According to the *Shenghui Fang*: The so-called "Five-Color Dan" (Wu Se Dan) in infants is caused by the eruption of Dan toxin (Dan Du, a toxic heat rash), which changes color unpredictably, appearing green, yellow, white, black, or red. This occurs because the pathogenic heat of wind-toxin fluctuates in intensity, being either cold or hot, thus manifesting as Five-Color Dan.
The *Kong Family Tradition* records: Use Xiao Chai Hu Tang (Minor Bupleurum Decoction) prepared and administered according to standard methods. Apply the dregs of the decoction to the affected area; this is effective. Formula: Equal parts of Chuan Da Huang (Rhei Radix et Rhizoma), Chuan Mang Xiao (Natrii Sulfas), Zhi Zi Ren (Gardeniae Fructus), Huang Qin (Scutellariae Radix), Gan Lan Ye (Isatidis Folium Dry), and Shang Lu (Phytolaccae Radix). Grind into a fine powder, mix with water, and apply topically. Another method: Take four liang of Jiaoshugen (Ziziphus jujuba root bark), three liang of Danshen (Salviae Miltiorrhizae Radix), and one and a half liang of Juhua (Chrysanthemi Flos). Finely chop them. For every two liang, add five sheng of water and boil down to three sheng. Keep the infant away from wind and bathe him in water of appropriate temperature. Another method: Take one jin of Zhugenye (Boehmeriae Caudata leaf and root), and three he of Chixiaodou (Vigna angularis). Add five sheng of water, boil down to three sheng, and strain. Bathe the infant in warm liquid in a wind-free place. Another method: Take Qingliqiu with spines (Castanea mollissima fruit with spines), crush it, boil in water, and bathe the infant. Another method: Mix Puxi hui (Ash of rush mat) with Ji Bai (Albumen Ovi) and apply. Another method: Apply Niu Shi (Cow dung) to the lesion; change when dry. Another method: Apply rotten mud from under the pig trough; change when dry. Another method: Bind the skull of a sow and have the infant sleep on it as a pillow.
Regarding Bai Dan (White Dan): It is caused by the invasion of wind-cold qi, resulting in a white complexion. Initially, it presents with itching and pain, slight edema resembling raised wheals (like blown milk), without pain or redness, appearing only white.
Treatment: Take Suanmucao and Wuyecao (five-leaf herb), each five liang, extract juice, and apply. Alternatively, grind Chuan Da Huang (Rhei Radix et Rhizoma) into powder, mix with natural juice of Machixian (Portulacae Herba), and apply. Alternatively, crush Liaoye (Polygoni Herba) thoroughly and apply. Alternatively, crush Lanxiangye (Perillae Folium) thoroughly and apply. Alternatively, mix Cu (Vinegar) with Liangshangchen (dust from roof beams) and apply. Alternatively, mix Zhizhi (Pig fat) with Luji hui (Ash of deer horn) and apply. Alternatively, burn Zhu Fen (Pig feces) to ash, mix with Jizi Bai (Albumen Ovi), and apply.
Zhang Huan's Xiang Chi San: Treats Bai Dan accompanied by Zhutong (lingering pain/infection) and edema resembling raised wheals.
Ingredients: Xiang Chi (Fermented Soybean Preparatum, two liang, stir-fried until charred), Fulonggan (Fulguris Argillae, one liang).
Preparation: Grind into powder. Mix with raw oil and apply topically.
The *Shenghui Fang* also states: The so-called "White Rash" (Bai Zhen) is caused by wind qi stagnating within the muscles, clashing with wind pathogens, thereby forming rashes. The condition worsens in cold weather or windy conditions, but improves in sunny warmth or when the body is warm. This formula is suitable.
Ingredient: Zhishi (Aurantii Fructus Immaturus, chopped).
Usage: Boil in water, take the juice, and wash/wipe the Dan lesion.
To treat pediatric wind-heat toxic swelling presenting as white, or associated with E He Luo Li (malignant nodules and scrofula), Fu Gu Yong Ju (deep-seated abscesses), joint immobility, Bai Dan spreading over the whole body, and persistent itching of Bai Zhen. Use Wu Xiang Lian Qiao Tang (Five-Aromatic Forsythia Decoction).
Ingredients: Qingmuxiang (Aucklandiae Radix), Xunluxiang (Olibanum), Jitixiang (Caryophylli Flos), Chenxiang (Aquilariae Lignum Resinatum), Mahuang (Ephedrae Herba), Huang Qin (Scutellariae Radix) (each 1 fen); Dahuang (Rhei Radix et Rhizoma, 8 fen); Shexiang (Moschus, 0.5 fen); Lianqiao (Forsythiae Fructus), Haizao (Sargassum), Shegan (Belamcandae Rhizoma), Shengma (Cimicifugae Rhizoma), Zhishi (Aurantii Fructus Immaturus) (each 2 fen); Zhuli (Bambusae Succus, 3 he).
Usage: Add four sheng of water, boil the herbs until half remains, add Zhuli (Bambusae Succus), and boil to obtain one sheng and two he. For infants aged 100 to 200 days, administer two he per dose. For infants older than 200 days up to [age missing in text], administer five he per dose.
The *Waitai Beiji Fang* treats Bai Dan.
Ingredients: Zhugen (Boehmeriae Radix, three jin), Xiaodou (Vigna angularis, four sheng).
Usage: Boil in two dou of water. Bathe the infant three to four times daily. (Also effective for all types of Dan toxins.)
