 3-5 moxa cones (zhuang).
*Anqi San* (Navel-Anchoring Powder): Treats oozing or redness and swelling of the umbilicus.
Usage: Apply calcined Halloysitum Rubrum (*Baishizhi*) powder (roasted to remove fire toxicity) to the area, three times daily; or apply ash from burnt hair (*Youfa Hui*); or apply *Danggui* powder.
Umbilical Ulcer:
Usage: Apply *Danggui* powder, or ash from toad (*Hamagui Hui*), which is also effective.
Infants with insufficient congenital endowment have deficient Qi and Blood, resulting in thin muscles and exposed joints, resembling the knees of a crane. This is also attributed to Kidney deficiency. Kidney deficiency leads to internal depletion of essence and marrow, causing the skin and integument to lose nourishment. They are easily attacked by pathogenic factors, becoming increasingly emaciated and withered. This is likely the joint pathology known as Crane-Knee Disease (*He Xi*). Use Qian Yi's *Dihuang Wan* (Rehmannia Pill) as the base formula, adding processed Antler (*Lurong*) and Achyranthes Bidentata Root (*Niuxi*) (each 3 qian). Prepare and administer according to standard methods. For children over three years old, administer 15 pills per dose.
