What is the reason for having nebula (corneal opacity) in the eyes with excessive tearing that does not coagulate? The answer is: This is due to Lung Qi deficiency and Liver Blood deficiency. It is appropriate to apply Zhenzhu Hupo Gao (Pearl and Amber Ointment) and take Ejiao San (Donkey-Hide Gelatin Powder) and Bufei San (Lung-Supplementing Powder). (The formula is seen in Question Seven.)
Ejiao San
Baifuling (Poria, 2 qian) Baizhu (Atractylodes Macrocephala Rhizome, 2 qian) Chuanxiong (Ligusticum Chuanxiong Rhizome, 2 qian) Ejiao (Asini Corii Colla, fried until bead-like, 2 qian) Danggui (Angelica Sinensis Radix, 1 qian)
Add three slices of Shengjiang (Zingiberis Rhizoma Recens), three dates (Jujubae Fructus), decoct in water, and take at any time.
What is the reason for photophobia and aversion to bright light? The answer is: This is due to Spleen Excess Heat. The Spleen belongs to Earth; dampness transmits from the Spleen to the Lung; the Lung is affected by pathogenic fire from the Heart Meridian and transmits it to the eyes. When the Taiyang (Greater Yang) meridian is affected by damp-heat, it overacts on Spleen Earth. When Spleen Earth is excessive, muscle congestion occurs, making it difficult to open, which is caused by the struggle between dampness factors. Therefore, there is photophobia and aversion to bright light. It is appropriate to apply Zhenzhu Gao (Pearl Ointment) and take Xipi Yin (Spleen-Washing Decoction) and Mimeng Wan (Mimeng Pill).
Xipi Yin Treats eyelid swelling, redness, and pain.
Danggui (Angelica Sinensis Radix) Tianhuafen (Trichosanthis Radix) Chishao (Paeoniae Radix Rubra) Huangqin (Scutellariae Radix) Qianghuo (Notopterygii Rhizoma et Radix) Chanshanjia (Manis Squama, fried) Jinyinhua (Lonicerae Japonicae Flos) Baizhi (Angelicae Dahuricae Radix) Lianqiao (Forsythiae Fructus)
Decoct in water. Just before completion, add Dahuang (Rhei Radix et Rhizoma) and Mangxiao (Natrii Sulfas) one or two qian, remove immediately, and take after meals.
Mimeng Wan This formula appears later; take with modifications according to conditions. (It states that more follows, but upon checking, nothing is found afterwards; it is suspected to be a missing leaf.)
Mimenghua (Glochidion Flower) Juhua (Chrysanthemi Flos) Qianghuo (Notopterygii Rhizoma et Radix) Shijueming (Haliotidis Concha, soaked in salt water and fried) Qingjingshi (Qingjingshi) Bajili (Tribuli Fructus, fried and thorns removed)
Grind all ingredients into powder in equal proportions. Make pills using refined honey, sized like wu-tong seeds. Take thirty pills per dose, after meals, three times a day.
What is the reason for blurred vision? The answer is: This is due to Spleen Deficiency. The Spleen belongs to Earth, and the Liver belongs to Wood. Wood controls Earth. There is a conflict between Green (Wood/Liver) and Yellow (Earth/Spleen); since Yellow cannot overcome Green, vision becomes unclear. It is appropriate to apply Zhenzhu Gao (Pearl Ointment) and take Cangzhu Tang (Atractylodis Rhizoma Decoction) and Bushen Wan (Kidney-Supplementing Pill). (The formula is seen in Question Eleven.)
Cangzhu Tang
Cangzhu (Atractylodis Rhizoma, soaked in rice wash water and fried, 1.2 qian) Bencao/Gaoben (Ligustici Wallichii Rhizoma et Radix, 1 qian) Baizhi (Angelicae Dahuricae Radix, 1 qian) Qianghuo (Notopterygii Rhizoma et Radix, 1 qian) Chuanxiong (Ligustici Chuanxiong Rhizome, 1 qian) Gancao (Glycyrrhizae Radix et Rhizoma, 1 qian)
Decoct with Congbai (Allii Fistulosi Bulbus) and Shengjiang (Zingiberis Rhizoma Recens) and take.
