(Shi Liu Huang / Pyrite) is guided by Qing Dai (Indigo Naturalis) and Shi Ting Zhi (Pyrolusite). It is incompatible with Xi Xin (Asari Radix), Pu Xiao (Natrii Sulfas), Iron, Vinegar, Hei Xi (Stibnite), Pork, Duck Juice, Yu Gan Zi (Phyllanthus emblica), Sang Hui (Ash of Mulberry Branches), Yi Mu Cao (Leonurus japonicus), Da Yan (Sodium Chloride), Che Qian Zi (Plantago Seed), Huang Bo (Phellodendri Cortex), Shi Wei (Pyrrosiae Folium), Qiao Mai (Fagopyrum esculentum), Du Zhou (Artemisia argyi), Di Gu Pi (Lycii Cortex), Di Yu (Sanguisorbae Radix), She Chuang Zi (Cnidii Fructus), Bi Ma (Ricini Semen), Tu Si Zi (Cuscutae Semen), Can Sha (Bombyx Batryticatus), Zi He (Placenta Human), Bo Cai (Spinacia oleracea), Sang Bai Pi (Mori Cortex), Ma Bian Cao (Verbena officinalis). Avoid consuming blood from poultry and beasts.
Acidic in taste, toxic. Extremely hot in nature, purely Yang, enters the Foot-Shaoyin Kidney Meridian. Removes cold accumulation, stops water swelling, kills internal parasites, dispels cold pathogens. Combined with Ban Xia (Pinelliae Rhizoma), it treats chronic asthma for many years. Combined with Ai Ye (Artemisiae Argyi Folium), it treats Yin-Du Shang Han (Cold damage due to Yin pathogen). Mixed with sesame oil fried with chicken eggs and applied topically, it treats scabies. Combined with Ku Fan (Alumen Exsiccata), it treats acute diarrhea due to Qi deficiency. Mixed with Xiong Huang (Realgar) into powder, wrapped in cotton, and inserted into the ear, it treats sudden deafness and blockage. Combined with Hua Shi (Talcum), it treats vomiting and diarrhea caused by heatstroke. Burning it to produce smoke for inhalation immediately stops coughing, counterflow qi, and hiccups. Ground into fine powder and sprinkled on sores, it causes flesh growing like snake worms to fall off.
Those that are yellow, crystal clear, and pure are of good quality. Preparation method: Hollow out a radish, insert sulfur, secure it, and roast over rice husk fire until cooked. Then boil with juice of Zi Bei Fu Ping (Spirodela polyrrhiza) and Qing Hao (Artemisiae Annuae Herba) until the liquid is exhausted. Subsequently boil with Bai Bu (Stemonae Radix), Liu Zhi (Salix Twig), and flowing eastward water. Finally, wash with Zao Jia Shui (Gleditsiae Sinensis Water) to remove black sludge before use, or boil until soft in pig large intestine before use. Contraindicated for those with Yin deficiency.
In human life, Yang is often in excess, while Yin is often insufficient. I often see patients with deficient heat taking Yin-nourishing formulas for half a year to a year without immediate effect, leading them to believe that nourishing Yin is useless, and preferring to tonify Yang to generate Yin. Some claim that in cases of weakness, there must be parasites eating the marrow; only Liu Huang (Sulfur) can tonify the Ming Men (Gate of Life) downwards and kill parasites, so they take a small dose daily hoping for quick results. Little do they know that this causes Yang fire to increase daily and Yin fluid to dry up further, hastening death without realizing the cause. Moreover, if it were truly a deficiency-cold pattern, one should tonify Qi to restore Yang. Why use such a harsh and fierce drug, which ends up poisoning the patient to death?
(Bai Fan / Alum) is guided by Gan Cao (Glycyrrhizae Radix et Rhizoma). It is incompatible with Ma Huang (Ephedrae Herba) and Hong Xin Hui (Red-hearted Ash). It dislikes Mu Li (Ostreae Concha).
Acidic, salty, and astringent in taste. Enters the Liver and Lung meridians. Dries dampness and resolves toxicity, kills parasites and descends turbidity, draws out phlegm and transforms fluids, dispels wind and clears heat, stops bleeding and alleviates pain, cauterizes foul flesh, promotes healthy tissue growth, and removes stubborn heat from the bone marrow. Treats convulsions, epilepsy, throat obstruction, wind-eye conditions, toothache, nasal polyps, rectal prolapse, leukorrhea, uterine prolapse, genital erosion, carbuncles, malignant sores, scrofula, tinea, and bites from tigers, dogs, snakes, and insects. Combined with Rou Gui (Cinnamomi Cortex), it treats swollen and stiff tongue (Mu She). Combined with Zao Jiao Mo (Gleditsiae Sinensis Powder), it induces vomiting to expel phlegm in stroke coma. Combined with Gan Cao (Glycyrrhizae Radix et Rhizoma) and ground with water, it washes red and swollen eyes. Combined with Zhu Sha (Cinnabaris), it applies to infant thrush (E Kou). Combined with Tong Lv (Chalcanthitum), soaked in water, it washes angular blepharitis. Combined with Bi Ma Ren (Ricini Semen), Yan Mei Rou (Salted Plum Flesh), and She Xiang (Moschus), pounded into pills wrapped in brocade, inserted into the nose for polyps. Combined with 5 qian of Xi Cha Ye (Fine Tea Leaves) and 1 liang of Sheng Bai Fan (Raw Alum), made into pills the size of wu zi (Chinese mustard seeds) with honey, it treats wind-phlegm epilepsy. (For one-year-old infants, administer ten pills.)
Combined with Huang Dan (Minium), apply to mouth and tongue ulcers. Combined with high-quality Huang La (Beeswax), melted into pills, it treats internal attack of toxic vapors, protects mucous membranes, stops diarrhea, and promotes pus discharge from deep tissues. Combined with salt, apply to tight jaw lock and point at hanging abscesses. Combined with Mu Li Fen (Ostreae Concha Powder), taken with wine, it treats enuresis in men and women. Combined with Huang La (Beeswax) and Chen Ju Pi (Citri Reticulatae Pericarpium), it treats jaundice in women. (If caused by irregular menstruation or sexual activity, administer with Tiao Jing Tang [Regulate Menses Decoction].) Crushed Sheng Bai Fan (Raw Alum) blown into obstructed throat swelling. Dip in Shi Liu Pi (Punica Granatum Pericarpium) to rub tinea corporis.
Raw form resolves toxicity; calcined form promotes tissue regeneration. Over-calcination produces Ku Fan (Alumen Exsiccata). Excessive consumption damages the heart and lungs and injures bones.
Strange Syndrome: Sores appear all over the body, resembling snake heads. This is due to heat-toxin stagnating internally and cold-qi wrapping externally. After a long time, it emerges through skin and flesh, hence the external appearance.
Taking La Fan Wan (Wax-Alum Pill) will lead to spontaneous recovery.
