After childbirth, Qi and Blood are suddenly deficient; theoretically, major tonification is appropriate. However, since lochia (postpartum discharge) has not yet cleared, when using tonification, one must simultaneously employ methods to move stagnation. This approach can transform stasis while generating new blood; removing masses does not damage Yuan Qi, and moving within the context of tonification achieves perfection. Using Siwu Tang (Four Substances Decoction) to manage postpartum conditions has misled many. Shudi (Rehmanniae Radix Preparata) is cold in nature and causes blood stasis; Baishao (Paeoniae Radix Alba) is sour and cold, lacking tonifying properties.
Postpartum mass pain is named "Erzhen" (Fetal Pillow). The world generally advocates first dispersing/consuming, then discussing tonification, or establishing mixed formulas for both eliminating and tonifying. Little do they know that old blood must be transformed/digested, and new blood should be generated/nourished. If one specializes in attacking old blood, generation will also be unsettled. The world uses Jikun Dan (also known as Huisheng Dan) to treat postpartum conditions, using it to attack blood masses and expel the placenta/fetus. Although it shows rapid effect, Yuan Qi is inevitably damaged. For safe deliveries, do not regard it as a good remedy; if absolutely necessary, take one pill, but do not take more.
Shenghua Tang is named after the properties and functions of its herbs. Postpartum blood masses should be eliminated, and new blood should be generated. If specializing in elimination, new blood will not be peaceful; if specializing in generation, old blood will become stagnant. Examining the properties of various herbs, only Xiong (Chuanxiong Rhizome), Gui (Angelicae Sinensis Radix), and Tao Ren (Persicam Semen) are good at breaking old blood and rapidly generating new blood. Assisted by Pao Jiang (Zingiberis Rhizoma Preparatum) and Gancao (Glycyrrhizae Radix et Rhizoma), guiding into the Liver and Lung meridians, generating blood and benefiting Qi, moving with tonification, transforming with generation, it is truly an excellent formula for postpartum conditions.
Shenghua Tang: Danggui (8 qian), Chuanxiong (3 qian), Taoren (15 grains, peeled and core removed), Heijiang (Black Ginger), Zhi Gancao (each 5 fen, original text mentions Chenpi). After decocting well, add 7 spoons of wine. Take hot. It is required to take three doses continuously within one to two hours before any food intake. Taking more frequently causes stasis to dissolve quickly and new blood to generate abruptly, thereby avoiding dizziness/syncope. If constitution was weak during pregnancy, or due to postpartum fatigue, two additional prescriptions should be taken to prevent critical exhaustion. Moreover, after taking one prescription, the patient's spirit gradually increases, naturally not disliking the frequent medication. If taken at intervals as usual, one prescription can only support critical conditions; if a deficient person presents with critical symptoms plus heat signs, or abortion/trauma, body tidal fever, headache, taking four to five prescriptions will surely bring peace. If accompanied by blood pain, further doses should be taken.
When approaching delivery, prepare two or three prescriptions in advance. Once the amniotic sac ruptures, quickly decoct one prescription and administer immediately upon the baby's descent. Regardless of normal delivery or miscarriage, even for young and strong women delivering safely, it is advisable to take two prescriptions to eliminate masses and nourish new blood.
For new births and within three days, take Shenghua Tang. If pain and masses persist after two or three days, take again. Within seven days, if blood masses remain, do not add Renshen (Ginseng Radix) or Baizhu (Atractylodis Macrocephalae Rhizoma), lest pain ceaselessly continue.
