The infant's umbilicus becomes swollen and damp, failing to heal for a long time. If this persists until one hundred days of age, it becomes critical and life-threatening; prompt treatment is required. The *Cunxin Jing* (Classic of the Cranial Fontanelle) provides a formula for Umbilical Dampness: Calcined Alum (Ku Fan, 枯矾) and Fossilized Bone (Long Gu, 龙骨) are ground into powder, with a small amount of Moschus (She Xiang, 麝香) added. After wiping the umbilicus dry, apply the preparation while avoiding wind. Ash from crimson silk (Jiang Bo Hui, 绛帛灰) may be applied to the umbilicus. One dried toad and one oyster shell are burned to ash, finely ground, and a small amount applied to the umbilicus two or three times daily until healed.
Feng Qi San (Sealing the Umbilicus Powder)
Ash from steamer bands (Zeng Dai Hui, 甑带灰), ash from tangled hair (Luan Fa Hui, 乱发灰), ash from white ginger (Bai Jiang Hui, 白姜灰), ash from red silk (Hong Bo Hui, 红帛灰) [Note: These four ashes must not contain other impurities], Rhizoma Arisaematis (Nan Xing, 南星), Radix Peoniae Alba (Bai Lian, 白蔹), Radix Angelicae Sinensis Head (Dang Gui Tou, 当归头), Semen Phaseoli Rubri (Chi Xiao Dou, 赤小豆), Galla Chinensis (Wu Bei Zi, 五倍子), Sanguis Draconis (Xue Jie, 血竭), Long Gu (龙骨), Lithocarpus Glaber Root Bark (Chi Shi Zhi, 赤石脂), Cutula Sepiae (Hai Piao Xiao, 海螵蛸), Carbonis Herbae (Bai Cao Shuang, 百草霜), and Carthami Flos (Yan Zhi, 胭脂) [each half qian].
Grind all ingredients together into an extremely fine powder. If the area is damp, apply dry powder; if dry, smear with refined sesame oil. Avoid bathing the umbilicus with raw water.
Another Formula
Ash from red cotton (Hong Mian Hui, 红绵灰), ash from yellow cattle dung (Huang Niu Fen Hui, 黄牛粪灰), Long Gu (龙骨), ash from hair (Fa Hui, 发灰), and dry Carthami Flos (Gan Yan Zhi, 干胭脂) [each half qian].
Grind into an extremely fine powder. Apply dry powder whether the area is damp or dry; if dry, smear with refined sesame oil on the umbilicus.
Another Formula: For treating fluid exudation from the umbilicus that does not dry.
Radix Angelicae Sinensis Head (Dang Gui Tou, 当归头) [remove rhizome, 1 qian], Cotton [ash from the umbilical binding band, 1 qian, or old cotton].
Grind into an extremely fine powder, add a small character weight of Moschus (She Xiang, 麝香), and grind together. Apply a small amount as a dry powder to the umbilicus.
Qian Yi's Bo Mo San (Phellodendron and Lampblack Powder)
Cortex Phellodendri Amurensis (Huang Bai, 黄柏), Lampblack from the pot bottom (Fu Xia Mo, 釜下墨), and ash from tangled hair (Luan Fa Hui, 乱发灰) [equal parts].
Grind into a fine powder. Apply a small amount each time.
Zhang Huan's Hu Fen San (Lead White Powder)
Hu Fen (胡粉, Lead Carbonate), Gingerum Zingiberis Recens (Gan Jiang, 干姜) [burned to ash], and Caulon Badii (Bai Shi Zhi, 白石脂) [burned to retain its nature].
Mix equal parts, grind into an extremely fine powder, and blend uniformly. Apply one to half a qian to the umbilicus frequently.
[Zhuang] Qi Qi (Qi Umbilicus): The umbilicus swells like a chestnut, appearing flaccid, soft, and painful. Apply Zhuli (Bamboo Juice, 竹沥) several times daily until it subsides. For infant umbilical dampness causing erosion, grind broken tiles and rotten grass into powder and apply frequently; this is effective.
Chao Yuanfang stated: This condition arises when water enters the umbilicus during bathing, or when urine wets the diaper, causing dampness to invade the umbilicus, leading to swelling, rotting, and ulceration. If the umbilical cord detaches and wind-pathogens invade, entering the meridians, it may transform into Wind Epilepsy (Feng Xian, 风痫). If the umbilicus remains swollen and wet for a long time, it may eventually trigger convulsions. The *Zhou Hou Bei Ji Fang* (Emergency Prescriptions Kept Up the Sleeve) recommends applying ash from a dried toad, three to four times daily, which is beneficial. (*Tian Shou Hui Min He Ji Ju Fang* includes Calcined Alum).
Yi Gong San (Extraordinary Efficacy Powder): For treating umbilical ulcers.
Long Gu (龙骨), Folium Menthae haplocalycis (Bo He Ye, 薄荷叶), Fructus Cnidii (She Chuang Zi, 蛇床子) [each 2 qian], and Calomelas (Qing Fen, 轻粉) [half qian].
Grind into an extremely fine powder. Apply a small amount as a dry powder to the umbilicus.
Long Gu San (Fossilized Bone Powder): For treating umbilical ulcers.
Long Gu (龙骨), Qing Fen (轻粉) [each half qian], and Radix Coptidis (Huang Lian, 黄连) [remove stamens, 1.5 qian].
Grind into an extremely fine powder. Apply a small amount as a dry powder to the umbilicus.
For infants who have reached full term, crying, and experiencing bleeding from the umbilicus, use Caulon Badii (Bai Shi Zhi, 白石脂), stir-fried and ground into an extremely fine powder, applied as a dry powder.
For treating umbilical ulcers that fail to heal due to external wind invasion after cord cutting:
Alumen (Bai Ming Fan, 白明矾), Long Gu (龙骨) [each half qian].
Grind into an extremely fine powder. Apply as a dry powder.
Zhang Huan's Jin Huang San (Golden Yellow Powder): For treating chronic umbilical ulcers where wind pathogens transmit to the meridians, transforming into epilepsy.
Rhizoma Coptidis Chinensis (Chuan Huang Lian, 川黄连) [2.5 qian], Hu Fen (胡粉), and Long Gu (龙骨) [burned to ash, each 1 qian].
Grind each ingredient separately, then mix and grind into a fine powder. Apply a small amount to the umbilicus frequently.
