[Rou Dou Kou (Nutmeg)]
Also known as Rou Guo.
Pungent, warm. Enters the Hand-Yangming Large Intestine Meridian and Foot-Yangming Stomach Meridian. Regulates the Spleen and warms the Stomach, warms the Middle Jiao and directs Qi downward. Resolves phlegm-fluids, eliminates retained food, resolves alcohol toxicity, and dispels evil qi. Treats accumulation of cold in the viscera, removes abdominal distension and pain, astringes the Large Intestine to stop diarrhea, dysentery, and incontinence, and treats infant vomiting and diarrhea due to Stomach cold. Combined with Mu Xiang (Aucklandiae Radix), it directs Qi downward and reduces distension. (When the Spleen's transportation function is robust, Qi naturally descends.) Combined with Bu Gu Zhi (Psoraleae Fructus), it facilitates the transformation of Wu Earth and Gui Water into Fire, thereby transporting grain Qi. Avoid contact with copper and iron vessels. Wrap in glutinous rice flour or dough and roast until cooked, remove oil completely before use. Contraindicated in early-stage dysentery and sudden violent watery diarrhea due to fire.
Rou Dou Kou supplements the Fire within Spleen Earth, controls the dampness of Earth, and also moistens the dryness of Earth. The Spleen is inherently damp; when deficient, it manifests as dryness. However, this dryness has two types: one is like the dryness caused by scorching summer fire, and the other is like the dryness caused by autumnal coolness and clarity. For dryness caused by excessive fire, water should be used to moisten, such as Sheng Di Huang (Rehmanniae Radix) and Shu Di Huang (Prepared Rehmanniae Radix), Mai Dong (Ophiopogonis Radix). For dryness caused by cold and clarity, heat should be borrowed to steam and moisten, such as Rou Dou Kou and Fu Zi (Aconiti Lateralis Radix Praeparata). Whether using cold or hot remedies, treatment must not be mixed indiscriminately.
[Bu Gu Zhi (Psoraleae Fructus)]
Also known as Po Gu Zhi.
Works well with Hu Tao (Walnut) and Hu Ma (Sesame). Adverse reaction with Gan Cao (Glycyrrhizae Radix et Rhizoma). Contraindicated with various meats and Yun Tai (Brassica rapa var. oleifera). Pungent, bitter, very warm. Enters the Mingmen (Gate of Life) and Hand-Jueyin Pericardium Meridians. Warms the Kidneys to strengthen Yuan Yang, supplements Xiang Fire to unblock Jun Fire.
Treats Kidney cold causing spermatorrhea, turbid leukorrhea, enuresis, abdominal cold with loose stools, soreness and pain in the waist and knees, cold genitals and damp scrotum. Made into pills with Rou Dou Kou and Da Zao (Jujubae Fructus) to treat deficiency-cold diarrhea of the Spleen and Kidney. (Mu Xiang may be added.) Combined with Shan Zhi (Gardeniae Fructus) and Fu Shen (Poria with Hostwood), it treats upper heat and lower cold. Paired with Hui Xiang (Foeniculi Fructus) and Rou Gui (Cinnamomi Cortex), it treats lumbar pain due to blood stasis. Paired with Hu Tao and Du Zhong (Eucommiae Cortex), it treats lumbar pain due to wind-cold.
To warm the Upper Jiao, stir-fry with wine. To warm the Kidneys, stir-fry with salt water. If concerned about its dry nature, steam with milk, or steam with Hu Ma and Hu Tao. If concerned about its heat entering the Heart, soak in child's urine before steaming. Contraindicated in Yin deficiency with sinking, internal heat with irritability and thirst, dizziness with Qi deficiency, pregnancy (due to its warm-drying nature and descending Qi), Pericardium heat, and constipation of both bowels.
Strange Syndrome: The penis does not flaccidify, spermatorrhea continues without stopping, feeling like needle pricks at times, pain upon pinching, named "Kidney Leak." Combine Jiu Cai Zi (Allii Tuberosi Semen) in equal amounts (one liang each), take three qian per dose, decoct in water, take three times daily until cured. When Qi fails to return to the Kidneys, use Po Gu Zhi to anchor it. However, one must realize that the floating up of Qi is due to insufficiency of Essence and Water. When Water is deficient, Fire arises. Po Gu Zhi supplements the Fire of Mingmen, which is adding fire to fire, causing True Water to become further depleted and Deficient Fire to become more blazing. Excess Fire generates Qi, causing this Qi to float upward even more instead of descending. Moreover, this agitates the Fire of the Bao Luo (Pericardium Collaterals); with blazing Jun and Xiang Fires, irritability and restlessness ensue, and such conditions are invariably critical. It is better to heavily prescribe Shu Di Huang (Prepared Rehmanniae Radix), assist with Fu Ling (Poria), Ci Shi (Magnetitum), and add Sha Ren (Amomi Fructus) as a guiding herb. In this way, Qi will naturally return to its origin, making it a stable and appropriate prescription.
