Cinnabar (Zhusha), also known as Zhu Sha.
It is incompatible with saline water, Plantaginis Seed (Cheqiancao), Pyrosulae Herba (Shiwei), Gleditsiae Fructus (Zaojiao), Cassiae Semen (Jueming), Dianthi Herba (Qumai), Acori Tatarinowii Rhizoma (Tian Nan Xing), Aconiti Lateralis Radix (Wutou), Sanguisorbae Radix (Diyu), Mori Fructus (Sangshen), Placentae Humana (Zi Heche), Houttuyniae Herba (Diding), Callicarpae Ramulus (Mabiancao), Lycii Cortex (Digupi), Osmunda Japonica (Yindi Jue), and Fuzi (Baifuzi). It is antagonistic to Magnetitum (Cishi). It is contraindicated with various blood products. It is sweet in taste and slightly cold in nature. It enters the Blood aspect of the Hand-Shaoyin Heart Meridian. It can subdue floating fire and reduce heat in the Heart and Lung. It calms the Spirit (Shen) and relieves irritability and fullness, which demonstrates its fire-descending efficacy. It expels evil influences and expels dead fetus, demonstrating its heavy-settling power. It removes corneal opacity and treats sores and toxins. (The Heart is a Fire organ and cannot tolerate acrid-hot substances; thus, this herb is suitable for treating it.) Administer 5 fen mixed with honey water. It can preemptively resolve toxin from smallpox/variolous eruptions. (Severe cases become mild; abundant cases become scarce.) Combined with Tian Nan Xing and Hu Zhang, it eliminates wind-phlegm. Combined with calcined alum powder, it treats heart pain. Combined with Concha Tridacnae (Ge Fen), it treats hematemesis. Combined with Angelicae Sinensis Radix (Danggui) and Salviae Miltiorrhizae Radix (Danshen), it nourishes Heart Blood. Assisted by Ziziphi Spinosae Semen (Zaoren) and Ossis Fragments Longgu (Longgu), it nourishes Heart Qi. (Suppresses Yin fire to nourish Yuan Qi.) Combined with Ginseng Radix (Renshen) and Poria (Fuling), it treats Li Hun disease. (Li Hun disease refers to hallucinations where the body appears as two persons walking and lying together, unable to distinguish reality from illusion.) Taken with egg white, 1 qian, it treats fetal unrest in pregnant women. (If the fetus is dead, it is expelled; if alive, it is secured.) Added to Liu Yi San, it treats latent summer-heat qi. Added to Tuo Guo San, it treats toxic vapors attacking the Heart. Used with Rehmanniae Radix Recens (Shengdi) and Lycii Fructus (Gouqi), it nourishes Kidney Yin. Steamed and eaten with Pig Heart (Zhuxin), it treats seminal emission and turbid urine. Ground into powder for external application, it treats prolapsed tongue after childbirth. (Startle the patient by secretly throwing pots and pans to simulate falling sounds, and the tongue will retract spontaneously.) Boiled with Zi Bei Tian Kui and Glycyrrhizae Radix et Rhizoma Praeparata (Fen Gancao), ground into fine powder, and processed by water flotation (Shui Fei). Alternatively, boiled with juice from ash of Buckwheat Stem (Qiaomai Geng), ground into fine powder, and processed by water flotation. If refined by fire, it becomes toxic and lethal.
Mercury (Hong), also known as Shuiyin.
It is incompatible with Magnetitum (Cishi), Realgar (Pishi), Lead (Qian), Sulfur (Huang), Jujubae Fructus (Dazao), Sichuan Pepper (Shujiao), Placentae Humana (Ziheche), Pine Resin (Songzhi), Pine Needle (Songye), Nelumbinis Folium (Heye), Eriocauli Flos (Gu Jingcao), Venus Star Grass (Jinxingcao), Daylily (Xuancao), Prunellae Spica (Xiakucao), Datura Seed (Bangdangzi), Amaranthus (Yanlai Hong), Peucedani Radix (Matixiang), Solomonia Root (Dujiolian), Sagittaria Sagittifolia (Shuicigu), Leucodendron (Wasong), and Honeysuckle Vine (Rendong). It is acrid in taste and cold in nature. It is toxic. It resolves toxicity of the five metals, kills parasites causing sores and scabies, induces abortion, and sterilizes. Boiled with natural juice of Zi Bei Tian Kui and Polygoni Multiflori Caulis (Ye Jiao Teng) to remove its toxicity. It coagulates when combined with lead; it binds when combined with sulfur; it crumbles when ground with human saliva and jujube flesh; mercury scattered on the ground can be collected using Sichuan pepper and tea leaves. It is strictly contraindicated for head sores. (Fear that it may enter the meridians, causing tendon and bone spasms, which would be incurable by all medicines.)
