The infant desires to nurse, but improper nursing conditions may lead to salivation, wheezing, and the generation of fright. (Sun Zhao stated: Nursing while angry causes Qi reversal and mania in the infant, also leading to phlegm accumulation with wheezing, or the onset of fright.) Nursing while angry leads to hernia and abdominal distension. (*Qianjin Yifang* states: Angry nursing causes hernia in the infant. Bian Que stated: In women [referring to the mother], it manifests as abdominal distension.) Cold milk results in undigested milk curds in stool. (*Shiji - Hua Tuo Lun* states: Milk with cold Qi and deficiency-cold causes green stools and crying. *Qianjin Yifang* states: It causes coughing in the infant.) Hot milk leads to a sallow complexion and anorexia. (*Qianjin Yifang* states: It causes vomiting. Zhang's theory states: Hot milk damages Lung Qi, leading to pigeon chest [carinatum sterni].) Qi-stagnated milk causes vomiting, diarrhea, and abdominal distension. (*Baojian* states: It leads to a yellowish-white complexion, reduced feeding, night crying, and milk stagnation.) Diseased milk can generate various diseases. (It causes jaundice and emaciation, bone-steaming tidal fever, night sweats, irritability, and night crying. Sun's theory states: Diseased milk leads to deficiency and emaciation and generates various diseases.) Stagnant milk causes vomiting, regurgitation, and phlegm production. (*Lingmi* states: Stagnant milk forms phlegm-saliva; excessive phlegm-saliva generates fright. *Baojian* states: Stagnant milk forms milk masses [nai pi] and causes vomiting with phlegm production.] Urgent milk leads to abdominal tension and coldness of the viscera. (*Baojian* states: Abdominal tension with diarrhea, heat in the chest and during movement, night crying, muscle emaciation, resembling accumulated masses.) Drunk milk causes mental confusion and frequent fright. (*Qianjin Yifang* states: It causes heat in the child and urgent abdominal pain. Bian Que stated: Nursing after drunken licentiousness causes mental confusion and frequent fright in the infant.) Licentious milk inevitably triggers fright and epilepsy. (*Baojian* states: When the mother is licentious and her emotions are chaotic while nursing, it causes vomiting, diarrhea, fever, and crow-like crying, which is difficult to treat.) For all the above types of milk, if one rushes to feed the infant, various diseases can arise; this must not be disregarded. Whenever the mother's Qi is disordered due to anger or joy and has not yet stabilized, nursing will result in vomiting, diarrhea, abdominal pain, malnutrition with jaundice, anorexia, and unresolved cold-heat stagnation. Nursing under these conditions leads to phlegm-masses, salivary cough, lung distension, and pigeon chest. Nursing while drunk, licentious, or panting frequently causes fright and epilepsy. *Shenghui Fang* states: Nursing while drunk, licentious, or panting can kill the infant. *Shengji Jing* discusses: Regarding nursing, summer milk should not be hot; if hot, it causes vomiting and regurgitation. Winter milk should not be cold; if cold, it causes dysentery. The mother should not be angry; anger causes Qi reversal and mania in the infant. The mother should not be drunk; drunkenness causes fever and abdominal fullness in the infant. If the mother nurses immediately after vomiting or purging, it leads to deficiency and emaciation. If the mother has accumulated heat and nurses, it transforms into jaundice and anorexia. If the mother nurses immediately after sexual intercourse, it leads to emaciation, frailty, and inability to walk due to weak calves. Generally speaking, inappropriate nursing and diet will generate disease.
