Guizhi (Cinnamon Twig, four liang, peeled, pungent and hot) Fuzi (Prepared Aconite Root, three pieces, processed, peeled, broken into eight slices, pungent and hot) Shengjiang (Fresh Ginger, three liang, sliced, pungent and warm) Gancao (Licorice Root, two liang, honey-fried, sweet and warm) Dazao (Jujube Fruit, twelve pieces, torn open, sweet and warm)
The above five herbs. Boil with six sheng of water. Reduce to two sheng of decoction. Remove the dregs. Divide into three doses and take warm.
When wind pathogen is in the exterior, disperse it with the pungent and sweet properties of Guizhi (Cinnamon Twig) and Gancao (Licorice Root). When dampness pathogen is in the meridians, drive it out with the pungent and hot property of Fuzi (Prepared Aconite Root). The pungent and sweet properties of Shengjiang (Fresh Ginger) and Dazao (Jujube Fruit) circulate Ying (Nutritive Qi) and Wei (Defensive Qi). They unblock Jin-Ye (Body Fluids) to harmonize the exterior.
When wind and dampness contend with each other, causing severe pain and pulling sensation in the bone joints, inability to flex or extend, and intensified pain upon touch, accompanied by sweating, shortness of breath, dysuria, aversion to wind, reluctance to remove clothing, or slight edema, Gancao Fuzi Tang (Licorice and Aconite Decoction) is the primary formula.
Wind pathogen injures Wei Qi (Defensive Qi), while dampness flows into the joints. Wind and dampness contending disrupt the meridians, hence the severe pain and pulling sensation in the bone joints, inability to flex or extend, and intensified pain upon touch. Excess wind leads to insecure Wei Qi (Defensive Qi), resulting in sweating, shortness of breath, aversion to wind, and reluctance to remove clothing, indicating wind in the exterior. Excess dampness leads to impaired fluid metabolism, resulting in dysuria or slight edema, indicating dampness pressing on the exterior. Administer Gancao Fuzi Tang (Licorice and Aconite Decoction) to dissipate dampness and secure Wei Qi (Defensive Qi).
Gancao (Licorice Root, two liang, honey-fried, sweet and neutral) Fuzi (Prepared Aconite Root, two pieces, processed, peeled, broken, pungent and hot) Baizhu (Atractylodes Rhizome, two liang, sweet and warm) Guizhi (Cinnamon Twig, four liang, peeled, pungent and hot)
The above four herbs. Boil with six sheng of water. Reduce to three sheng of decoction. Remove the dregs. Take one sheng warm. Three times daily. After the initial dose, if a slight sweat occurs, the condition resolves. If appetite returns but restlessness recurs after sweating, administer five he. If one sheng is considered too much, administering six or seven he is optimal.
The pungent and sweet properties of Guizhi (Cinnamon Twig) and Gancao (Licorice Root) dissipate wind pathogen and secure Wei Qi (Defensive Qi). The pungent and sweet properties of Fuzi (Prepared Aconite Root) and Baizhu (Atractylodes Rhizome) resolve dampness and warm the meridians.
Huoren Shu (Book of Vitality) states: For slight edema, add Fangfeng (Saposhnikovia Root) one liang. For palpitations and dysuria, add Baifuling (Poria, *Poria cocos*) one and a half liang.
In Shanghan (Cold Damage), a floating and slippery pulse indicates heat in the exterior and cold in the interior. Baihu Tang (White Tiger Decoction) is the primary formula.
Floating pulse indicates disease in the exterior; slippery pulse indicates disease in the interior. Heat in the exterior means external heat pathogen. Cold in the interior means pathogen has transmitted inward. Since the pathogen has not yet entered the Fu organs, only "cold" is mentioned. This is similar to the Gengti San (Melon Seed Powder) pattern where "cold in the chest" is described. Administer Baihu Tang (White Tiger Decoction) to resolve both internal and external pathogens.
