Lu Beihao, aged twenty-eight. The pathogenic factor of summerheat was contracted first; drinking cold water and melon juice caused the stomach opening to be further congealed by cold-dampness. This malaria is a disease of the spleen and stomach. The tongue has a white coating with coldness in the back; treatment should follow the interior syndrome pattern (the differentiation between exterior and interior is clear, and internal medicines are used throughout.)

Mr. Ye’s *Lin Zheng Zhi Nan* (Guide to Clinical Practice) has circulated widely throughout the country, and practitioners of the art of Xuanyuan and Qibo (traditional Chinese medicine) invariably keep a copy in their homes. Critics claim that it contains many forgeries, that its intent and prescription formulation have points open to discussion, and that it is not the definitive edition from that time. Previously, while studying under Master Bei, I saw several pages of prescriptions handwritten by Mr. Ye. His therapeutic methods were divine and subtle, and his handwriting was vigorous and ancient in style. I heard that Mr. Ye’s family possessed another version passed down through generations, which had not been shown to outsiders for six generations; this was the one truly evaluated by Huixi. In the early years of the Xianfeng reign, the "Yue rebels" disturbed the Wu region. Mr. Ye’s family declined financially, and they sold large baskets of books in the market, filled with old papers. Upon inspection, this book was among them. Zhenjia exchanged a substantial sum of money to bring it home, feeling as if he had obtained a Persian treasure. He fled alone to the sea coast, carrying the book with him. Some people mocked or ridiculed him, but he paid no heed. Now, nearly thirty years have passed hastily, and Zhenjia is also old. If this book were eventually lost, would it not make me a sinner against Mr. Ye? Mr. Ye’s great-grandson, Naren, had previously engraved *Yi An Cun Zhen* (True Preserved Medical Cases), but this book was not fully included in that publication and was kept as a family secret. Therefore, I entrusted my disciples to carefully collate and revise it, so as to make it public to the world. The true transmission of Mr. Ye will not perish, which is also Zhenjia’s fortune. Zhenjia once consulted Mr. Ye’s books and discussed them; occasionally gaining some insights, I appended these trivial notes above, merely to awaken the readers’ attention. Mr. Ye was profound in medicine, but few of his writings are seen. In his later years, those seeking medical treatment wore out the threshold of his door, leaving little leisure to write. A few chapters on warm-heat diseases, written by Cheng, a resident of Jizha on Dongting Mountain, while traveling by boat, were transmitted by him, but I have no other records.
In the mid-winter of the Wuzi year, the fourteenth year of Guangxu, Zhang Zhenjia, a junior scholar from Wu County, wrote this postscript.
