Hugu Sijin Wan (Tiger Bone Four-Jin Pill): Treats deficiency-cold of the Liver and Kidney, complicated by Wind-Dampness, resulting in pain in the feet and knees.
Ingredients: Mugwort Fruit (Chaogua, 木瓜), Gastrodia Rhizome (Tianma, 天麻), Cistanche Stem (Roucongrong, 肉苁蓉) (washed with wine to remove decay), Achyranthes Root (Niuxi, 牛膝) (each one jin); Aconite Root (Fuzi, 附子) (processed, two liang); Tiger Tibia and Palm Bones (Hujing bing zangggu, 虎胫并掌骨) (one set, roasted with butter).
The above four ingredients (Chaogua, Tianma, Roucongrong, Niuxi) are soaked in five sheng of fine wine. Soak for five days in spring, three days in summer, seven days in autumn, and ten days in winter. Take them out, bake dry, slice, and stir-fry until dry. Then grind together with Fuzi and Hugu into a fine powder. Use the wine used for soaking the herbs to make a paste and form pills the size of a Chinese quince seed (Wuzi da). Take 50-70 pills per dose before meals with salt water; at bedtime, take with the wine used for soaking the herbs. If the soaking wine is finished, use aged wine instead. If Tiger Tibia bone is unavailable, palm bones from any position can be used as substitutes.
Lurong Sijin Wan (Deer Antler Four-Jin Pill) (from *Ju Fang*): Treats deficiency of both the Kidney and Liver, characterized by flaccidity and weakness of tendons and bones, trembling, and shaking.
Preparation: Remove Fuzi and Hugu from Hugu Sijin Wan, add two sets of Deer Antler (Lurong, 鹿茸), Semen Cuscutae (Tusizi, 菟丝子), Prepared Rehmannia Root (Shudihuang, 熟地黄), and Eucommia Bark (Duzhong, 杜仲) (each half a jin). Form pills with honey, sized like Chinese quince seeds. Take 60-70 pills per dose on an empty stomach with light salt water; at bedtime, take with warm wine.
Chuanxiong Rongui Tang (Ligusticum and Cinnamon Twig Decoction): Treats pain in the waist and hypochondrium due to blood stasis caused by long-term residence in cold and damp environments, making it difficult to turn or change posture.
Ingredients: Notopterygium Rhizome (Qianghuo, 羌活) (1.5 qian), Bupleurum Root (Chaihu, 柴胡), Ligusticum Rhizome (Chuanxiong, 川芎), Angelica Sinensis Root Tip (Danggui Shao, 当归梢), Licorice Root (Gancao, 甘草), Cinnamon Twig (Rongui, 肉桂), Atractylodes Rhizome (Cangzhu, 苍术) (each 1 qian); Angelica Pubescens Root (Duhuo, 独活), Saposhnikovia Root (Fangfeng, 防风) (each 0.5 qian); Stephania Tetrandra Root (Hanfangji, 汉防己) (washed with wine, 0.3 qian); Peach Kernel (Taoren, 桃仁) (seven kernels, ground).
Decoct one sheng of water and one sheng of wine until eight he remain. Take hot after a considerable time following meals.
