My father, Xia Chuming, once stated: If a child's body is not plump, phlegm-dampness is not particularly excessive, and the child presents with unconsciousness, eyes open and staring at people, one should firmly pinch the Jing (Jing) and Weiling (Weiling) acupoints. If the child shows no awareness of pain, makes no struggling sounds, but only grinds teeth and shakes the head, this indicates that the Qi of the Lung Meridian has exhausted. The Lung belongs to Metal, similar to bells or chimes; if hollow, the sound is bright; if broken, there is no sound. Treatment in this state is of no benefit.
Xia Yuzhu said: The syndrome of Jing Feng (Convulsive Disorder due to fright) belongs to Excess (Shi). As the saying goes: "It is better to treat Excess than Deficiency." If it is indeed Excess, why can it also lead to death? I understand the reason now. This occurs because the child's Lung Qi was originally weak. The Lung governs the skin and hair; when pathogenic factors invade, the Lung suffers first, making the already weak Lung Qi even weaker. The pathogen transmits from the Lung to the Liver, from the Liver to the Spleen, and logically should transmit to the Kidney. However, the Kidney resides lower; although it is the Water organ, wind can move easily while heat and dry fire cannot descend downward. The pathogenic momentum is difficult to block midway, so it顺 (follows the flow) back to transmit to the Lung. Alas, how much Lung Qi reserve can withstand such multiple distresses? At this stage, one must use the Soul-Returning Tree from Juqu Continent and the Reborn Incense from the Western Regions to have any chance of survival.
Xia Chuming further stated: If the phlegm associated with Jing Feng is extremely excessive, and the child is drowsy and unconscious, before convulsions occur, firmly pinch the Jing and Weiling acupoints. If the child does not grind teeth, shake the head, stare straight ahead, or make struggling sounds, position the child facing the practitioner. The practitioner places both hands across the child's shoulders, thumbs forward, and uses the index and middle fingers together to forcefully rub the Feishu (BL13) acupoint. Although the child makes no sound, there are intermittent struggling movements, resembling a potter's wasp calling to a caterpillar in its nest. It is not an open-mouthed call sounding like "me," but rather a tightly closed mouth struggling to produce sound, loud like beads on a string, with sound but no clear tone. This indicates the Lung is obstructed by phlegm, like a bell or chime blocked by an object; even heavy striking produces no sound. This is definitely a survivable case. Urgently moxa the Feishu (BL13) acupoint on both sides, three moxa cones each. Use only Tianbao Caiwei Decoction without manual therapy. If the child regains consciousness after pinching, then apply subsequent manual therapy, fire moxibustion, and medication.
Manual Therapy Method: Push Tianmen twenty-four times (from the glabella up to the hairline). Divide Yin and Yang nine times (use both thumbs to push from the glabella towards the Taiyang and Taiyin points; applicable regardless of Cold, Heat, Excess, or Deficiency). If affected by Cold, vigorously rub the Taiyang point to induce sweating; for children with weak constitutions affected by Cold, also rub the Taiyang point to induce sweating, and rub the Taiyin point to retain sweat, ensuring sweat emerges between the skin and fascia, thereby avoiding Yang collapse due to excessive sweating and worsening weakness. (For female children, rub Taiyin to induce sweating and Taiyang to stop sweating.) Subsequently, pinch once each at Tingting, Glabella, Shangen, Zhuntou, Renzhong, and Chengjiang, substituting for acupuncture. For male children, push the San Guan (Three Passages) on the left hand radially upward thirty times. Corresponding to the Six Fu Organs, perform five or six pushes; hold the child's left and right palms upward with both hands, and divide-push the Zongjin point (midpoint of the palmar wrist crease) six or seven times; circulate the Eight Trigrams on the palm of the left hand, pushing from Gen Palace to Kan Palace twenty to thirty times; bend the child's left little finger and vigorously rub the Wailaogong (EX-UE10) acupoint, named "Yellow Bee Enters the Cave," thirty times; then twist and rub each of the five finger joints twice; stroke downward from the Weizhong (BL40) acupoint on the left foot more than thirty times. For both male and female children, push the left hand and left foot, then stabilize with Yuanxiao Fire (fire moxibustion); subsequently administer Tianbao Caiwei Decoction. The pathogenic factor will be resolved, convulsions will subside, and fever will disappear. This is the method for expelling pathogens. If the symptoms are severe and fever is extremely high, add another dose; there has never been a case where this was ineffective. The fever typically subsides during the fifth watch of the night. The above methods are applicable regardless of Lung Heat, Lung Cold, Liver Hyperactivity, Liver Heat, or Spleen Dampness.
