[Danbo Xuanning] Wind syndrome caused by smallpox should be differentiated into deficiency and excess of Qi and Blood, and treatment timing should be determined according to the days since onset; most cases involve insufficiency of Qi and Blood. If it is a deficiency pattern, use blood-nourishing agents such as Huangbai (Phellodendri Cortex) and Shengdi Huang (Rehmanniae Radix) to assist the healthy Qi, slightly supplemented with wind-dispersing herbs. If it is an excess pattern, Baishao (Paeoniae Radix Alba) and Huangqin (Scutellariae Radix) serve as the sovereign drugs, while Lianqiao (Forsythiae Fructus), Baizhi (Angelicae Dahuricae Radix), and Xuduan (Dipsaci Radix) serve as assistant drugs. If it belongs to a cold pattern, Chen's formula may be used.
[Xue Ji] Regarding the aforementioned conditions, one must further distinguish whether the smallpox lesions have erupted or not, and whether they have crusted over or not, as well as whether the cause is external pathogenic invasion or internal deficiency fire activation. If convulsions occur before eruption, it indicates internal accumulation of heat toxin; Zicao Kuaiban Tang (Purple Gromwell Decoction for Rapid Eruption) with Gouteng (Uncariae Ramulus cum Uncis) should be used. If convulsions occur after eruption when lesions are red and blooming, it indicates pain caused by heat toxin; Dongyuan Xiaodu San (Dongyuan's Toxin-Resolving Powder) with Gouteng should be used. If convulsions occur during the suppuration stage, it indicates deficiency of Qi and Blood; Shenqi Sisheng San (Ginseng and Atractylodes Four-Sage Powder) with Gouteng should be used. If convulsions persist after crusting, it indicates even greater deficiency of Qi and Blood; Bazhen Tang (Eight-Treasure Decoction) with Gouteng should be used. If eyes deviate or stare fixedly, it indicates fighting between wind and fire; Chaihu Zhizi San (Bupleurum and Gardenia Powder) or Liuwei Dihuang Wan (Six-Ingredient Rehmannia Pill) with Chaihu (Bupleuri Radix) and Shanzhi (Gardeniae Fructus) should be used. If drooling from the corner of the mouth occurs, it indicates Liver Wood overacting on Spleen Earth; Wuwei Yigong San (Five-Ingredient Extraordinary Merit Powder) with Shengma (Cimicifugae Rhizoma), Chaihu, and Gouteng should be used. If red eyes with discharge and tearing occur, it indicates wind generated from Liver Blood deficiency; Siwu Tang (Four-Agent Decoction) with Chaihu and Gouteng should be used. If opisthotonos occurs, it indicates Water failing to nourish Wood (Kidney Water failing to nourish Liver Wood); Liuwei Dihuang Wan with Chaihu and Danggui (Angelicae Sinensis Radix) should be used, followed by Buzhong Yiqi Tang (Tonify the Middle and Augment the Qi Decoction) with Tianma (Gastrodiae Rhizoma) and Gouteng as needed. Direct use of wind-dispersing medicines is contraindicated. This is because wind-dispersing herbs can dry the Blood and scatter Qi. One must verify the three signs of coldness, heat, and mildness in the hands and feet, and then apply tonification and purgation regulation methods to avoid errors. For infants, the nursing mother should also be examined and treated.
[Wan Quan] After smallpox, if the whole body suddenly turns bluish-black, accompanied by convulsions of the limbs, trismus (lockjaw), flooding of saliva, opisthotonos, and slurred speech, this is stroke syndrome. Just after the sores have healed, the Ying (Nutritive) and Wei (Defensive) Qi are weak. If precautions are ignored and one encounters seasonal qi transitions, evil qi from the eight directions enters due to deficiency, causing this condition. It is appropriate to use Xiaofeng San (Wind-Expelling Powder) 2 qian, mixed with 1 qian of Cicada Slough powder, divided into three doses. Administer with a few drops each of fresh ginger juice and mint juice, and soak in warm water. After two or three doses, urticaria may appear, or skin rashes may re-emerge, leading to recovery.
[Danbo Xuanning] Yang's daughter, aged over ten, had incomplete smallpox eruption. After crusting fell off, she experienced joint pain, poor appetite, and occasional night fevers. This indicates residual toxins remaining inside. The deficiency is severe, making dredging difficult; therefore, the treatment must combine tonification with unblocking. This formula governs this condition.
Herbs: Danggui (Angelicae Sinensis Radix), Baizhu (Atractylodis Macrocephalae Rhizoma), Chenpi (Citri Reticulatae Pericarpium) (each 1 qian), Niuxi (Achyranthis Bidentatae Radix) (5 fen), Tongcao (Tetrapanacis Medulla), Gancao Gen (Licorice Root) (roasted), Sugeng (Perilla Stem) (each 3 fen), Xijiao (Rhinoceros Horn) (2 fen).
Preparation: Coarsely crush the herbs. Decoct with 3 slices of fresh ginger, take warm.
A seven-year-old boy had incomplete initial eruption of smallpox. Toxic vapors attacked internally, causing joint pain and inability to straighten both legs. The scars lacked vibrant redness. The pulse was floating and harmonious, and urine was scanty and dark.
Herbs: Danggui Shen (Body of Angelicae Sinensis Radix), Baizhu (each 1 qian), Chenpi, Mutong (Akebiae Caulis), Xijiao Xie (Shavings of Rhinoceros Horn), Renshen (Ginseng Radix et Rhizoma), Fuling (Poria) (each 5 fen), Gancao (Licorice Root) (roasted, a small amount).
Preparation: Divide into two doses, decoct and take.
Xiaofeng San (Wind-Expelling Powder)

Preparation: Grind into powder. Take 2 qian per dose, mixed with clear tea liquor.
