Sweet, warm. It is a drug of the Yangming channel. Because it absorbs the qi of gold and silver, it is an essential medicine for treating eye diseases. Li Shizhen often used Luganshi (Calamina) quenched with vinegar, combined with Haipiaoxiao (Cuttlefish Bone) and Pengsha (Borax), each one liang, ground into fine powder, to apply to the eyes for various eye diseases, which is very effective. Adding Zhusha (Cinnabar) five qian makes the property non-sticky. Combined with Kufan (Alum), Yanzhi (Rouge), and Shexiang (Musk), blown into the ear to stop discharge. Combined with Zhenbangfen (Real Pearl Powder), dusted on the genitals to treat sweat-induced itching. Paired with Haiercha (Katechu), applied to treat chancre sores in the genital area. Paired with Qingdai (Indigo Naturalis) and Bingpian (Borneol), applied to treat chancre.
Whenever using Luganshi (Calamina), calcine it over charcoal fire until red-hot, quench it in Tongbian (Child's Urine), or quench it seven times in decoction of Huanglian (Coptis Rhizome). Wash clean, grind into powder, process by water levigation (Shuifei), dry, and use.
Sweet, very cold. Treats heat accumulation, hot cough, hot malnutrition (gan), hot eyes, etc. Paired with Haijinsha (Lygodii Spora) and Huashi (Talcum), treats bladder heat constipation. Paired with Dahuang (Rhubarb) and Zhizi (Gardenia Fruit), treats swollen and red eyelids. Must be finely ground and processed by water levigation; otherwise, it causes strangury.
It can subdue Liu Huang (Sulfur).
Sweet, salty, neutral. Invigorates blood and cools blood. Treats traumatic injuries and fractures. Taken with aged wine, it treats swelling and pain from bruises. Ground with vinegar, applied to sores and abscesses. Mixed with scallion juice, applied to erysipelas and toxic rashes. Mixed with ox glue, treats Honggangjiao (Beriberi/Chilblains) swelling and pain. Paired with Tianguazi (Melon Seed) one liang, Ruxiang (Frankincense) and Moyao (Myrrh) one qian each, ground into powder. Take five qian per dose, mixed with hot wine; children take three qian. Treats trauma and bone fractures. Externally, spread yellow millet porridge on paper, sprinkle Muli (Oyster Shell) powder, wrap firmly, and clamp with a bamboo splint. Grind into fine powder, roll paper into a wick, light it, blow out, and use the black smoke to fumigate inverted eyelashes.
Also known as Eguanshi (Stalactite).
Shechuangzi (Cnidium Fruit) is its guiding herb. It is incompatible with Zishiyang (Fluorite), Suocao, Mudanpi (Tree Peony Root Bark), Xuan Shi, Mumen, Renshen (Ginseng), and Zhu (Atractylodes). Avoid sheep blood. It is subdued by Jiu Shi, Du Suan, Hu Cong, Hu Sui, Maidong (Ophiopogon Tuber), and Mao'er Yan Cao.
Sweet, warm. Enters the Qi aspect of the Foot Shaoyin Kidney channel. Opens the nine orifices, unblocks the hundred joints, strengthens primordial yang, and treats cold feet.
Paired with Loulu (Rhapontic Radix) and Tongcao (Tetrapanacis Medulla), promotes lactation.
The texture is smooth and light, shaped like a goose feather tube. Boil Chenxiang (Agarwood), Huoxiang (Patchouli), Gansong (Nardostachys Root), and Baimaogen (Imperata Rhizome) in water, then boil again with Tiankui and Gancao (Licorice Root). Dry, grind fine, process by water levigation, clarify, pass through silk gauze, dry, grind fine again, and store. Those who consume Zhongru Shi (Stalactite) must avoid Zhu and Renshen for life; those who violate this often die. Mineral drugs are fierce in nature. Do not take them continuously just because they tonify yang and aid conception, lest you bring about sudden disaster. Moreover, cases of internal cold due to yang deficiency are rare (one or two in a hundred); reckless use will ignite fire and generate wind, causing myriad diseases to arise. Even if suitable for consumption, long-term use inevitably leads to strangury, thirst, and carbuncles/fistulas.
