Mao Xiansheng stated: When an infant develops Ke Wu (Guest Worry, a condition caused by external spiritual or environmental factors) after birth, the complexion appears cyanotic and dark, the eyes are tightly closed, vomiting occurs preventing milk intake. This condition arises because after birth, it is inevitable for outsiders to visit; there may be individuals with body odor, or those affected by a woman's unclean menstruation, or outsiders carrying evil spirits who touch the newborn. Consequently, during breastfeeding, the infant is exposed to objects with abnormal qi. Since the infant's qi and blood are not yet established, they are struck by wind-pathogens, leading to this disease. Treatment should first apply Zhusha Gao (Cinnabar Paste, see the Jing Ji section for the formula) to the nipple for the infant to suckle, followed by administering Zhenxin Wan (Heart-Calming Pill, for palpitations) or Jiaxing Pi San (Clam Spleen Powder, for anorexia), which will result in recovery. If the infant refuses milk, stares fixedly, and has a hard abdomen, it indicates a fatal prognosis. Generally, for a newborn, family members should not immediately allow outsiders to enter the room for inspection, as each household has its own deities, and one must fear that a woman's axillary odor or menstrual impurity might offend the infant, causing Ke Wu. This is the method of nurturing infants.
The *Qianjin Fang* records: Cut hair from the rotating fur on the donkey's front shoulder blade, sized like a bean, decoct it in cow's milk until the hair dissolves. Once the medicine is prepared, apply it to the nipple for the infant to drink; upon entering the throat, the condition is cured. Alternatively, burn three cun of the mother's girdle along with hair, mix with cow's milk, and administer. Another method is to take the nasal mucus of a cow and administer it. Yet another method is to apply the saliva from a cow's mouth to the nipple for the infant to drink.
To treat infants who feel distressed when seeing people and have sounds in their abdomen, use the Sanwu Shaofen San (Three-Item Calcined Powder) formula.
Take ten strands of hair previously removed from the fontanelle of a person, add a small amount of the severed umbilical cord of the infant, calcine them together into ash, grind into fine powder, mix with milk, and feed to the infant, resulting in immediate cure.
The *Qianjin Fang* discusses: Whenever individuals travel on horseback, they absorb the foul smell of horse sweat. If they do not wash and change clothes before approaching the infant, it causes the infant to suffer from Ma Ke Wu (Horse Guest Worry). The infant suddenly seeing a horse, hearing a horse neigh and becoming frightened, or coming into contact with horse odor on clothing from the horse, all cause the infant to suffer from Ma Ke Wu. Careful protection is essential, especially for infants under one year old. The symptoms include abdominal pain, vomiting of green, yellow, or white fluids, separation of water and grain in the stool, and severe cases may lead to premature death.
The *Qianjin Fang* method for treating infants suffering from Ma Ke Wu (applicable also to human Ke Wu):
Make pills from rice flour, sized like soybeans. Rub them on the infant's palms, soles, chest center, and above and below the umbilicus, moving in circular motions. Chant the spell: "Mo Jiagong, Mo Jiamu, Mo Jizi'er ku Yu Ketou, cong wo shi, Bianque sui liang buru shan tuo liang." (Rubbing Master Father, Rubbing Mother, Rubbing Child suffers from Guest Worry, starting from me, although Bian Que is good, skilled spitting is better.) After chanting, discard the pill on the road.
Another method:
Place a knife horizontally on the stove, undress the infant to expose the heart and abdomen (*Yi* commentary notes: expose the area), hold the knife towards the infant, and chant: "Tuo zhe yi dao ni xiang xin fu feifei huanghuang, ri chu dongfang beiyin xiangyang, Ge Gong Ge Gong buzhi he gong (Ji commentary says: Ge Gong Ge Mu buzhi he gong), zi lai bu shi qu wanggu, guo yu shengren tou, liangshang chen tian zhi shen, huxia tu gui suo jing, da dao huan xi dui zao jun erqi tuo, ke yu er jing tuo feifei." (Spit towards the heart and abdomen with the knife, feifei [sound of spitting], brilliant, sun rises in the east, turning back from shade to face the sun, Mr. Ge Mr. Ge, unknown whose master, you come without looking, leave without caring, offending living people, dust on the beam is the god of heaven, soil under the door is where ghosts pass, great knife ring rhino facing the stove lord, spit twice seven times, guest leaves child startled spit feifei]. Spit each time while pointing the knife at the infant. Repeat the chant three times to finish. Use the soybean pill similarly for five or six repetitions. Then break the pill to check if there is hair inside, and discard it on the road. Both human and horse Ke Wu will be cured.
The *Jianyao Jizhong Fang* treats infants suffering from Ma Du Ke Wu (Horse Poison Guest Worry) by burning horse tail hair in front of the infant, allowing the infant to inhale the smoke. Burn daily until recovered.
Another prescription: Take the saliva from the corner of the horse's mouth, apply it to the infant's mouth, which is effective.
