Qian Yi discussed night crying, stating: "It is pain caused by cold in the Spleen Zang. One should administer warming middle-jiao herbs and use ritual methods to exorcise evil spirits; Huohuo Gao (Flower Fire Paste) is indicated."
Huohuo Gao (Flower Fire Paste): Take one lamp wick, apply it to the nipple or milk, and let the infant suckle it.
[Qian's Formula] Danggui Wan (Angelica Sinensis Pill): For infants who cry at night, this indicates cold in the internal organs causing abdominal pain. The presentation includes a cyan complexion, cold hands and feet, and refusal to suckle milk. This formula is appropriate.
Ingredients: Danggui (Radix Angelicae Sinensis), Baishao Yao (Radix Paeoniae Alba), Renshen (Radix Ginseng) [each 1 fen], Gancao (Radix Glycyrrhizae Preparata with honey) [0.5 fen], Jiegeng (Radix Platycodi), Chenjupi (Pericarpium Citri Reticulatae without white pith) [each 1 qian].
Preparation: Grind all ingredients into a fine powder. Decoct half a qian of the powder in water, and administer small amounts frequently.
Note: If the crying is due to heat-pain, resulting in incessant crying, red face upon nocturnal onset, dry lips, and yellow-red urine, administer Sanhuang Wan (Three-Yellow Pill) washed down with Renshen Tang (Ginseng Decoction). (See Sanhuang Wan formula under Excess-Heat conditions.)
[Zhang Huan's Formula] Wanjing San (Myriad-Gold Powder): Treats infant organ-cold, weak congenital qi, wide fontanelles, cyan-white complexion, and excessive night crying. Severe cases present with irritability and restlessness, resembling possession by spirits. This may also result from violating taboos. This condition is named Night Crying, and this formula is indicated.
Ingredients: Chenxiang (Lignum Aquilariae Resinatum, sliced), Dingxiang (Flos Caryophylli), Renshen (Radix Ginseng), Wuweizi (Fructus Schisandrae Chinensis), Danggui (Radix Angelicae Sinensis) [each 1 liang], Chishaoyao (Radix Paeoniae Rubra), Baizhu (Rhizoma Atractylodis Macrocephalae) [each 0.5 liang], Guixin (Cortex Cinnamomi) [1 fen].
Preparation: Crush and sieve the ingredients into a fine powder. Administer 1 qian per dose. Mix with a small cup of warm, light fermented rice water, decoct until reduced to 0.5 cup volume, allow to cool to warm temperature, and drip into the infant's mouth occasionally. Immediate effect is expected.
[Tian's Formula] Wuweizi San (Schisandra Powder): Treats infant night crying and abdominal pain, which worsens at night, resembling spirit possession.
Ingredients: Wuweizi (Fructus Schisandrae Chinensis), Danggui (Radix Angelicae Sinensis), Chishaoyao (Radix Paeoniae Rubra), Baizhu (Rhizoma Atractylodis Macrocephalae) [each 0.5 liang], Fushen (Poria Cum Radix Pini), Chenpi (Pericarpium Citri Reticulatae), Guixin (Cortex Cinnamomi), Gancao (Radix Glycyrrhizae Preparata with honey) [each 2.5 qian].
Preparation: Grind into a coarse powder. Decoct in water. Adjust dosage according to the infant's size.
Diaoteng Gao (Uncaria Paste): Treats infants within 100 days presenting with cyan complexion, abdominal pain, and night crying; and for infants over one year old, treats various hernia diseases such as Panchang Neidiao (Intestinal Coiling Upward).
Ingredients: Diaoteng (Ramulus Uncariae cum Uncis, with hooks), Xiansu (Rhizoma Corydalis Yanhusuo), Danggui (Radix Angelicae Sinensis, wine-washed), Fencacao (Radix Glycyrrhizae Preparata with honey), Ruxiang (Resina Olibani) [each 5 qian], Rougui (Cortex Cinnamomi Cassiae, bark removed) [2 qian], Shexiang (Moschus) [1 zi].
Preparation: Dry-bake the first four ingredients. Do not over-roast the Rougui. Grind them together into a fine powder. Wrap Ruxiang in leaves and heat thoroughly using an iron heated on a fire. Once cooled, grind finely with Shexiang in a mortar. Then add the previous powder and mix uniformly. Form pills using refined honey, sized like Euryale seeds. Administer 1 to 2 pills per dose, dissolved in warm water on an empty stomach.
Diaoteng Yin (Uncaria Drink): Treats infant night crying caused by cold in the viscera. Yin qi dominates at night, activating cold; extreme cold generates agitation (Yin extreme produces Yang-like restlessness), and cold excess causes pain, leading to incessant night crying. Diaoteng San (Uncaria Powder) is indicated. For fright-induced crying, add Chanui (Periostracum Cicadae), Fangfeng (Radix Saposhnikoviae), and Tianma (Rhizoma Gastrodiae).
Ingredients: Diaotenggou (Ramulus Uncariae cum Uncis), Fushen (Poria Cum Radix Pini), Fuling (Poria), Chuanxiong (Rhizoma Chuanxiong), Danggui (Radix Angelicae Sinensis), Muxiang (Radix Aucklandiae), Gancao (Radix Glycyrrhizae), Baishao Yao (Radix Paeoniae Alba) [each 1 qian].
Preparation: Grind into powder. Administer 1 qian per dose, decocted briefly with fresh ginger and jujube.
Modification: If there is Heart-heat causing irritability, with symptoms of red face, white tongue coating, and dark, scanty urination, remove Muxiang from Diaoteng Yin. Add 1 qian of Zhusha Mo (Cinnabar Powder), mix well, and administer 1 qian per dose, taken with Mutong Tang (Akebia Decoction). Alternatively, the powder can be decocted directly.
[Shenghui] Runtou San (Nipple Powder): Treats incessant infant night crying and abdominal pain.
Ingredients: Huangqi (Radix Astragali Membranacei, sliced), Gancao (Radix Glycyrrhizae Preparata with honey), Danggui (Radix Angelicae Sinensis), Chishaoyao (Radix Paeoniae Rubra), Muxiang (Radix Aucklandiae).
Preparation: Use equal parts. Grind finely and sieve into a powder. Apply a small amount to the nipple so that the infant ingests it while suckling.
Suanru Wan (Garlic Milk Pill): Treats abdominal pain and night crying. (See formula under Abdominal Pain section.)
