[Baicaoshuang (Soot from Cooking Stove)]
Pungent, warm. Eliminates accumulation and stops bleeding. Applied externally to treat various sores of the mouth and tongue; reduces carbuncles and swellings caused by smallpox and measles. Combined with Zongtan (Charred Palm Fiber), it treats threatened abortion with vaginal bleeding. Paired with Chuanlian (Coptidis Rhizoma), it treats dysentery complicated with heat.
(The following introduces seven types of Lead preparations)
[Qianbaishuang (Lead Subcarbonate)]
When combined with Yuganzi (Phyllanthus emblica) and Lvma zhi (Fat of Donkey or Horse), its texture becomes soft. It is incompatible with Shuiyin (Mercurii Bichloridum), Feicuishi (Chrysoprasis), and dislikes Xi (Tin).
Pungent, neutral. Toxic. Clears heat and expels pathogenic factors; calms the Heart and Liver; stabilizes the Hun and Po. Stops palpitations and fright; treats wind-phlegm convulsions. Antidotes for Qingfen (Calomel) poisoning. Lead subcarbonate refined a hundred times is non-toxic and suitable for medicinal use, but the dosage must not exceed one fen. Improper use damages muscles and bones; thus, it should not be used in large amounts. Raw lead is toxic and can be fatal; poisoning can be antidoted with Zhegu rou (Meat of Francolin).
It is incompatible with Shitingzhi (Stibnite), Pishi (Arsenic Trioxide), Cishi (Magnetitum), Heye (Nelumbinis Folium), Xunhui (Ash of Mushroom), Lingyangjiao (Saiga Tataricae Cornu), Oubuguzhe (Sepiae Endoconcha), Huanglian (Coptidis Rhizoma), Gancao (Glycyrrhizae Radix et Rhizoma), Feilian (Cardui Thistle), Shuwei (Artemisia argyi caulis), Guijia (Testudinis Carapax et Plastrum), Shengjiang (Zingiberis Rhizoma), Dihuang (Rehmanniae Radix), Yangzhi (Sheep Fat), Zisuzi (Perillae Fructus). It dislikes Xi (Tin), Mumingdugong (Unknown toxin), and Yangxue (Sheep Blood).
[Mituoseng (Litharge)]
Pungent, cold. Non-toxic. Calms the mind, stops palpitations, clears intense fever, and expels various pathogens. When decocted with Congbai (Scallion Stem), Ejiao (Donkey-hide Gelatin), and Nuomi (Glutinous Rice), it treats uterine heat causing chest oppression and fullness. When combined with Zhugen (Bletilla Rhizoma) and decocted with wine and water, it treats threatened abortion due to fetal restlessness.
In usage, only the decoction liquid should be taken to utilize its qi and the power of the raw material; do not ingest the dregs, as they may consume body fat.
[Huangdan (Red Lead)]
Also known as Suilian (Medullary Lead).
Pungent, neutral. Disperses blood stasis and relieves pain. Heals tendons and reconnects bones.
Calcined over fire, quenched seven times in vinegar, ground into powder, and processed using Glycyrrhiza water (floating method to remove impurities).
[Tongqing (Verdigris)]
Also known as Tonglv (Copper Acetate).
Acid, astringent, neutral. Slightly toxic. Enters the Foot Jueyin Liver Meridian and Foot Shaoyang Gallbladder Meridian. Induces vomiting to expel wind-phlegm; treats malignant sores, gan sores (childhood malnutrition ulcers), traumatic wounds, blepharitis with ulceration, and excessive tearing. Stops bleeding and kills parasites. When rubbed with Huashi (Talcum) and Xingren (Prunus Armeniaca Semen), it treats gangrenous stomatitis (Zouma Gan). When paired with Kufan (Alumen Exsiccatum), it treats sores of the mouth and nose.
[Heixi (Black Tin)]
Also refers to the lead component in Black Tin Pill.
Dislikes Zi Bei Tiankui (Ophiopogon japonicus var. purpureus).
Sweet, cold. Inherits the qi of Northern Gui Water; it is the essence of extreme Yin. Its substance is heavy and solid, its nature is moist and slippery, its color is black, and it internally connects to the Kidney. It treats all Yin disorders and has the function of restoring Yin to normality. However, its nature carries Yin toxicity; it should not be taken in excess, lest it damage the Heart and Stomach. Using approximately two liang of lead, decocted in water, mixed with Sugarcane juice and Pear juice, it eliminates toxins and calms mania. Formed into pills with steamed dough, it treats regurgitation and hiccups. (Preparation: Melt lead, hammer and grind into powder with willow wood. Take one liang of powder, add one sheng of rice vinegar, boil in a clay pot until a paste forms. Mix with a small amount of this lead paste into old wheat flour dough, steam until cooked, pound into consistency, and form pills the size of mung beans. Take one pill per dose with mild ginger soup.) Used for counterflow of Yin-fire and deficiency of True Yang...
