San Sheng Wan (Three Sages Pill): Treats various types of malaria, regardless of duration.
Squama Manis (Pangolin Scale) (soaked in hot water until soft, scales removed, crushed, and slow-roasted over low heat with hot ashes until scorched yellow) Radix Dichroae (Chigan Changshan) Areca Semen (Jixin Binglang) (the latter two each 1 liang, thinly sliced and sun-dried).
The above ingredients are sun-dried again, ground into fine powder, mixed with a paste made from boiling glutinous rice flour to form pills the size of mung beans. While still moist, coat them with Zhusha (Cinnabar), and dry in the shade.
Take 30 to 50 pills per dose. Administer one dose on an empty stomach with wine the night before the expected onset (skipping one day prior). For severe cases, take two doses. If the condition persists despite long-term treatment, switch to Qu Nie Dan.
Er Xian Yin (Two Immortals Decoction): Indications same as above.
Qinghao (Artemisiae Annuae Herba) (stems removed, harvested on the fifth day of the fifth lunar month, sun-dried, 2 liang) Guizhi (Ramulus Cinnamomi) (bark removed, 0.5 liang; both herbs chopped, roasted, and ground into fine powder).
Take 1 qian per dose. Mix with cool wine and administer before the onset of chills and fever, or alternatively, administer with wine the night before (skipping one day). Add Xiangru Ye (Elsholtziae Herba, 2 liang) and Hao Cha Ya (Good Tea Buds, 0.5 liang), grind together into powder. This is also known as Zhan Xie Yin (Evil-Slaying Drink). Indications and methods are the same; it is particularly effective for treating Summerheat Malaria. Administration method is the same as above.
Qu Nie Dan (Malaria-Expelling Pill): Treats malaria that has persisted for a long time without resolution.
Changshan (Radix Dichroae, finely chopped, 2 liang) Wumei (Fructus Mume, with seeds, 1 liang, thinly sliced) Hongdan (Zhusha/Cinnabar, high quality, 0.5 liang).
Process the ingredients: roast the Wumei separately on roof tiles. The Changshan may be sun-dried or roasted. Grind all three (Changshan, Wumei, Hongdan) into a fine powder. Use boiled glutinous rice flour paste as a binder to form pills the size of hemp seeds. Take 30 to 50 pills per dose. Administer on an empty stomach with cool wine before the onset, or with wine the night before (skipping one day). Severe cases: two doses; mild cases: one dose. Avoid chicken, wheat products, mutton, cold/raw foods and beverages, and toxic substances.
