Baiqian (Cynanchum Stauntonii Rhizoma), also known as Souyao.
Contraindicated with pork, mutton, Chinese cabbage (Songcai), and malt sugar.
Pungent, sweet, slightly cold. Enters the Qi level of the Hand-Taiyin Lung Meridian. It directs rebellious Qi downward in the chest and hypochondrium, treating cough with Qi rebellion, and wheezing with a sound like a water hen in the throat (indicating phlegm-Qi congestion).
Combined with Ziwan (Asteris Radix et Rhizoma), Banxia (Pinelliae Rhizoma Preparatum), and Daji (Euphorbiae Pekinensis Radix), it treats chronic cough with Qi rebellion (symptoms include body edema, shortness of breath, abdominal distension, inability to lie flat day or night, and a water-hen-like sound in the throat).
Combined with Jiegeng (Platycodonis Radix) and Sangbai pi (Mori Cortex), it treats chronic cough with hemoptysis.
Assisted by Cangzhu (Atractylodis Rhizoma), it treats edema caused by dampness.
Roasted, ground into powder, and taken with warm wine (2 qian), it treats chronic cough causing wheezing and insomnia.
Remove the root head and fibrous roots, soak overnight in water prepared with Sheng Gancao (Glycyrrhizae Radix et Rhizoma), then roast for use.
Those with a bitter taste are not authentic. Baiqian is characterized by being thick, long, stiff, straight, and easily broken, resembling Niuxi (Achyranthis Bidentatae Radix). Baixiao (Cynanchi Atrati Radix) is short, small, soft, flexible, and does not break when bent.
Contraindicated in cases of Qi deficiency and deficiency-type phlegm.
(Class 31: Fragrant Herbs continued)
Danggui (Angelicae Sinensis Radix) is inhibited by Changpu (Acori Tatarinowii Rhizoma), Shengjiang (Zingiberis Rhizoma Recens), Haizao (Sargassum), and Mumeng. It is antagonistic to Rucao (likely referring to specific noxious herbs) and wet dough. It can be processed with Xionghuang (Realgar).
Sweet, pungent, warm. Enters the Blood level of the Hand-Shaoyin Heart Meridian, Foot-Jueyin Liver Meridian, and Foot-Taiyin Spleen Meridian. It is a Qi-moving herb within the Blood. It promotes blood circulation and harmonizes blood, nourishes Ying (Nutritive) Qi and regulates Qi, dispels wind, and scatters cold.
It treats malaria, dysentery, smallpox/rash, carbuncles, sores, ulcers, and alleviates headache, heart/abdominal pain, lower back/spine pain, limb/joint pain, and bone/tendon pain (all due to its blood-invigorating effects).
Combined with Fuling (Poria), it descends Qi.
Combined with Baishao (Paeoniae Radix Alba), it nourishes Ying.
Combined with Renshen (Ginseng Radix et Rhizoma) and Huangqi (Astragali Radix), it tonifies Yang within Yin.
Combined with Honghua (Carthami Flos), it treats retrograde menstruation (bleeding from mouth/nose; stop bleeding first by taking juice ground from high-quality Beijing ink).
As the sovereign herb combined with Huangqi, it treats fever due to Blood deficiency (symptoms resemble Baihu Tang syndrome, but the pulse is not long and full; misusing Baihu Tang will cause death).
Assisted by Jingjie (Schizonepetae Spica), it treats postpartum wind-stroke.
Assisted by Chaihu (Bupleuri Radix) and Gegen (Puerariae Lobatae Radix), it disperses exterior pathogens.
Added to Xiebai San, it resolves phlegm.
Added to Shixiao San, it breaks blood stasis.
Combined with Guizhi (Cinnamomi Ramulus), Fuzi (Aconiti Lateralis Radix Praeparata), and Wuzhuyu (Evodiae Fructus), it drives out deep-seated cold.
Combined with Dahuang (Rhei Radix et Rhizoma) and Mangxiao (Natri Sulfas), it breaks heat accumulation.
The head stops bleeding (action moves upward); the tail breaks blood stasis (action moves downward); the body harmonizes blood (use after washing with wine). For hemoptysis, stir-fry with vinegar. For Spleen deficiency, stir-fry with rice bran or soil. For treating phlegm, stir-fry with ginger juice. For stopping bleeding and invigorating blood, stir-fry with child's urine. To prevent Qi dispersion, stir-fry with Shaoyao juice.
Contraindicated in six conditions: loose stools/diarrhea, spontaneous sweating (due to pungency dispersing Qi), Lung deficiency (pungency enters Lung, dispersing Lung Qi), excessive Liver Fire (Danggui is warm), recent cessation of hemoptysis (Danggui moves blood), and Spleen deficiency with poor appetite (fear of dispersing Qi and moistening intestines).
"Danggui" implies that blood should return to the meridians. It prevents excess blood from overflowing externally. If used in Blood deficiency, it will further deplete deficiency.
Only when assisted by Sheng Dihuang (Rehmanniae Radix) and Baishao (Paeoniae Radix Alba) does it possess some blood-invigorating properties.
