Mr. Wang: In the late summer season, dampness is prevalent and primarily damages the middle yang of the spleen and stomach. Dampness is a yin-turbid qi, leading to loss of appetite and diarrhea; this is due to dampness stagnation and qi obstruction, causing dysfunction of ascending and descending mechanisms. The vibration from coughing causes bleeding. Physicians are aware of wind-cold and fire pathogens but rarely understand summerheat-dampness and dryness. Consequently, treatments become increasingly futile, leaving them bewildered and ineffective. Upon arriving in Wu, three prescriptions were changed, reducing the illness by half. Tracing back to the root, harmonizing the middle (Jian Pi) is essential (The cause of bleeding is dampness; however, by promoting qi circulation, there is no need to specifically attend to blood, which will stop on its own. This is treating the disease by seeking its root).
Sheng Guya (Raw Sprouted Grain), Fuling (Poria), Baishao (White Peony Root), Zhigancao (Honey-fried Licorice), Miren (Coix Seed), Beishashen (Glehnia Root).
The medicinal properties are clear and mild; treating dampness without being overly drying or agitating blood.
Mr. Qian (Residing at Xinxin Alley, aged 43): Kidney essence is internally depleted, resulting in bone flaccidity and muscle emaciation. Urination is involuntary, resembling strangury. Bowel movements are unsatisfactory. Qi sinks into the essence gate, fluid is dried up, and orifices are obstructed (Excessive discharge causes true qi to sink and scatter; essence leaks with qi, the essence gate fails to secure, urination resembles strangury, marrow bones are not nourished, naturally leading to bone flaccidity and muscle wasting). Since有形 (substantial) essence and blood have been lost, herbal medicines cannot easily regenerate them. It is better to use blood-and-qi tonics (flesh-and-blood有情 substances) to fill the Chong and Ren meridians. Long-term and frequent administration is required so that kidney fluids may silently generate, thereby preserving life. (This statement carries weight. Those accustomed to sexual techniques force the qi of zang-fu organs to pour entirely into the yang pathway; they appear non-flaccid during illness but collapse at the critical moment.)
Heche (Placenta Humanus), Renru (Human Milk) refined into paste, taken with Ginseng Decoction.
Mr. Qi (Aged 48): Sudden warmth in April and May, combined with rain and dampness, caused diarrhea. This indicates qi deficiency due to overwork and fatigue, making one susceptible to seasonal pathogens. Current symptoms show spleen-stomach disharmony, where long-summer heat and diarrhea have drained yuan qi, injuring stomach fluids. The mouth loses the ability to distinguish the five flavors (Treated with modifications of Suopi Yin).
Renshen (Ginseng Root), Sharen (Amomum Fruit), Jiegeng (Platycodon Root), Miren (Coix Seed), Wumei (Mume Fruit), Baokouren (Cardamom Seed), Juhong (Citrus Peel), Guya (Sprouted Grain).
Mr. Zhang (Residing at Shuiguan Bridge, aged 49): The patient reports four years of coughing, occurring every time he lies down on the pillow, ceasing only when deep sleep is achieved. This is due to kidney deficiency with rebellious qi attacking upward. Physicians treated the lung for cough, delaying care until edema appeared on the dorsum of the foot and swelling of the scrotum. Yin water spreads diffusely, and yang lacks opening and closing functions. These are all harms caused by using only lung-targeting herbs (Discussing the opening and closing of yang qi reveals great talent and meticulous attention to detail).
