Upon birth, the infant emits its first cry. Although the physical form is complete, it remains fragile like a blood clot. The skin and muscles are tender, and the bones and flesh are minute. It is like a bubble in water, or like a flower on a tree. How could the thieves of the Eight Winds (wind pathogens from eight directions) and the evils of the Six Excesses (wind, cold, summer-heat, dampness, dryness, fire) cause rapid harm? They invade from the exterior. This is because within the mother's womb, the fetus was exposed to excessive sweat (pathogenic heat/dampness), suffered from cold or heat injuries, or was disturbed by fright and noise. If the mother consumes fried, roasted, or grilled foods, and indulges in luxurious wines and meats, it leads to chaotic and deceitful Qi dynamics, obstructing the circulation of Yin blood. Disaster brews, toxins accumulate, leaving harm for the newborn sprout. After birth, care is often inadequate. Tight swaddling causes fright; improper breastfeeding postures lead to disease onset, all of which are lamentable. Conditions such as Fetal Jaundice (Neonatal Jaundice), Mouth Closure (a symptom of Neonatal Tetanus where lips contract), Fright Epilepsy with Convulsions (Pediatric Convulsions), Umbilical Wind with Locked Abdomen (Neonatal Tetanus with abdominal distension), resembling a starving crow (describing critical symptoms). All these cases are difficult to manage easily. To sit idle and watch them die, whose fault is it? In the past, the Yellow Emperor said, "Pitying those who babble, I cannot fail to examine them." Treating the young and small requires special skills in regulation and care; it is a distinct branch of medicine. Indeed, this saying is praiseworthy throughout the ages. I dare to advise physicians: maintain your diligence and do not neglect your duties.
