The song in "Xing Zheng Lun" states: Dysentery with five colors has the most diverse causes; seeing this symptom indicates there are five distinct types. Green color is solely due to fright accumulation (Jing Ji Ju); yellow is mostly food stagnation within the Spleen; white is caused by cold deficiency affecting the intestines and stomach; red is due to accumulated heat, making it difficult to stabilize; chicken liver color (purple-black) implies hidden accumulation often forming clumps; black blood mixed with stasis is also hard to settle. If accompanied by lip twitching, chest distension, exposed teeth, facial redness, and visible meridians, these usually appear at the beginning of the disease. Urgently soothe the Zang-Fu organs and administer He Tang San (Harmonizing Decoction); physicians should pay attention to the methods of ancient sages.
Another song states: Do not consider dysentery with five colors strange; it begins to occur in children before four years old. Green is solely due to fright accumulation; yellow is due to food stagnation toxins in the Spleen; red and black indicate Heart and Kidney pathology; white is mostly harm to the Spleen. Before the age of twenty-one (3x7), there is no change; do not allow excessive sleep, and delay feeding and drinking. For this disease, one must harmonize the Five Zang organs and tonify Ying and Wei (Nutritive and Defensive Qi) for gradual recovery. If eyes are swollen and appetite is lost (Yang considers this a bad omen), only administer Tiao Wei San (Stomach-Regulating Powder) to tonify.
