This is *Cibotium barometz* (Jinmao Gouji).
*Bianxie* (Dioscorea hypoglauca Rhizome) serves as its guiding herb. It is incompatible with *Shacao* (Cyperus rotundus) and *Baijiang* (Patrinia scabiosifolia Root).
Slightly bitter, slightly warm. Enters the Qi level of the Foot-Shaoyin (Kidney) Meridian. Eliminates wind-dampness, treats urinary incontinence, manages middle-jiao injury, and benefits the joints. Combined with *Danggui* (Angelica sinensis Radix), it treats post-illness foot swelling. Assisted by *Lurong* (Cervus nippon Cornu Corneum) and *Aiye* (Artemisia argyi Folium), it treats leukorrhea due to cold-dampness.
Burn off the hairs with fire, cut into pieces, soak in wine, steam, take out, and dry in the sun for use. Contraindicated for those with Kidney deficiency accompanied by fire. (Its nature is warm and drying.)
Also known as Hei Gouji (*Cyrtomium fortunei*).
*Yinchen* (Artemisia capillaris Herba) and *Chixiaodou* (Vigna angularis Semen) serve as its guiding herbs. It requires processing to counteract *Sanhuang* (Rhizoma Coptidis, Radix Scutellariae, Radix Gentianae) and mercury. It can subdue *Shizhongru* (Stalactitum). It can resolve the toxicity of the five metals.
Bitter, cold, slightly toxic. Enters the Foot-Jueyin (Liver) Meridian. Resolves pathogenic heat, stops epistaxis, eliminates blood strangury, drives out various toxins, kills three types of parasites, breaks up masses and accumulations, and treats metal wounds. For diseases caused by internal pathogens manifesting externally, it is often effective. Combined with *Sumu* (Pterocarpus santalinus Lignum), it treats cough with purulent blood. Combined with *Shengma* (Cimicifugae Rhizoma), *Gancao* (Glycyrrhizae Radix et Rhizoma), and *Chishao* (Paeoniae Radix Rubra), it promotes the eruption of smallpox/variolous eruptions. Combined with *Suosharen* (Amomi Fructus Rotundus) and *Gancao*, ground into coarse powder, wrapped in cotton, and sucked/swallowed for juice, it treats fish or chicken bones stuck in the throat. Charred, taken with child's urine and wine, it treats mastitis.
Placing it in a water vat, using this water for cooking and drinking, prevents people from being infected by epidemic qi.
*Fupenzi* (Rubiae Fructus) serves as its guiding herb. It is incompatible with *Leiwann* (Polyporus umbellatus), *Danshen* (Salvia miltiorrhiza Radix et Rhizoma), and *Chaosheng*.
Acrid, sweet, warm. Enters the Blood level of the Foot-Shaoyin (Kidney) Meridian. Assists Yang to raise Yin. Treats all types of wind-damp edema, cold pain in the lower abdomen radiating to the genitals, nocturnal emission during dream sleep.
When combined with pure Yin medicines, it achieves the function of "Water and Fire having reached each other" (Ji Ji). As the sovereign herb combined with *Dahuang* (Rhei Radix et Rhizoma), it treats alcoholic gout. Soak in boiling water to remove the heart. To assist Yang, soak and steam with decoction of *Qizi* (Lycii Fructus). To dispel wind-damp, stir-fry with good wine. To secure essence, stir-fry with juice of *Jinyingzi* (Rosa laevigata Fructus). To regulate Kidney Qi, boil together with *Juhua* (Chrysanthemi Flos). Contraindicated for four conditions: fire hyperactivity causing essence leakage, deficiency of Yin water, difficult urination, and dry mouth and tongue. *Bajitian* (Morinda officinalis Radix) and *Suoyang* (Cynomorii Herba) warm the cold of the Kidney Meridian. *Shudi* (Rehmanniae Radix Praeparata) and *Qizi* control the heat of the Kidneys. Kidney deficiency often involves heat, while Kidney Meridian deficiency often involves cold; meridians and zang-organs differ, and water and fire must be distinguished clearly; do not misuse.
