According to the *Shenghui Fang* (Prescriptions from the Holy Benefit Hall): The symptoms include itching and pain in the lips and mouth, teeth becoming black and brittle, sores on the tongue, a sensation of dryness and heat in the head, redness and ulceration of the gingiva, swelling of the cheeks with toothache. This is caused by the steaming effect of heat-toxin, resulting in foul breath.
Commentary: This refers to the mild and slow-progressing form of Zouma Gan (a rapidly developing and corrosive oral disease). The description in the *Shenghui Fang* seems somewhat exaggerated. The treatment method should involve internal administration of Qingwei San (Stomach-Clearing Powder) or Ganlu Yin (Sweet Dew Decoction), and external application of equal parts of Wu Bei Zi (Galla Chinensis, stir-fried until black), Lv Fan (Green Vitriol, heated until red-hot), and Ren Zhong Bai (Calcinata Urinae Humanae). Add a small amount of rice flakes, grind together, and use to rub the teeth. Alternatively, adding Bin Lang Fen (Areca Seed Powder) to kill parasites is also effective.
*Tan Shi Shu Sheng* (Miraculous Sages Discussed by Tan) prescription for treating various malignant sores of Gan disease in children and adults:
Huang Dan (Lead Oxide, refined via sublimation) 1 qian, Ru Xiang (Boswelliae Resina) 1 qian, Bai Fan (Alumen, refined) 1 qian, Pi Zi Yan Zhi (Raw Rouge) 1 qian, Qing Fen (Calomel) a little, She Xiang (Moschus) a little.
Grind all ingredients into a fine powder. Adjust dosage according to whether the patient is an adult or child. First wash the sore clean with Jiang Shui (fermented grain water), then apply the medicine as a dry powder (gan chan).
Ju Bao Fang (Treasure Gathering Formulas) Huang Fan San (Yellow Alum Powder) for treating receding gums exposing roots in adults and children, Gu Cao Feng (alveolar osteomyelitis), acute Gan disease in children causing gingival ulceration, and malignant swelling and pain.
Huang Fan (Yellow Alum, 1 liang, ground and placed in a gan pot, heated until red-hot) 1 liang, Sheng Gan Di Huang (Rehmanniae Radix Preparata, dried raw) 0.5 liang, Wu Tong Lv (Cortex Firmiana) 0.5 liang, Chuan Sheng Ma (Bupleuri Radix) 0.5 liang, Gan Xia Ma Tou (Dried Toad Head, roasted until scorched) 2 pieces.
Grind the above five herbs into a powder. Apply half a qian of the powder directly to the affected area. After some time, expectorate saliva, rinse mouth with Gan Cao (Licorice Root) water. One or two applications yield immediate results. Another version uses Shu Gan Di Huang (Rehmanniae Radix Preparata, cooked) and ash from roasted toad heads.
Liu Shi Jia Chuan Fang (Family-Transmitted Formula of the Liu Family) for treating oral Gan sores in children, attributing them to parasites in the lower body. Smoke the area with smoke generated from burning Da Ma Zi (Cannabis Fructus).
Zhuang Shi Jia Chuan (Family Tradition of Zhuang) prescription for treating necrotic and ulcerative dental Gan in children:
Bai Yao Jian (Myrobalan Ferment) equal part, Pi Zi Yan Zhi (Raw Rouge) equal part.
Grind both into a fine powder and sieve. Apply to the affected site.
Wu Shi Jia Chuan (Family Tradition of Wu) Qing Xia San (Blue Clouds Powder) for treating oral and dental Gan in children.
Xia Ma (Toad, one piece, calcined to ash) 1 fen, Zhi Gan Cao (Roasted Glycyrrhizae Radix et Rhizoma) 1 fen, Qing Dai (Indici Folium) 1 fen.
Grind into a fine powder, adding a small amount of Zhen She Xiang (Moschus). If the child has widespread oral ulcers with foul odor and rotting leading to tooth loss, sweep the powder onto the lesions using a chicken feather for immediate effect.
Before use, rinse the mouth with salt water and dry thoroughly before application.
Master An’s transmitted prescription for treating oral, dental, and pharyngeal Gan sores appearing like white membranes in children:
Use equal parts of Qing Fen (Calomel) and Huang Dan (Lead Oxide). Mix with milk and apply to the sores. The lesion will peel off immediately like a shell.
Prescription for treating Gan erosion affecting lips and teeth and generating sores in children:
Chan Tou (Toad Head, one large piece, calcined to ash) 1 piece, She Xiang (Moschus) 0.5 qian.
Grind evenly into a powder. Sprinkle onto the sores for immediate effect.
Prescription for treating receding gums exposing roots, and foul-smelling, rotting sores on the lips, mouth, and tooth roots in children:
Chao Ting Li (Semen Lepidii seu Descurainiae, stir-fried) 2 qian, Hu Huang Lian (Picrorhizae Rhizoma) 2 qian, Huang Dan (Lead Oxide) 0.5 liang.
Grind into a powder. Apply half a qian to the gums each time. Ensure the patient does not swallow saliva. (This formula is used in Zhuang's Twelfth Manifestation).
Secret Prescription for treating necrotic dental Gan and Chancre (Xia Gan):
Hai Ba (Sea Bean, two white ones, one red one) 2 white + 1 red, Yin Zhu (Vermilion) 0.5 qian, Qing Fen (Calomel) 0.5 qian, Hai Piao Xiao (Sepiae Endoconcha) 1 fen, Zhen Zhu (Margarita) 2 fen, Long Gu (Fossilia Ossis Mastodi) 2 fen.
Grind all into a fine powder. Rinse mouth with cold tea, then apply the medication.
