*Shenghui Fang*: The so-called "Black Dan" (black erysipelas) is caused by wind-toxin invading the muscles, resulting in black discoloration of the skin. Initially, it presents with itching, pain, or swelling and elevation, with a slightly black color.
Formula 1: Eructed Calcined Stone (Fenghua Duan Shi) 2 liang, thatch grass from the four corners of the roof 3 liang, burned to ash and ground into fine powder, mixed with egg white for topical application.
Formula 2: Leonurus Herba (Chongwei Zi) and Dracocephalum Herba (She Xian Cao), each 2 liang, pounded until mushy, mixed with egg white for topical application.
Formula 3: Apply cooked fat of a young black sheep repeatedly to the affected area, three to five times daily. (If a young black sheep is unavailable, a white sheep may be used, though less effective.)
Formula 4: Apply mud from under a pig trough topically.
Another method: Heat a wooden spoon used for feeding pigs and apply heat compresses (warm moxibustion-like therapy) to the affected area.
Zhang Huan's Qudu Dan (Detoxification Pill): Treats black Dan (erysipelas) characterized by itching, pain, and swelling.
Ingredients: Cimicifugae Rhizoma (Chuan Shengma), Euphorbiae Humifusae Herba (Lou Lu), Natrii Sulfas (Mang Xiao) (each 2 liang); Scutellariae Radix (Huang Qin), Gardeniae Semen (Zhi Zi Ren) (each 1 liang).
Preparation and Administration: Grind the above ingredients into coarse powder. For each dose, take two spoonfuls of the powder, add three cups of water, and decoct until reduced. While still warm, apply using a cloth pad over the Dan lesion, continuing until resolution.
*Shenghui Fang*: In infants, Dan (erysipelas) erupts within the flesh, appearing red like cinnabar. Large lesions may cover an area as big as a hand; severe cases involve whole-body redness and itching, hence termed Tianhuo Dan (Heavenly Fire Dan).
*Benshi Fang*: Tianhuo Dan begins on the back with red spots. Use powder of Morus Alba Cortex (Sang Bai Pi) mixed with sheep fat for topical application.
Formula 1: Sesame Oil (Ma You) 5 he, fresh crucian carp half jin, pounded together into a paste, applied to the Dan lesion, changing when dry.
Formula 2: Tiger Fat 2 liang, Minium (Huang Dan) 1 liang, ground into an ointment for topical application.
Formula 3: Cortex Mori Radicis (Sang Gen Bai Pi) 2 liang, Chrysanthemi Flos (Gan Ju Hua) 1.5 liang, Salviae Miltiorrhizae Radix et Rhizoma (Dan Shen), Aristolochiae Herba (Mang Cao) each 1 liang, cut uniformly. Take 2 liang per dose, add 3 sheng of water, boil down to 2 sheng, strain, and use the warm liquid to bathe the infant, avoiding wind exposure.
Formula 4: Obtain one or two he of water from the jar in which the infant's placenta was buried, administer occasionally to the infant orally, and also apply topically to toxic areas on the body.
*Qianjin Fang*: Treats Tianhuo Dan disease, initially starting between the thighs. For infants under one hundred days old, if they offend the taboo of the Kitchen Stove Deity encountered while walking, and heat flows to the glans causing redness, swelling, and bleeding, use Long Gu (Fulong Gan - calcined hematite/loess) ground into powder, mixed with egg white for topical application.
Another Formula: Crucian Carp Meat (cut, 5 he), Vigna Angularis Powder (Xiao Dou Mo, 3 he), pounded into a paste, mixed with water, and applied externally for good effect.
Another Formula: For various fire-Dan conditions, where Heavenly Fire or Dragon Fire adheres to the flesh forming ulcers, urgently spray with salt water, then apply Dioscorea Rhizome (Shan Yao). (If fresh rhizome is unavailable, use dried rhizome ground into powder, mixed with water for topical application.)
Another Formula: Mix Lithii Carbonas (Chi Shi Zhi) powder with sheep fat for topical application.
