*Banxia* (Pinelliae Rhizoma) has *Shéyè* (Belamcandae Rhizoma) and *Cháihú* (Bupleuri Radix) as its guiding herbs. It is incompatible with *Shēngjiāng* (Zingiberis Rhizoma Recens), *Gānjiāng* (Zingiberis Rhizoma), *Qínpí* (Phellodendri Cortex), Guījiǎ (Testudinis Carapax et Plastrum), and Xiónghuáng (Realgar). It opposes Zàojiá (Gleditsiae Sinensis Fructus Spina). It is contraindicated with Hǎizǎo (Sargassum), Yángròu (Ovis/Caprae Meat), Yángxuè (Ovis/Caprae Blood), and Yítáng (Maltose).
Pungent in flavor, warm in nature, toxic. Enters the Qi aspect of the Foot-Taiyin Spleen Meridian, Foot-Yangming Stomach Meridian, and Foot-Shaoyang Gallbladder Meridian. It benefits orifices, harmonizes the Stomach, and unblocks Yin and Yang. It is a supreme medicine for dispelling dampness, resolving phlegm, relieving depression, and stopping vomiting. It restores voice, rescues from sudden collapse, treats insomnia, manages leukorrhea turbidity, eliminates goiter, dissipates palpable masses, treats palpitations due to fright, and stops malaria. Combined with Shúmǐ (Sorghum Vulgare), it harmonizes the Spleen and Stomach (because dampness is removed). Combined with Zhūlíng (Polyporus) and Mǔlì (Ostrea Shell), it treats nocturnal emission. Combined with Báiliǎn (Ampelopsis Radix), it treats metal wounds penetrating bone. When added to bitter-cold formulas, it can disperse fire (using its pungency to scatter it). When added to Qi-regulating formulas, it harmonizes Middle Jiao Qi (when dampness is removed, Middle Jiao Qi harmonizes). When added to Yin-nourishing formulas, it disperses constrained heat (using its pungency to scatter it). As an assistant to Yin-nourishing herbs, it can open dryness (when damp-heat descends, the Zang-Fu organs become moistened). Assisting Zhúrú (Bambusa Textilis Caulis), it treats palpitations (phlegm accumulating in collaterals causes heart fright). Assisting Lóurén (Trichosanthis Semen), it treats evil heat binding in the chest. Assisting Huángqín (Scutellariae Radix) and Liánzǐ (Nelumbinis Semen - *Note: Context implies Huanglian/Coptidis Rhizoma usually paired with Huangqin for fire-phlegm, but text says Qin/Lian*), it treats Fire-Phlegm and Old Phlegm. Assisting Shēngjiāng (Zingiberis Rhizoma Recens) and Fùzǐ (Aconiti Lateralis Radix Praeparata), it treats Cold-Phlegm and Damp-Phlegm. Ground into powder and insufflated into the nose, it treats the "Five Extinctions" (five types of apparent death). It also treats prolapse of the uterus during childbirth or failure of the uterus to retract postpartum, known as "Pan Chang Chan" (Coiled Intestine Birth); frequent insufflation into the nose will cause retraction.
Processed by boiling with Zàojiá (Gleditsiae Sinensis Fructus Spina) and Báifán (Alumen), then mixed with Shēngjiāng juice. For Fright-Phlegm, stir-fry with Danzhī (Gallus Gallus Domesticus Brain - *Note: Text says Danzhi/Bile, likely Pig Bile*). Can also be made into pills: For Damp-Phlegm, mix with Shēngjiāng juice and Báifán decoction; For Wind-Phlegm, mix with Shēngjiāng juice and Zàojiá juice; For Fire-Phlegm, mix with Shēngjiāng juice and Zhúlì (Bambusa Textilis Sap); For Cold-Phlegm, mix with Shēngjiāng juice and Báijiézǐ (Brassicae Semis Albi).
Contraindicated in Lung disease cough, Tuberculosis with expectoration, Yin deficiency with blood depletion, phlegm caused by fire agitation, pregnant women (harmless if combined with Shēngjiāng), profuse sweaters, thirsty individuals, and those with blood disorders.
Also known as Zǐhéchē, Cǎo Gānsuì, Bái Gānsuì.
Incompatible with Xiónghuáng (Realgar), Dānshā (Cinnabaris), Péngshā (Borax), and salt.
Bitter in flavor, cold in nature, toxic. Enters the Foot-Jueyin Liver Meridian. Treats convulsions, epilepsy, mania, malaria with chills and fever, yin erosion, carbuncles and swellings, scrofula, and snake venom. Ground into powder and taken with cold water (5 fen), it treats infantile wind convulsion and tetany of hands and feet.
Wash and bake before use. Grind with vinegar and apply topically; very effective for carbuncles, swellings, and snake venom. This is a toxic herb; do not take lightly.
