巢氏云，手太阳之经入于耳内，头脑有风，入乘其脉，与气相搏，故令耳聋。
《圣惠》治小儿风热两耳聋鸣方
远志（去心） 甘草（炙微赤，锉） 柴胡（去苗） 菖蒲（各一分） 磁石（三分，捣碎，水淘去赤汁）
麦门冬（去心，焙半两）
上捣，细罗为散。每服，以葱白汤调下半钱，日二服，量儿大小，以意加减。
〔张涣〕通鸣散 治耳聋。
菖蒲（一寸九节者） 远志（去心。各一两） 柴胡（去苗） 麦门冬（去心） 防风（各半两） 细辛 甜葶
苈（各一分） 以上捣罗，并为细末，次入磁石（一分，捣碎，水淘去赤汁） 杏仁（二七个，汤浸，去皮尖，研）
上件，都研匀。每服半钱，煎葱白汤调下，日二，乳后。
《圣惠》细辛膏 治小儿耳聋，或因脑热，或因水入，或因吹着，并宜用此。
细辛 防风（去芦头） 川大黄（锉，微炒） 黄芩（各一分） 川椒（去目，十粒） 蜡（半两）
上件药，细锉，用清麻油三合，煎药紫色，滤过，下蜡候消为膏。每日三度，
用一大豆大，点于耳中。
《圣惠》治小儿耳聋不瘥方
甜葶苈 杏仁（汤浸，去皮） 盐（各等分）
上件药捣，研如膏，以少许猪脂和合，煎令稠，以绵裹如蕤核大，塞耳中，日一易之。
又方
松脂 菖蒲（末） 乌油麻（各半两）
上件药相和捣熟，绵裹如一红豆大，塞耳，日一易。
又方
菖蒲（末一分） 杏仁（汤浸，去皮尖，研如泥，半两）
上相和研令乳入，每用少许，绵裹内耳中，日一易。
又方
上取葱白于 灰中煨令熟，以葱白头纳耳中，日三易。
又方
蓖麻子（去皮十枚） 枣肉（七枚）同捣如膏。每取蕤核大，绵裹少许，塞耳中，日一易。
又方
上，捣芥子令烂，以人乳和。绵裹少许，塞耳中，日一易之。
麝香散 治沉耳。
麝香（少许） 白矾（一钱，火 ） 五倍子（二钱）
上件，为末。纸捻子点入耳中少许。
Chao Yuanfang stated that the Hand-Taiyang meridian enters the interior of the ear. If wind pathogens invade the head and brain, they penetrate the meridians and contend with healthy Qi, thereby causing deafness.
*Taiping Shenghui Fang* (Prescriptions from the Holy Welfare Bureau) formula for treating pediatric deafness and tinnitus due to Wind-Heat:
Polygalae Radix (Yuanzhi, 远志) [decored], Glycyrrhizae Radix et Rhizoma (Gancao, 甘草) [roasted until slightly red, sliced], Bupleuri Radix (Chaihu, 柴胡) [deprived of sprouts], Acori Tatarinowii Rhizome (Shichangpu, 石菖蒲) [each 1 fen], Magnetitum (Cishi, 磁石) [3 fen, crushed, washed with water to remove red juice], Ophiopogonis Radix (Maidong, 麦门冬) [decored, baked, half liang].
Crush the above herbs, sift through a fine sieve to make a powder. Take half a qian per dose, mixed with decoction of white parts of Allium fistulosum (Congbai, 葱白), twice daily. Adjust dosage according to the child's age and condition.
[Tongming San] by Zhang Huan, for treating deafness.
Acori Tatarinowii Rhizome (Shichangpu, 石菖蒲) [one cun long with nine nodes], Polygalae Radix (Yuanzhi, 远志) [decored, each 1 liang], Bupleuri Radix (Chaihu, 柴胡) [deprived of sprouts], Ophiopogonis Radix (Maidong, 麦门冬) [decored], Saposhnikoviae Radix (Fangfeng, 防风) [each half liang], Asari Radix et Rhizoma (Xixin, 细辛), Descurainiae Semen Lepidii Semperorientis (Tinglizi, 甜葶苈) [each 1 fen]. The above are crushed and sieved into fine powder. Then add Magnetitum (Cishi, 磁石) [1 fen, crushed, washed with water to remove red juice] and Armeniacae Semen Amarum (Xingren, 杏仁) [27 seeds, soaked in hot water, skin and tip removed, ground].
Grind all ingredients uniformly. Take half a qian per dose, mixed with decoction of white parts of Allium fistulosum (Congbai, 葱白), twice daily, after breastfeeding.
*Xixin Gao* (Asari Ointment) from *Taiping Shenghui Fang*, for treating pediatric deafness caused by brain heat, water entering the ear, or blowing air into the ear.
Asari Radix et Rhizoma (Xixin, 细辛), Saposhnikoviae Radix (Fangfeng, 防风) [deprived of rhizome head], Rheum Palmatum (Dahuang, 川大黄) [sliced, slightly fried], Scutellariae Radix (Huangqin, 黄芩) [each 1 fen], Zanthoxyli Pericarpium (Chuanjiao, 川椒) [remove eyes, 10 grains], Cera Flava (La, 蜂蜡) [half liang].
Finely slice the above herbs, boil in three he of pure Sesame Oil (Mahu You, 清麻油) until the liquid turns purple. Filter, add beeswax, and melt to form an ointment. Apply three times daily, inserting a amount the size of a soybean into the ear.
*Taiping Shenghui Fang* formula for persistent pediatric deafness:
Descurainiae Semen Lepidii Semperorientis (Tinglizi, 甜葶苈), Armeniacae Semen Amarum (Xingren, 杏仁) [soaked in hot water, skin removed], Halitum (Yan, 盐) [equal parts].
Crush and grind the above herbs into a paste. Mix with a small amount of Pig Fat (Zhuzhi, 猪脂), boil until thick. Wrap in cotton cloth like a seed kernel, insert into the ear, replace once daily.
Another prescription:
Pini Resina (Songzhi, 松脂), Acori Tatarinowii Rhizome powder (Shichangpu, 石菖蒲), Sesamum Indicum Nigrum (Wouyouma, 乌油麻) [each half liang].
Mix and crush thoroughly. Wrap in cotton cloth like a red bean, insert into the ear, replace once daily.
Another prescription:
Acori Tatarinowii Rhizome powder (Shichangpu, 石菖蒲) [1 fen], Armeniacae Semen Amarum (Xingren, 杏仁) [soaked in hot water, skin and tip removed, ground into paste, half liang].
Grind together until milky. Use a small amount wrapped in cotton cloth, insert into the ear, replace once daily.
Another prescription:
Take white parts of Allium fistulosum (Congbai, 葱白), roast in ashes until cooked. Insert the head of the scallion into the ear, replace three times daily.
Another prescription:
Ricini Semen (Bimazi, 蓖麻子) [skin removed, 10 seeds], Ziziphi Jujubae Mesocarp (Zaorou, 枣肉) [7 fruits]. Crush together into a paste. Take an amount the size of a seed kernel, wrap in cotton cloth, insert into the ear, replace once daily.
Another prescription:
Crush Sinapis albae Semen (Jiezi, 芥子) until soft. Mix with human milk. Wrap a small amount in cotton cloth, insert into the ear, replace once daily.
*Moxiang San* (Musk Powder), for treating blocked ears (Chen Er).
Moschus (Shexiang, 麝香) [a little], Alumen (Baifan, 白矾) [1 qian, calcined], Terminaliae Chebulae Fructus (Wubeizi, 五倍子) [2 qian].
Grind into powder. Dip a paper twist into the powder and insert a small amount into the ear.
