Luo Qianfu treated the four-year-old son of Wei Jingfu. Following a senior monk's head-touching initiation ritual where monks chanted spells, the child suffered extreme fright, leading to Jingchu (startling convulsions), phlegm-fluid obstruction, excessive white sclera exposure, stiffness and tension in the neck and back, sounds in the throat, and only regaining consciousness after about an hour. Subsequently, seeing people in black clothes would trigger attacks. Having taken many sedative and heavy-settling drugs such as Zhusha (Cinnabar), Xijiao (Rhinoceros Horn - note: substitute with Buffalo Horn in modern practice), Longgu (Fossilized Bone), and Shexiang (Musk), the symptoms persisted after forty days, accompanied by erratic movements and mental dullness resembling dementia.
I palpated his pulse: deep, wiry, and rapid. The Huangdi Zhenjing (Yellow Emperor's Classic of Acupuncture) states: "When the Heart pulse is full and large, epilepsy and tendon spasms occur." It also says: "When the Liver pulse is small and urgent, epilepsy and tendon spasms occur." Generally, children's blood and qi are undetermined, and their Shen (Spirit) is weak. Due to fright, the Shen has no foundation, and the Liver is disturbed. Since the Liver governs tendons, epilepsy and tendon spasms result. Prolonged illness leads to Qi deficiency; children are prone to both deficiency and excess syndromes. Frequent use of sedative, cold, and cooling agents further damages Qi, causing the added symptom of movement resembling dementia. The Neijing states: "Sudden spasms, epilepsy, and dizziness, inability of the feet to support the body, treat by selecting Tianzhu (BL10)." Tianzhu is an exit point of the Foot-Taiyang channel, where the Yang Qiao vessel attaches and travels. It also states: "For epilepsy and convulsions where the suffering is unknown, the two Qiao vessels govern it; male corresponds to Yang, female to Yin." Jiegau states: "Daytime onset treats Yang Qiao Shenmai (BL62); nighttime onset treats Yin Qiao Zhaohai (KI6). First, moxa both Qiao vessels for fourteen burns each, then treat with Chenxiang Tianma Tang."
Chenxiang (Aquilaria Wood) Yizhi (Alpinia Oxyphylla Fruit) Chuanwu (Processed Ligusticum Chuanxiong Rhizoma, skin and umbilicus removed. Three qian each) Qianghuo (Notopterygium Rhizoma, five qian) Gancao (Prepared Licorice Root) Danggui (Angelicae Sinensis Radix) Jiangxie (Fresh Ginger Scrapings. One qian and a half each) Duhuo (Angelica Pubescens Root, four qian)
Cut into pieces. Take five qian per dose, with three slices of fresh ginger, decoct in water, take warm. The Jutong Lun states: "Fear causes Qi to sink, essence becomes timid, and the Upper Jiao closes." It also states: "For pathogens rising from below, guide them downward." Using Qianghuo and Duhuo, which are bitter and warm, with thin flavors, representing Yang within Yin, they guide Qi upward and enter the Taiyang channel as guiding herbs, thus serving as the Sovereign herb. Tianma and Fangfeng, pungent and warm, disperse pathogenic factors; Danggui and Gancao, pungent, sweet, and warm, tonify insufficiency of Qi and Blood and nourish Stomach Qi, thus serving as Ministers. Hei Fuzi (Black Aconite), Chuan Wutou, and Yizhiren, greatly pungent and warm, promote Yang and dispel Yin, treating Cold invading and injuring the Stomach. The Kidney governs the Five Fluids; entering the Spleen, it transforms into Phlegm-fluid. Fresh Ginger and Banxia dry dampness and transform phlegm. The Shiji states: "Heaviness can remove timidity." Chenxiang is pungent and warm, heavy in substance and clear in Qi, removing timidity and calming the Spirit, thus serving as an Envoy. The combination of flavors and aromas raises Yang and tonifies the Stomach; the Qi of fear and timidity naturally becomes balanced.

Mahuang (Ephedra Herba, roots removed, two liang), wine (one sheng), boil Mahuang in wine until reduced to one sheng, remove Mahuang, use only the wine, simmer the medicine appropriately without burning to redness. Workers quickly form pills size like Chinese Quince seeds, store in sealed containers. One pill divided into five doses, grind with decoction of Jin Yin Hua (Honeysuckle Flower) and Bohe (Mint), dissolve and take. Greatly disperses fright pathogens.
