Yinchen Tang (Cinnamon Twig Decoction): Treats Yangming disease (disease of the Yangming channel) presenting with fever and sweating. This indicates that heat is venting outward, making it impossible to resolve via diaphoresis. If there is only sweat on the head, no sweat on the body, and sweating stops at the neck, accompanied by dysuria (difficult urination) and thirst prompting intake of water or fluids, this signifies stagnant heat trapped in the interior, inevitably leading to jaundice (yellowing of the skin). In cases of cold damage (Shanghan) persisting for seven to eight days, where the body is yellow like an orange peel, dysuria occurs, and there is slight abdominal fullness, this formula is appropriate.
Herbs: Yinchen Hao (Artemisiae Scopariae Herba, tender parts, 1 liang), Dahuang (Rhei Radix et Rhizoma, 3 qian half), Zhizi (Gardeniae Fructus, large ones, 3 pieces).
Crush the herbs into a powder. Boil in one da zhen (large cup) of water; first decoct Yinchen until the volume is halved, then add the other two ingredients. Decoct until eight-tenths remains, strain, and take warm. Administer three times daily. If urine flows freely resembling soap pod juice, with a bright red color, and abdominal fullness decreases overnight, the jaundice will pass through the urine. Adjust dosage according to the patient's size.
Zhizi Bopi Tang (Gardenia and Phellodendron Bark Decoction): Treats jaundice and fever caused by cold damage.
Herbs: Zhizi (Gardeniae Fructus, 8 pieces), Huangbai (Phellodendri Cortex, 1 liang), Gancao (Glycyrrhizae Radix et Rhizoma, ban liang, roasted).
Crush the herbs into a powder. Take 2 qian per dose, boil in one zhan (cup) of water until six-tenths remains, strain, and take warm.
Xijiao San (Rhino Horn Powder): Treats pediatric jaundice with generalized yellowing of the entire body.
Herbs: Xijiao (Rhinocerotis Cornu, sliced, 1 liang), Yinchen (Artemisiae Scopariae Herba), Gange (Puerariae Radix, dried), Shengma (Cimicifugae Rhizoma), Longdancao (Gentianae Radix), Shengdihuang (Rehmanniae Radix, fresh, each ban liang), Hanshuishi (Aqua Calcitae, 7 qian half).
Crush the herbs into a powder and decoct in water for oral administration. Another method for treating sudden jaundice in children with yellowing of the face, eyes, skin, and muscles: crush Genken (Puerariae Radix) to extract juice and mix with honey for administration.
Lianqiao Chixiaodou Tang (Forsythia and Adzuki Bean Decoction): Treats pediatric cold damage manifesting as jaundice and fever.
Herbs: Mahuang (Ephedrae Herba, nodes removed), Lianqiao (Forsythiae Fructus), Gancao (Glycyrrhizae Radix et Rhizoma), Shengjiang (Zingiberis Rhizoma Recens), Chixiaodou (Adzuki Bean), Shengzibai pi (Morus Albae Cortex, fresh, each 2 liang), Xingren (Prunus Armeniaca Semen, 41 pieces), Dazao (Jujubae Fructus, 12 pieces).
Crush the herbs into a powder and decoct in plain water. Another method: crush fresh wheat seedlings to extract juice and administer; effect is immediate.
Luo Qianfu treated a child during late summer who presented with steaming fever, chest and diaphragm oppression and fullness, skin yellow like soaked oranges, yellow sclera, flaccidity of sinews and bones, and inability to walk or stand. This was caused by summer heat combined with dampness, which battled within the meridians and penetrated the bone marrow, disrupting the balance of internal organ qi. Consequently, Spleen Earth overacted upon Heart Fire, and damp-heat merged to form this disease. Heart fire excess leads to steaming fever and chest/diaphragm fullness; Spleen dampness excess leads to skin yellowing like soaked oranges. Excess qi attacks what it controls and insults what it does not control, causing pathogenic invasion of Kidney and Liver, resulting in flaccid sinews and bones and inability to move. The *Neijing* states: "Spleen heat manifests as yellow complexion and muscle twitching." It also states: "Damp-heat causes flaccidity syndrome." These words are indeed true. As stated, "The son can make the mother excessive"; when excessive, drain the son. By draining the Spleen Earth to its proper position, Kidney Water is restored, and Heart Fire naturally calms. Furthermore, the *Neijing* states: "For treating flaccidity syndrome, focus solely on the Yangming channel." This refers precisely to this case. Use Jiawei Xiehuang San (Modified Draining Yellow Powder) as the primary treatment.
Jiawei Xiehuang San Formula: This medicine drains Spleen Earth heat, restores Kidney Water, and descends Heart Fire.
Herbs: Huanglian (Coptidis Rhizoma), Yinchen (Artemisiae Scopariae Herba, each 5 fen), Huangbai (Phellodendri Cortex), Huangqin (Scutellariae Radix), Shanzhi (Gardeniae Fructus), Fuling (Poria, each 3 fen), Zexie (Alismatis Rhizoma, 2 fen).
Chop the herbs. Combine all as a single dose. Boil in one zhan (cup) of water until six-tenths remains, strain, and take slightly warm after meals. After one dose, symptoms should halve; wait five days and administer again for complete recovery.
The classic states: "For the ruler of the Earth position, drain with bitter flavors." It also says: "The Spleen dislikes dampness; urgently consume bitter flavors to dry it." Therefore, use the bitter-cold properties of Huanglian and Yinchen to remove damp-heat as the Sovereign (Jun) herb. The Kidney desires firmness; urgently consume bitter flavors to firm it. Thus, use the bitter-pungent-cold property of Huangbai to strengthen sinews and bones as the Minister (Chen) herb. Damp-heat causes vexation; drain with bitter flavors. Thus, use the bitter-cold properties of Huangqin and Shanzhi to stop vexation and fullness as the Assistant (Zuo) herbs. Dampness overflowing internally is drained with bland flavors. Thus, use the sweet-bland properties of Fuling and Zexie to promote urination and guide out dampness as the Envoy (Shi) herb.
