Shengtie Luo Yin (Raw Iron Falling Drink): Treats mania characterized by arrogance and disregard for kinship or social boundaries.
Ingredients and Preparation: Tieluo (Raw iron filings obtained by heating raw iron until red-hot, forging it on an anvil so that fine particles fall like pollen; take approximately one sheng, boil in two dou of water until reduced to one dou, to prepare the decoction base). Shigao (Gypsum Fibrosum, 2 liang); Longchi (Dragon Bone, quenched in vinegar and levigated); Baifuling (Poria, 1.5 liang); Fangfeng (Saposhnikovia Root, 1.5 liang); Heishen (Black Ginseng, 1 liang); Qinjiao (Gentiana Macrophylla Root, 1 liang).
Grind the herbs into coarse powder. Add them to the Tieluo decoction and boil until reduced to five sheng. Strain the dregs, add Zhuli (Bamboo Sap, 1 sheng), and mix evenly. Take two he of the warm mixture three times daily.
Laisu Gao (Lisu Ointment): Treats wind-epilepsy of recent or remote onset, heart-organ wind-mania, lockjaw, and phlegm-saliva flooding and obstruction.
Ingredients and Preparation: Zaorou (Gleditsia Sinensis Fruit, 2 liang; select thick, uninfested stalks, remove skin, strings, and seeds, and slice).
Soak in two sheng of sour placket water until thoroughly permeated, then knead to extract juice. Boil in a clay pot using alternating mild and strong fire, stirring constantly with locust or willow branches until it reaches a paste-like consistency. Spread onto layered paper and dry in the shade. For use, take a piece the size of a palm, dissolve it in a cup with warm sour placket water. Use a small bamboo tube to administer the medicine. Have the patient sit firmly, tilt their head back slightly, and blow the medicine into both nostrils. After some time, help the patient sit up; the discharge of phlegm-saliva indicates efficacy. Follow with one or two mouthfuls of warm salted water to stop the salivation. Avoid chicken, fish, raw, hard, and damp wheat products.
Dairen Sansheng San (Da Ren’s Three Holy Powders): Treats obstruction caused by damp-phlegm.
Ingredients: Gouti (Melon Seed, stir-fried until slightly yellow, 2 liang); Fangfeng (Saposhnikovia Root, 2 liang); Lilu (Veratrum Nigrum Rhizome, 0.5 liang).
Grind into a powder. Take 4–5 fen per dose. Mix with three zhan of Scallion Juice, slowly boil down to one zhan, strain, clarify, and let cool to warm temperature before administering slowly. The goal is to induce vomiting; do not necessarily consume the entire dose.
Xixin San (Heart-Washing Powder, from *Ju Fang*): Treats accumulation of heat in the Heart organ and excessive phlegm, leading to mouth and tongue ulcers, and constipation/urinary retention.
Ingredients: Mahuang (Ephedrae Herba, including nodes, 1 liang); Danggui (Angelicae Sinensis Radix, 2 liang); Dahuang (Rhei Radix et Rhizoma, mixed with wine and fermented grain, baked, 3 liang); Baizhu (Atractylodis Macrocephalae Rhizoma, raw); Shaoyao (Paeoniae Radix); Jingjie (Schizonepetae Herba, each 1 liang); Gancao (Licorice Root, honey-fried, 2 liang).
Grind into a powder. Take 3–4 qian per dose. Add three slices of fresh ginger and seven leaves of bohe (Menthae Haplocalycis Herba), decoct in water, strain, and take warm. Alternatively, mix 3 qian with tea liquor. Take twice daily.
Another prescription: Remove Baizhu, Shaoyao, Jingjie, and Gancao; increase Shengdihuang (Rehmanniae Radix) to 2 liang; add Huanglian (Coptidis Rhizoma) and Muxiang (Aucklandiae Radix), each 5 qian.
Shengjin Dan (Victory Golden Pill): Treats dementia, manic rage, and shouting. Effective for both chronic and acute cases. Contraindicated for patients with wind-epilepsy of lost mind, sorrowful mutism, or those with deficient Yuan Qi.
Ingredients: Bai Pi (White Arsenic, 1 qian); Lvdou (Mung Bean, 360 grains, soaked in water, peeled, ground together with Bai Pi into a paste, dried in shade); Fei Zhizi (Gardeniae Fructus, 40 fruits, peeled, sun-dried, ground without exposure to fire); Xionghuang (Realgar); Cihuang (Orpiment, both processed by water levigation, 1 qian each); Jixingzi (Impatiens Seed, peeled and ground, 2 qian).
Grind all ingredients into an extremely fine powder, mix evenly, and store in a porcelain jar. Take 7–8 fen per dose (up to 1 qian for robust individuals). Before administration, add 5–7 li of Xi Niuhuang (Bovis Calculus) and 3–5 li of Bingpian (Borneolum Syntheticum), grind finely together, and incorporate into a cake or biscuit for consumption.
Alternative formula: Add Zhenzhu (Margarita, boiled in rot and ground), Hupo (Amber), and Goushi (Xanthii Fructus), each 1 qian. Divide into twenty doses. Administration method is the same as above, adding 5 li of Xi Niuhuang and 3 li of Bingpian. Take 1.5 liang of high-quality white flour, divide into two parts. Mix half with 1.5 qian of white sugar frost and the medicine to form the filling. Mix the other half with 1 qian of white sugar to form the outer wrapper. Shape into cakes, cook thoroughly, and eat. Rinse mouth with ginger soup afterward. Vomiting and diarrhea should occur shortly after, indicating cure. If no vomiting occurs, induce vomiting by grinding 1 qian of soapberry flesh with water and forcing it down. After vomiting, drink water made from grinding rusty nails frequently (6–7 times) to calm the spirit and prevent recurrence. Note: The medicine contains arsenic; alcohol is strictly forbidden. The pill form is necessary to extract stubborn phlegm. Response varies: some react after one dose, others after two or three, due to differences in stomach qi strength.
Qingshen Tang (Spirit-Clearing Decoction): Treats deficiency-heat in the Heart and Lungs, and phlegm confusing the upper jiao.
Ingredients: Huanglian (Coptidis Rhizoma); Fuling (Poria); Suanzaoren (Ziziphi Spinosae Semen, raw and ground); Shichangpu (Acori Tatarinowii Rhizoma); Baiziren (Biota Seed); Yuanzhi (Polygalae Radix, meat only, each 1.5 qian); Gancao (Licorice Root, honey-fried, 5 fen); Jiangzhi (Fresh Ginger Juice, a little); Zhuli (Bamboo Sap, half cup).
Decoct in water. Take well after meals. For Lung deficiency, add Renshen (Ginseng Radix et Rhizoma) 1 qian. For Lung heat, add Shashen (Glehniae Radix) 2 qian. For phlegm obstruction, add Banxia (Pinelliae Rhizoma) and Nanxing (Arisaema Cum Bile), each 1 qian, plus Juhong (Citri Reticulatae Pericarpium Rubrum) and Gualou Shuang (Trichosanthis Pulvis), each 6 fen.
