This condition is named "Ru Sou" (Infant Cough), which is actually difficult to regulate and is also considered a malignant syndrome. Treatment should be administered based on an assessment of deficiency or excess: for excess conditions, disperse them; for deficiency conditions, tonify them.
If the symptoms manifest as coarse breathing with abundant phlegm, mouth ulcers, and hot eyes, after dispersing treatment, a purgative method can be used, primarily with medicines such as Bijin Wan (Jinjin Wan) (indicating treatment for fright and epilepsy) to dissipate the excess pathogenic factors. If the symptoms manifest as vomiting, fright and palpitations after coughing, fatigue, and spontaneous sweating, Bufeisan (Tonify Lung Powder), Yihuang San (Yellow Protecting Powder), and Tianma San (Gastrodia Powder) should be used to tonify the deficiency.
Generally speaking, for treating Fright Cough, Hupo San (Amber Powder) is the primary formula. Tianma Wan (Gastrodia Pill) is an essential medicine, composed of Gastrodiae Rhizoma (Tianma), Bombyx Batryticatus (Chantui), Bombyx Batryticatus (Jiangcan), Ginseng Radix et Rhizoma (Renshen), Chuanxiong Rhizoma (Chuanxiong), Glycyrrhizae Radix et Rhizoma (Gancao), Borax (Pengsha), Tianshu Huang (Tianzhuhuang), Arisaema Cum Bile (Dan Zhi Nanning), Typhonii Rhizoma (Baifuzi), Pi (Huai), Realgar (Xionghuang), and Folium Aurum (Jinbo Mo). It is processed with refined honey into pills the size of a chicken head, coated with gold leaf powder. Each dose consists of one pill, dissolved and taken with Mint Decoction (Bohe Tang). It treats infants under one hundred days old who suffer from persistent coughing, and its efficacy far surpasses other medicines.
[Zeng] For infants within one hundred days who occasionally experience coughing with phlegm obstruction and restlessness during sleep, this is also caused by contracting wind after birth. However, dispersing agents should not be overused. First, administer Jiebiaosan (Release Exterior Powder) (see previous text) for one or two doses, followed by Beimu Tang (Fritillaria Decoction) and Xingxing San (Xingxing Powder) for treatment.
[Xue] If there is internal heat in the Spleen and Stomach, Baolong Wan (Embrace Dragon Pill) (indicating treatment for fright) is used. If there is external contraction of Wind Pathogen, Xingxing San (Xingxing Powder) (indicating treatment for early stage of measles/rubella fever) is used. Once the Phlegm-Heat has been eliminated, but coarse breathing with abundant phlegm or drooling persists, it indicates Qi Deficiency of the Spleen and Lungs; Yigong San (Yigong Powder) (indicating treatment for vomiting and diarrhea) with added Platycodonis Radix (Jiegeng) is used. If there are mouth ulcers, hot eyes, and firm stools, Sanhuang Wan (Three Yellow Pill) (indicating treatment for interior heat) is used. If stools are loose, Baizhu San (Atractylodes Macrocephala Powder) (indicating treatment for thirst) is used. If there is vomiting, refusal to nurse, fatigue, spontaneous sweating, or spontaneous diarrhea with abdominal distension, it indicates Qi Deficiency of the Spleen and Stomach; Liu Junzi Tang (Six Gentlemen Decoction) (indicating treatment for vomiting and diarrhea) with added Bupleuri Radix (Chaihu) is used. If there are fright, palpitations, fatigue, abundant phlegm, and refusal to nurse, it indicates Blood Deficiency of the Heart and Spleen; Sijunzi Tang (Four Gentlemen Decoction) (indicating treatment for vomiting and diarrhea) with added Chuanxiong Rhizoma (Chuanxiong), Angelicae Sinensis Radix (Guib), and Ziziphi Spinosae Semen (Suanzaoren) is used. If the illness is caused by the nursing mother consuming pungent spices and rich flavors, affecting the infant, reference should still be made to various syndromes of wheezing and coughing.
