When heat pathogen clashes with blood, and wind-cold takes advantage, redness and swelling wander throughout the body. This condition often arises because the nursing mother consumes excessive alcohol, wheat products, or fried and roasted foods, or because clothes dried by fire are not allowed to cool before being put on the infant. This disease may manifest on the hands and feet, or on the head, face, chest, and back, causing the child irritability, abdominal distension, intense heat like fire, and unbearable pain. Once the toxin enters the abdomen and kidneys, it becomes incurable. Yang Shi stated: Dan Du (Erysipelas) has five colors, caused by blood-heat and wind-toxin, varying in excess and deficiency, cold and heat, hence the different color changes. The Classics state: Red and purple Dan Liu (tumors) result from internal stagnation of Heart Fire. Red like cinnabar, hence named Dan Du (Poisonous Erysipelas). Since the Heart governs blood, and heat acts as the medium for blood, corresponding to fire and appearing red, this indicates excessive Heat in the Blood of the Heart moving violently. Thus, the toxic qi wanders throughout the body. Cases originating from the abdomen and spreading to the limbs are easier to treat; those originating from the limbs and entering the abdomen are difficult to treat. The general prescription is Baidu San (Detoxification Powder) added with Zicao Radix Arnebiae (Zicaorong). Externally apply Baiyu San (White Jade Powder). Generally, treating pediatric Dan Du requires first administering exterior-releasing herbs to internally resolve heat-toxin before applying external treatments. If the toxic qi has no outlet and penetrates inward, it harms the person. When rashes appear on the body with similar symptoms but less dryness and itching, floating over the whole body, accompanied by lethargy and displeasure, it is named Yin Shi Du Zheng (Yin-Damp Toxic Syndrome). For these two syndromes, regardless of red or white color, if the toxin enters the abdomen and kidneys, it causes harm and must not be neglected, otherwise it leads to self-inflicted distress.
