Haizang stated: Night fever belongs to the Yin category; formulas such as Sishun Yin (Four-Obedience Decoction) can be used, which indicates blood heat manifesting at night. The *Mai Jing* (Pulse Classic) states: When there is retained food in the Small Intestine, fever often occurs in the evening and subsides by tomorrow morning. This is night fever caused by retained food. [Xue Ji] treated a child who developed fever during the Hai and Zi hours (9 PM to 1 AM), presenting with fatigue in form and Qi, yellow complexion, reluctance to eat, drooling, and a desire to drink hot liquids. The condition was cured using Yihuang San (Golden Yellow Powder). Later, the fever recurred; after taking the previous medicine and heat-clearing agents, the onset became irregular, accompanied by lethargy with eyes half-open, thirst, poor appetite, and frequent loose stools of yellow color. This indicated Spleen deficiency with Liver Wood overacting, combined with sinking of Yuan Qi (Original Qi). It was cured using Buzhong Yiqi Tang (Tonify the Middle and Augment the Qi Decoction), assisted by Dihuang Wan (Rehmannia Pill). He also treated another child with night fever and abdominal distension, diagnosed as Spleen deficiency and Liver excess. In the morning, Wuyi Yigong San (Five-Ingredient Extraordinary Efficacy Powder) was administered, and in the evening, Siwei Fei'er Wan (Four-Ingredient Fattening Child Pill); once the fever ceased, the regimen changed to Liuwei Dihuang Wan (Six-Ingredient Rehmannia Pill) in the morning and Yigong San in the evening, leading to recovery. [Qian Yi] The son of Supervisor Zhu, aged five, had night fever that resolved upon dawn. Many physicians treated it as Taiyang disease or Heat syndrome; cooling herbs failed to resolve it. The symptoms included excessive salivation and drowsiness. Other physicians used Tifen Wan (Iron Powder Pill) to reduce phlegm-saliva, but the condition worsened. By the fifth day, the child exhibited extreme thirst and drinking. Qian Yi said purgation was contraindicated. He took Baizhu San (Atractylodes Macrocephala Powder), one tael, decocted it into three sheng of liquid, allowing the child to drink as much as desired. Mr. Zhu asked, "Will drinking too much cause diarrhea?" Qian Yi replied, "Without raw water, diarrhea will not occur. Even if he drinks a lot, it is not surprising; the key is to avoid purgation." Mr. Zhu asked, "Which disease should be treated first?" Qian Yi answered, "Stopping diarrhea, treating phlegm, reducing fever, and clearing the spirit are all addressed by this medicine." By evening, after finishing the dose, Qian Yi observed and said another three sheng could be taken. Another three sheng of Baizhu San were decocted and consumed, resulting in slight improvement. On the third day, another three sheng of Baizhu San were given; the child no longer felt thirsty nor had phlegm-saliva. Two doses of Ejiao San (Donkey-Hide Gelatin Powder) were then administered, bringing stability. [Tang] Wind-phlegm Heat syndrome presents with evening fever and morning coolness, with constant desire for water. This pattern arises from phlegm transforming into tidal waves generating wind-heat. Jinxing Wan (Venus Star Pill) should be used immediately for purgation. If Qi is weak, purgation is contraindicated; Duoming San (Life-Restoring Powder) should be used to control and expel phlegm-saliva, followed by Xingxing San (Awakening Powder) with Tianxing (Arisaema Cum Bile) and Baifuzi (Typhonii Rhizoma).
