Tao Xiao (Dried Peach Fruit Hanging on Tree)
Refers to the peach fruit that remains hanging on the tree through the winter without falling. Also known as Tao Nu (Peach Slave).
Bitter, slightly warm. Slightly toxic. Treats Zhu Wu (a condition characterized by mental confusion or possession-like symptoms caused by evil qi), cures Zhong E (sudden fainting or emergency syndrome caused by foul pathogenic factors), breaks Fu Liang (abdominal masses), and stops malignant malaria. When stir-fried to charcoal and taken with rice water, it treats hematemesis (vomiting blood).
Steam with wine mixed, remove the kernel, and bake dry for use.
Tao Ren (Peach Kernel)
Xiangfu (Cyperus Rhizome) is its guiding herb. Sweet, bitter, neutral. Enters the blood aspect of the Foot-Shaoyin and Hand-Shaoyin meridians (Liver and Gallbladder channels). Removes stasis and generates new blood, soothes the Liver, and moistens dryness. Treats blood coagulation and accumulation, blood stasis and abdominal masses (Zheng Jia), wind-bi due to blood stagnation, bloody dysentery and amenorrhea, heat entering the Blood Chamber (Xue Shi), postpartum blood disorders, and various pains in the heart and abdomen. Expels Zhu Wu evil, kills three types of parasites, moistens the intestines to relieve constipation, and stops malaria. Combined with Yuan Hu (Corydalis Rhizome) and Chuan Lian Zi (Sichuan Chinaberry Seed), it treats stomach pain caused by Liver Qi reversal. Added to Xiao Chai Hu Tang (Minor Bupleurum Decoction), it treats heat entering the Blood Chamber.
For promoting blood circulation, use raw with skin and tips intact. For moistening dryness and activating blood, soak to remove skin and tips, then stir-fry, or stir-fry with bran and grind. Peaches with double kernels are toxic and should not be used.
All conditions of amenorrhea and constipation caused by blood deficiency are strictly contraindicated.
Tao Hua (Peach Blossom)
Bitter, neutral. Enters the Foot-Yangming Stomach channel. Scatters stagnant blood, breaks stone lin (urinary calculi), expels phlegm-fluid retention, treats accumulated pain, kills three types of parasites, and resolves toxin from smallpox/variolae. (If after two or three days of eruption, the lesions become scorched purple or present as dander/erythema, this herb can treat them.) With warm wine, it treats chronic phlegm-fluid retention and Hong Kong jiao (podagra/foot swelling and pain). Taken with flour, it expels dry feces. Pounded and mixed with pig fat, it is applied to suppurative sores.
Harvest early in the morning with dew, steam over rice until cooked, bake dry for use; or select clean ones, place in a silk bag, and hang under the eaves to dry naturally. Varieties with thousand petals cause persistent epistaxis (nosebleed) and must not be used. Excessive use causes diarrhea.
Tao Jiao (Peach Gum)
Bitter, neutral. Harmonizes blood and benefits Qi. Treats dysentery and relieves pain. Combined with Tong Cao (Tetrapanax Medulla) and Shi Gao (Gypsum Fibrosum), it treats painful strangury (blood strangury). Combined with Chen Xiang (Aquilaria Wood) and Pu Huang (Typha Pollen), it treats postpartum dysentery. (Also treats bloody dysentery with abdominal pain.) Boiled with water into a paste and dissolved in wine, it treats convulsions induced by smallpox/variolae.
Tree sap exudes and forms gum; soak in ash water from mulberry branches, sun-dry for use. If consumed as food, it must be processed according to specific methods.
Tao Ye (Peach Leaf)
Bitter, acrid. Treats all types of sores, insect bites, and corpse-worm infections. For various insects entering the ear, or worms eroding the vaginal opening, wrap the leaves and insert into the affected area to eliminate the pests.
