According to the *Shenghui Fang*, excessive salivation in children is caused by wind-heat obstructing the spleen, accumulating into saliva, which prevents food and milk from going down. The saliva becomes solidified, leading to high fever. Excessive salivation in children arises from insufficient spleen qi, which fails to distribute body fluids throughout the body. If the root cause is not treated by strengthening middle qi, and only phlegm-saliva is removed, although phlegm-saliva is a pathological product, it is also attached to primordial qi. Continuous removal will eventually lead to deficiency collapse. I have witnessed cases of convulsions, fright, and high fever where doctors used purgatives to resolve phlegm; initially showing little effect, repeated use of purgatives led to premature death on many occasions. Qian Yi once treated the five-year-old son of Supervisor Zhu, who had fever at night but recovered by morning. A doctor administered Tie Fen Wan (Iron Powder Pill) to purge phlegm-saliva, but the condition worsened. By the fifth day, the child drank excessively. Qian Yi prescribed Bai Zhu San (Atractylodes Macrocephala Powder) for measles-related thirst, one liang, decocted in three sheng, allowing the child to drink as desired. Mr. Zhu suspected it might cause diarrhea. Qian Yi said, "Do not be surprised even if there is diarrhea, but do not use purgatives!" This medicine stops diarrhea, resolves phlegm, reduces fever, and clears the spirit. After taking another three sheng, slightly finishing the dose, the child recovered. On the third day, another three sheng were taken; thirst ceased and no more saliva was produced. Two doses of E Jiao San (Donkey-hide Gelatin Powder) for wheezing and cough were then administered, stabilizing the condition.
