[Baijiezi / White Mustard Seed]
Pungent, warm. Enters the Qi level of the Hand-Taiyin Lung Meridian. It unblocks meridians and collaterals, dissipates fluid retention, eliminates malaria-related masses (Pi), and treats asthma and coughing. When phlegm is located in the hypochondrium or outside the skin and muscles within the membranes, this herb alone can reach the site. Stir-fried and ground into powder, made into pills with steamed wheat cake dough, it treats cold qi in the abdomen. Raw, ground and mixed with water for application to the sole of the foot, it guides toxicity downward, preventing chickenpox/rubella toxins from entering the eyes. Contraindicated in cases of Lung Qi deficiency and heat in the Stomach.
[Luobo / Radish Root]
Also known as Laifu root.
Pungent, sweet, cold. Enters the Hand-Taiyin Spleen/Lung, Hand-Foot-Yangming Large Intestine/Stomach, and Hand-Foot-Shaoyang Sanjiao/Gallbladder meridians. It dispels pathogenic heat, expands the chest and diaphragm, counteracts toxicity from wine and wheat products, and resolves accumulation from tofu. Treats throat obstruction (Houbi), mouth ulcers, lateral and frontal headaches, lung atrophy with loss of voice, coughing with hematemesis or epistaxis, phlegm masses and food stagnation, anorexic dysentery (Jinkou Li), rectal prolapse, turbid dysuria, scalds and burns, and traumatic injuries.
Crush to obtain natural juice, or mix with ginger juice or white honey for oral administration. Or crush raw for external application. Contraindicated in cases of sinking Qi and blood deficiency. Contraindicated when taking tonifying herbs such as Polygonum multiflorum (Heshouwu) and Rehmannia (Dihuang).
[Luobozǐ / Radish Seed]
Pungent, sweet, neutral. Raw promotes ascending and dispersing; cooked promotes descending and purging. Ascending action induces vomiting of phlegm-saliva, disperses wind-cold, and erupts sores/rashes. Descending action transforms food, removes distension, directs Qi downward, and resolves phlegm. (It has the power to push down walls and overturn battlements.) It benefits urination and defecation, and removes Qi pain. Combined with Gleditsia sinensis seed (Yazao) and decocted, it treats stroke-induced lockjaw. Combined with Apricot Kernel (Xingren), it treats chronic cough. Mixed with water, ground raw, and juice taken orally, it induces vomiting of wind-phlegm. Mixed with vinegar and ground, applied externally for swollen toxic sores.
Contraindicated in weak individuals. Contraindicated when taking tonifying medicines.
[Jiangsheng / Fresh Ginger]
Ziziphus jujuba bark (Zipi) acts as its guide. It is incompatible with Scutellaria baicalensis (Huangqin), Coptis chinensis (Huanglian), and Trogopterus dung (Tianshuan). It neutralizes the toxicity of Pinellia ternata (Banxia), Arisaema erubescens (Nanxing), and Datura metel (Bangdang).
Pungent, warm. Enters the Qi level of the Hand-Taiyin Lung and Foot-Yangming Stomach meridians. It dispels cold and releases the exterior, relieves depression and regulates the Middle Jiao. It opens cold-phlegm, stops vomiting and hiccups, (Ginger is the holy medicine for vomiting), removes foulness, and clarifies the mind. Combined with Ziziphus bark, it drains damp-heat from the muscle layer. Combined with Jujube, it harmonizes Ying and Wei. Assisted by Apricot Kernel, it descends cold Qi in the chest and diaphragm. Assisted by Pinellia, it treats epigastric fullness (Xin Pi), vomiting, and hiccups. Combined with Pear Juice and Bamboo Sap, it disperses nodules horizontally. Combined with pre-rain tea, it treats dysentery. Added to Erchen Tang or Sijunzi Tang, it stops vomiting and watery diarrhea. Combined with Scallion White, it releases exterior pathogens. Crushed juice combined with child's urine treats sudden attacks of "Five Zhong" (Stroke, Qi strike, Heat stroke, Poisoning, Evil invasion) and dry Huoluan.
Fresh Ginger, Scallion Head, and Radish Seed are ground together, stir-fried until hot, wrapped in silk, and applied to the chest distension area. Two bags are used, rotating them when one cools down, to treat deficiency-type Jie Xiong syndrome, resulting in cure through sweating.
Raw use: disperses. Cooked use: harmonizes the Middle. Crushed juice: opens orifices, breaks obstructions, resolves phlegm. For sudden emergencies and edema, use the peel. To stop vomiting and diarrhea, use baked ginger. For blood disorders, use charred ginger. Excessive consumption causes alternating chills and fever.
Strange Syndrome: Unstoppable bleeding from hair follicles, abdominal swelling like a drum, followed by rapid closure of eyes, nose, and mouth due to Qi distension, named Mai Yi. Drink two cups each of Fresh Ginger Juice and water immediately for self-healing. If not healed, take again. Another case: During childbirth, excessive effort injures the fetal membrane, causing a meat strand several feet long to protrude, causing extreme pain. First administer Shixiao San. Take three jin of fresh ginger, crush it, mix with two jin of sesame oil, stir-fry until the oil is exhausted. Use five chi of cooked silk folded into layers to gently lift the strand, coil it up, insert it into the urinary/vaginal canal, then wrap the ginger in a silk bag and bind it below the meat strand to fumigate. When the ginger cools, heat it with an iron to maintain the ginger vapor. If the effect fades, repeat the heating process. Within four to five days, the strand will retract. If the meat strand breaks, it is incurable.
[Ganjiang / Dried Ginger]
Pungent, warm. Enters the Qi level of the Hand-Taiyin Lung Meridian. Treats cough and warms the Middle. Treats distension, Huoluan, abdominal pain, cold dysentery, and blood stasis. Suitable for patients who are deficient and cold.
